Морфология жаберного аппарата двустворчатых моллюсков в связи с загрязнением донных осадков IBSS Repository
Копытов, Ю. П.; Тимофеев, В. А.; Самышев, Э. З..

Copper, zinc and lead isotope signatures of sediments from a mediterranean coastal bay impacted by naval activities and urban sources ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Briant, Nicolas; Knoery, Joel; Bruzac, Sandrine; Sireau, Teddy; Brach-papa, Christophe.
Toulon bay is severely impacted by metal contamination induced by past and recent naval activities. In this work, Cu, Zn and Pb isotope compositions and elemental concentrations of fifty-five surface sediments were determined in order to map the spatial distribution of anthropogenic and natural sources along this land-sea continuum. Two sub-systems of Toulon Bay, the Small and Large bays, showed well-marked patterns on metal contamination levels and isotope signatures for Cu and Pb. The Small bay had the highest metal concentrations, and displayed average Pb and Cu isotope compositions of 1.1664 ± 0.0043 (1s, expressed as 206Pb/207Pb ratios) and −0.17 ± 0.19‰ (1s, expressed as δ65CuNIST values), respectively. It contrasted with the Large bay, with moderate...

Determining sedimentary material sources in a Brazilian urban lake using Zn stable isotope compositions of bottom sediments: a preliminary study ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Boaventura, Geraldo; Mulholland, Daniel; Garnier, Jeremie; Machado, Wilson; Babinski, Marly; Dantas, Elton.
Zinc isotopes ratios provide qualitative and quantitative information about contributions from different Zn sources in the environment. Here we present the results of a preliminary study to identify the main sources controlling Zn isotope signatures of sediments from Lake Paranoá (Brazil), an urban water reservoir. The Zn isotope ratios were measured by MC-ICP-MS and expressed as δ66/64Zn notation relative to the JMC 3-0749-L solution. The studied sediments showed a narrow isotopic range (+0.00 to +0.13 ‰; n = 10) similar to that reported for intensely weathered soils worldwide (from -0.4 to +0.2‰). The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) also suggests low or negligible influence of Zn anthropogenic source. This research provides a baseline assessment of the Zn...

ROLE OF ENZYMES IN THE REMEDIATION OF POLLUTED ENVIRONMENTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Rao,M.A; Scelza,R; Scotti,R; Gianfreda,L.
Environmental pollution is growing more and more due to the indiscriminate and frequently deliberate release of hazardous, harmful substances. Research efforts have been devoted to develop new, low-cost, low-technology, eco-friendly treatments capable of reducing and even eliminating pollution in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and soil environments. Among biological agents, enzymes have a great potentiality to effectively transform and detoxify polluting substances because they have been recognized to be able to transform pollutants at a detectable rate and are potentially suitable to restore polluted environments. This brief review will examine some classes of pollutants and enzymes capable of transforming them effectively into innocuous products....

Written reports on the effects of mining activities on the natural environment in Idrija in the 19th Century Naturalis
Car, J.; Dizdarevic, T..
The environmental conditions in the Idrija Mercury Mine and its broader surroundings were strongly affected in the first half of the 19th century by two disastrous pit fires. The fire could only be extinguished by flooding of the pit. The consequences of such flooding was extensive poisoning with mercury vapours, not only among those miners who participated in the fire extinguishing effort and later in the rehabilitation of the pit, but also among the inhabitants of Idrija. During rehabilitation works, the highly polluted water was discharged directly into the Idrijca River, killing all the fish species thriving there. After 1835 the Mine gradually intensified its production. The dumping of increasingly larger quantities of smelting wastes directly into...

The objectives of this study were to verify the effectiveness in reducing polluting gas emissions of novel methods for covering dairy slurry by using various types of hydrophobic fertilizers and to evaluate the mechanisms for reducing gas emissions from this slurry before and after methane fermentation. SOIL PHOSPHORUS THRESHOLDS IN EVALUATING RISK OF ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSFER TO SURFACE WATERS IN SANTA CATARINA, BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Gatiboni,Luciano Colpo; Smyth,Thomas Jot; Schmitt,Djalma Eugenio; Cassol,Paulo Cezar; Oliveira,Clovisson Menotti Boeira de.
The State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, has agricultural and livestock activities, such as pig farming, that are responsible for adding large amounts of phosphorus (P) to soils. However, a method is required to evaluate the environmental risk of these high soil P levels. One possible method for evaluating the environmental risk of P fertilization, whether organic or mineral, is to establish threshold levels of soil available P, measured by Mehlich-1 extractions, below which there is not a high risk of P transfer from the soil to surface waters. However, the Mehlich-1 extractant is sensitive to soil clay content, and that factor should be considered when establishing such P-thresholds. The objective of this study was to determine P-thresholds using the...

Phytoremediation of chlorobenzenes in sewage sludge cultivated with Pennisetum purpureum at different times AGRIAMBI
Alvarenga,Anarelly C.; Sampaio,Regynaldo A.; Pinho,Gevany P.; Cardoso,Paulo H. S.; Sousa,Izabelle de P.; Barbosa,Mário H. C..
ABSTRACT One of the major limitations of sewage sludge agricultural use is the presence of chlorobenzenes (CBs), which are toxic to the environment. The use of techniques of sewage sludge phytoremediation can be an important alternative for the degradation of these substances in the waste. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Pennisetum purpureum cultivation time on the reduction of the concentrations of 1,4-CB and 1,3,5-CB in sewage sludge. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design. The treatments consisted of five periods of Poaceae cultivation in sewage sludge plots (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days) and a control (sludge plots not cultivated). At 150 days, the control, in the layer of 0-20 cm, showed...

Nonpoint source pollution by swine farming wastewater in bean crop AGRIAMBI
Doblinski,André F.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Silva,Vanderlei R. da; Nóbrega,Lúcia H. P.; Gomes,Simone D.; Dal Bosco,Tatiane C..
In order to verify the environmental impact of the application of swine farming wastewater in bean crop, an experiment was set up in the Experimental Farm of PUCPR - Toledo, PR, Brazil. Runoff and soil samples were collected at the end of the experiment. Four wastewater treatments were utilized during the experiment (50, 100, 150 and 200 m³ ha-1) and the without wastewater as the control. The results demonstrate that (i) the amounts of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen in runoff are exponential, (ii) that phosphorus has a seven-fold polluting potential compared to potassium and three-fold compared to nitrogen, and (iii) that the mobility of potassium in the soil profile is the largest, followed by those of nitrogen and phosphorus.
