Application of palm pressed fiber as a carrier for ethanol production by Candida shehatae TISTR5843 Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Riansa-ngawong,Wiboon; Suwansaard,Maneewan; Prasertsan,Poonsuk.
Palm pressed fiber (PPF) is a clean and renewable lignocellulosic material. The PPF and delignified PPF (DPPF) were used as a carrier for immobilization of Candida shehatae TISTR5843 in bioethanol production. PPF was pre-treated by milling to obtain small particles, whereas DPPF was the delignification of PPF using NaClO2. C. shehatae TISTR5843 was grown in modified yeast extract- malt (YM) medium at 30 ± 2ºC on an orbital shaker at 150 rpm for batch and repeated batch fermentation. In the batch system, immobilized cells on a small size, less than 0.5 mm, of DPPF (sDPPF) gave the maximum ethanol production of 11.5 g L-1 at 24 hrs cultivation period. The ethanol concentration and ethanol yield of sDPPF were 6.2% and 6.8% higher (ethanol production 11.5 g...

Fermentation of rice bran hydrolysate to ethanol using Zymomonas mobilis biofilm immobilization on DEAE-cellulose Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Todhanakasem,Tatsaporn; Narkmit,Tipong; Areerat,Kamonchanok; Thanonkeo,Pornthap.
Background The major challenges associated with the fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates are the reduction in the operating cost and minimizing the complexity of the process. Zymomonas mobilis biofilm has been emerged to resolve these complexities. Biofilm has been reported to tolerate to the toxic inhibitors and easily manipulated toward the cell recycle through the cell immobilization. Results Z. mobilis ZM4 and TISTR 551 were able to develop biofilms on DEAE cellulose under the differences in the morphologies. Z. mobilis ZM4 developed homogeneous biofilm that brought DEAE fiber to be crosslinking, while Z. mobilis TISTR 551 developed heterogeneous biofilm in which crosslinking was not observed. Ethanol production under batch and repeated batch...

Ethanol fermentation of sugar beet thick juice diluted with crude cheese whey by the flex yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus KD-15 OAK
Oda, Y; Nakamura, K; Shinomiya, N; Ohba, K; 小田, 有二.
Kluyveromyces marxianus KD-15, called flex yeast, is a strain that is insensitive to catabolite repression and has the capacity to produce ethanol efficiently from a mixture of beet molasses and whey powder. When a fermentation test was conducted in 50 mL of a medium containing 200 mg mL-1 of sugar as sugar beet thick juice diluted with an arbitrary amount of crude whey, strain KD-15 produced over 99 mg mL-1 ethanol in all the media tested, and ethanol formation decreased in proportion to the volume of whey by K. marxianus NBRC 1963, the parental strain of KD-15, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae NBRC 0224, the reference strain for conventional ethanol production. Fermentation of thick juice diluted with whey alone by strain KD-15 at 30 °C initially proceeded...

Efficient Production of Ethanol from Saccharified Crops Mixed with Cheese Whey by the Flex Yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus KD-15 OAK
NAKAMURA, Kenji; SHINOMIYA, Noriyuki; ORIKASA, Yoshitake; ODA, Yuji; 折笠, 善丈; 小田, 有二.
Ethanol production from a mixture of wheat flour or potato tubers and cheese whey was examined using the flex yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus KD-15, a 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant of strain NBRC 1963 that can produce ethanol from sugar beet thick juice diluted with whey. Strain KD-15 simultaneously converted glucose and lactose to ethanol within 48 h, in media containing 10.0% to 15.0% (w/v) total sugars from saccharified filtrate and whey. For efficient production of ethanol from 15.0% (w/v) total sugars, KD-15 cells were collected after fermentation and inoculated into fresh media. Batch fermentation was successfully repeated at least ten times in medium composed of saccharified potato tubers mixed with whey. Yeast cells began to convert all the sugars...

Impacts of Expanded Ethanol Production on Southern Agriculture AgEcon
Susanto, Dwi; Rosson, C. Parr, III; Hudson, Darren.
This study analyzes the potential impacts of expanded ethanol production on southern agriculture. Results of regression analysis suggest that acreage planted for field crops (corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat) is inelastic with respect to relative prices. The results provide statistical evidence of potential significant acreage shifts favoring corn over cotton, soybeans, and wheat. Simulations indicate that higher corn prices will increase corn acreage, but the South continues to be a deficit corn region. U.S. corn production is capable of supplying domestic demand for ethanol, feed for livestock and poultry, and other uses, while maintaining exports at more than 2 billion bushels annually.

Long-Term and Global Tradeoffs between Bio-Energy, Feed, and Food AgEcon
Tokgoz, Simla; Elobeid, Amani E.; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Yu, Tun-Hsiang (Edward); Dong, Fengxia; Hart, Chad E.; Beghin, John C..
Projections of U.S. ethanol production and its impacts on planted acreage, crop prices, livestock production and prices, trade, and retail food costs are presented under the assumption that current tax credits and trade policies are maintained. The projections were made using a multi-product, multi-country deterministic partial equilibrium model. The impacts of higher oil prices, a drought combined with an ethanol mandate, and removal of land from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) relative to baseline projections are also presented. The results indicate that expanded U.S. ethanol production will cause long-run crop prices to increase. In response to higher feed costs, livestock farmgate prices will increase enough to cover the feed cost increases....

Ethanol Plant Location Determinants and County Comparative Advantage AgEcon
Lambert, Dayton M.; Wilcox, Michael D.; English, Alicia; Stewart, Lance A..
The location of ethanol plants is determined by infrastructure, product and input markets, fiscal attributes of local communities, and state and federal incentives. This empirical analysis uses probit regression along with spatial clustering methods to analyze investment activity of ethanol plants at the county level for the lower U.S. 48 states from 2000 to 2007. The availability of feedstock dominates the site selection decision. Other factors, such as access to navigable rivers or railroads, product markets, producer credit and excise tax exemptions, and methyl tertiary-butyl ether bans provided some counties with a comparative advantage in attracting ethanol plants.

Spittlebug infestation in sugarcane affects ethanolic fermentation Scientia Agricola
Ravaneli,Gisele Cristina; Madaleno,Leonardo Lucas; Presotti,Leandro Eduardo; Mutton,Miguel Angelo; Mutton,Márcia Justino Rossini.
The spittlebug (Mahanarva fimbriolata) has become a key pest of the sugarcane crop in Brazil with the increase of green-cane harvesting, causing stalk yield and cane quality losses. This research was undertaken to evaluate the effects of the spittlebug (Mahanarva fimbriolata) on cane quality and juice fermentation. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized 5 × 2 factorial design, with five spittlebug infestation levels (0-0.5; 0.6-2.5; 2.6-5; 5.1-8; 8.1-12.5 nymphs m-1), controlled or not with thiamethoxam (0.2 kg of active ingredient ha-1). To conduct fermentation, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (fresh and pressed baker's yeast) was inoculated to musts at a concentration of 30 g L-1. Microbiological analyses were performed at the beginning, middle...
