ABSTRACT Death-feigning behaviour occurs when the animal simulates a state of immobility. This behaviour is described for some lizard families, among them the family Gymnophthalmidae with only one record. Iphisa elegans is a diurnal and terrestrial Amazonian gymnophtalmid lizard. It has cryptic behavior and moves rapidly on the ground, hindering observations of its behavior. We report a case at the Comodoro Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. An adult male of I. elegans, when manipulated, turned its venter up and put itself in a death-feigning posture. This species is preyed upon by birds, snakes and other lizards¸ possibly behaving this way when the cryptic behaviour or escape attempt fails. More studies are necessary to evaluate the efficiency of... |

Trichechus inunguis is an endemic species of the Amazon, which inhabits mainly in lakes and calm rivers. The objective of this study case was to describe the social behaviour of two female-orphaned calves, of T. inunguis in captivity. They were kept in the same pool at the facilities of the Amazon Rescue Center (ARC, Iquitos, Peruvian Amazon). Between February and October 2011, the individuals were observed during day and night times, completing 352 hours of observation. Through ad libitum observation of the individuals, we developed a catalogue of social behaviors that includes descriptions of 93 behaviours, classified in eight behavioural categories. The frequency of behaviours was assessed by instantaneous sampling (for states) and continuous recording... |

This study evaluated the feeding behavior of F1 Holstein x Zebu cows fed increasing levels of banana peel. Diets contained 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% replacement of sorghum silage with banana peel. The experimental design was two 5x5 Latin squares. Cows were subjected to visual observation after adaptation of each trial period. The times spent in feeding (4.13 to 5.58 hours day-1) and in idle (10 to 12.53 hours day-1) presented quadratic effect. The time spent ruminating, number and duration of rumination periods, chews per cud, and numbers of cuds per day were not affected by treatments. The total chewing time showed a quadratic effect, with peak at 18.58% replacement. The banana peel levels did not affect consumption, rumination and chewing neutral detergent... |

The behavior of 15 Girolando cows from three genetic groups (1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 HG) in feedlots was evaluated. Experimental design was completely randomized with 3 treatment (genetic groups) and 5 replicates. The animals were evaluated by the variables: food, rumination, rest, locomotion, water intake, demand and time in the shade, and other activities. Group 5/8 HG spent more time feeding (267.88 min.) than groups 3/4 HG (245.55 min.) and 1/2 HG (259.55 min.). Idle standing time was higher (204.66 min.) for 3/4 HG when compared to the other groups. There was no statistical difference for the duration of rest in the shade. Solar radiation and THI were the factors which most influenced the animals’ behavior. Results show that the genetic groups 5/8 and 3/4 HG... |

Miocene tidal deposits from Las Grutas, Patagonia, Argentina, superbly preserve cylindrically laminated burrow systems including Asterosoma radiciforme von Otto and three compound ichnospecies of the newly proposed ichnogenus Patagonichnus ; P. calyciformis n. isp.; P. stratiformis n. isp.; and P . thalassiformis n. isp. Together with large, palmate burrows, probably produced by crustacean decapods, they are elite trace fossils. The Patagonichnus burrow systems consist of many distinctive concentrically laminated elementary components including: horizontal and vertical, conical and helicoidal bulbs and swellings; vertical shafts; straight and paired branches; and cone-in-cone structures. Hollow, branched, straight or helicoidal inner lined tubes connect... |

This study aimed at describing daily and seasonal variation in the activity of a population of South-American rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) in a savanna like habitat (Cerrado) in Southeastern Brazil. Seasonal and daily activities of snakes were evaluated by the number of captures of snakes during road surveys, accidental encounters, and relocations by radio-tracking. Our results show that climatic variables such as air temperature and rainfall have little influence on the activity pattern of rattlesnakes. Our findings indicate that rattlesnakes spend most of the day resting and most of the night in ambush posture. The South-American rattlesnake is active throughout the year with a discrete peak in activity of males during the matting season. The... |

An experiment was carried out to assess the performance of steers on Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon cv. Coast cross pastures by the continuous stocking method with a variable stocking rate. A completely randomized experimental design was used with two pastures representing the treatments, each containing 10 replicates. The results of t-tests demonstrated that the steers grazed for less time (7:19 h) on the B. brizantha grass pasture than the on Coast-cross grass pasture (8:13 h). There was no difference in rumination time from 6:46 and 6:89 h for the B. brizantha and Coast-cross pastures, respectively. There was a significant difference for the values regarding the time that the steers remained idle, and the animals were more frequently idle on... |

Background. There is need for more information on behavioural rhythms of fishes in relation to their habitat use in few or not previously monitored areas, such as coralligenous habitats. Some studies have compiled inventories of observable fish species in this habitat, but no studies have been performed on the temporal patterning of fish behaviour, especially at the scale of the day. The presently reported study aims at providing knowledge on finescale fluctuations of abundances and behaviour of two fish species in coralligenous habitats throughout the diurnal period. Materials and methods. Fish fauna was filmed hourly, for several days, from dusk to dawn, with autonomous, programmable, and rotating video systems. Diurnal variations in abundances per... |

Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood. |

Advances in biologging technology have enabled 3D dead-reckoning reconstruction of marine animal movements at spatiotemporal scales of meters and seconds. Examining high-resolution 3D movements of sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier, N = 4; Rhincodon typus, N = 1), sea turtles (Chelonia mydas, N = 3), penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus, N = 6), and marine mammals (Arctocephalus gazella, N = 4; Ziphius cavirostris, N = 1), we report the discovery of circling events where animals consecutively circled more than twice at relatively constant angular speeds. Similar circling behaviors were observed across a wide variety of marine megafauna, suggesting these behaviors might serve several similar purposes across taxa including foraging, social interactions, and navigation. |

The nesting behaviour of the solitary wasp Tachysphex inconspicuus (Kirby) was comparatively studied based on observations made in two environmentally distinct locations in southeast Brazil: upper portions of two sandy beaches and a dirt road in a forested area. Motor patterns related to nest construction were similar in all observed wasps, but some behavioural features, which were different among the observed wasps in the two environments, seem to be constrained by ecological factors. T. inconspicuus can be behaviourally differentiated from several other species of the genus by the following combination of features: they close the nest temporarily during its provision, do not let the excavated sand to form into a mound in front of the nest entrance,... |
