Wastelands Afforestation in Northern India by Cooperatives: A Socio-Economic Evaluation AgEcon
Kareemulla, Kalakada; Samra, J.S.; Rizvi, R.H.; Munnaram.
India has an estimated area of 129 million ha of wasteland, which can be used for providing sustainable livelihood for millions of rural unemployed. An evaluation of enhancing income and employment generation and environmental externalities due to plantations on wastelands through cooperatives and self-help groups was done. The development process was set up in leased degraded lands in three north Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The capacity building processes like savings and micro-enterprise skills empowered resource-poor farmers. An internal rate of return of 11.5 to 17.0 % in the phase I of the project imply tangible economic benefits at the end of 17 years, which improved to 13.9 to 20.4 % by including environmental...

Information and Wildlife Valuation: Experiments and Policy AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo.
An experiment involving 204 residents of Brisbane, Australia is outlined and the results are reported and analysed. Two consecutive surveys of the respondents provide data about their stated knowledge of 23 wildlife species present in tropical Australia, many of which exclusively occur there. In addition, these surveys provide data about the willingness of respondents to pay for the conservation of those species belonging to three taxa: reptiles, mammals, and birds. The respondents’ stated knowledge of the species is compared with their willingness to pay for species’ conservation, and relevant inferences are drawn. When the respondents’ knowledge of the species is experimentally increased in a balanced way, it is found to result in more dispersion...

Relação entre geomorfologia fluvial e biodiversidade e sua aplicação no processo de avaliação ambiental BABT
Bizerril,Carlos Roberto S. Fontenelle.
The relationship between the physical environment and the biological diversification of fish communities was studied and the use of fluvial morphology as an indicative of priority areas for conservation was examined. As a case study the upper course of rio Macacu, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was selected. Biotic data were obtained during 4 year of samples, conduced in 13 sample units. Each environment explored were characterized for its area, order, extension, slope and number of tributaries. Two new indices (environmental diversity and environmental turnover ratio) were proposed. To asses the correlation between the physical and biotic matrixes the data were compared using the Mantel test. A strong correlation between the physical variables and...
