Evaluation of additive for reducing gaseous emissions from swine waste CIGR Journal
Sanjay B. Shah; NC State University; Praveen Kolar; Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695, USA.
Additives can reduce gaseous emissions from swine waste lagoons and pits.  We have demonstrated for the first time that an additive has the potential to reduce methane emission from an anaerobic swine lagoon.  ManureMax®, a humate product was evaluated for its ability to reduce gas and odor emissions from swine anaerobic lagoon and barn flush-water.  Four treatments, Control (no additive), Low (label dosage), Medium (50% higher than label dosage), and High (200% higher than label dosage) were applied to inclined pipes installed in a swine lagoon.  While the Medium and High treatments were not effective, the Low treatment reduced methane, 2-butanone, and tetrahydrofuran concentrations by 34%, 44%, and 57%, respectively vs. the Control in the pipe headspace....

Evaluation of a constructed wetland for removal of some physicochemical and microbiological contaminants from wastewater in a residential tertiary institution in Nigeria CIGR Journal
Felix A. Oginni; Solomon A. Isiorho.
Covenant University is a residential tertiary institution in Canaan land, a large faith based facility, whose population can be more than 75,000 during Sundays religious activities in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria.  Sewage from this community is treated by a series of constructed wetland located in the University, with its effluent discharging into a canal that empties into River Iju.  This river is used by several hundreds of thousands of people downstream.  The effluent flows through six sets of constructed wetlands, each with four chambers and the treatment process in the wetlands was evaluated by its adequacy and efficiency.  Input and output of the system were monitored.  Results indicated that the series of wetland reduced the total dissolved solids...
