Abundance distribution of common and rare plant species of Brazilian savannas along a seasonality gradient Acta Botanica
Silva,Igor Aurélio; Cianciaruso,Marcus Vinicius; Batalha,Marco Antônio.
We examined the species abundance distribution (SAD) of plant communities in: (1) a wet grassland, waterlogged throughout most of the year; (2) a seasonal savanna, with an annual dry season; and (3) a hyperseasonal savanna, with alternating drought and waterlogging over the year. We searched for differences in the abundance distributions of all species, as well as of the common and rare species. We tested whether the SADs fitted the lognormal, log-series, power fraction, and random assortment models. We found that environmental constraints may reduce the evenness of plant communities and change the SADs in savannas. We observed a lognormal abundance distribution in the wet grassland and a random abundance distribution in the hyperseasonal cerrado. The SAD...

Positive relationship between soil fertility, plant diversity, and gall richness Biological Sciences
Melo Júnior, João Carlos Ferreira; Boeger, Maria Regina Torres; Isaias, Rosy Mary dos Santos; Arriola, Igor Abba; Lorenzi, Luciano; Mouga, Denise Monique Dubet da Silva; Vieira, Celso Voos.
The complexity of nutrient distribution patterns in soils is a determinant environmental component of the structure of plant communities. Numerous insect species that interact with plants are associated with these communities, and some of these interactions result in the formation of unusual structures called galls. In this study, we investigated the relationship of galls, soil fertility and plant communities in three vegetation types, herbaceous restinga (HR), shrub restinga (SR) and shrub-tree restinga (STR), in an area of restinga in southern Brazil. We identified 217 species belonging to 159 genera and 82 families. The plant diversity recorded in the STR was 42.8% higher than the diversity in the other vegetation types. Gall richness increased...

Ferns influence on the woody species seedling bank in semi-deciduous forest, Southern Brazil Biological Sciences
Carvalho, Eloisa de Souza; Pimenta, José Antonio; Bianchini, Edmilson.
Different species of plants can act as environmental filters affecting the composition, structure and spatial distribution of seeds and seedlings of forest species. This study aimed to examine whether the presence of the fern stratum acts as a biotic environmental filter on the woody species seedling bank in a semi-deciduous forest remnant (Atlantic biome), Southern Brazil. Two experiments were developed in areas with ferns (F) and ferns-free (NF): a) richness and abundance of woody seedling bank were determined in 10 plots (25 m2) in each area; b) seedlings abundance of Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg., Aspidosperma polyneuron Müll. Arg., Euterpe edulis Mart., Guarea kunthiana A. Juss. and Inga marginata Kunth were monitored for a year in three...
