Response of diatom and dinoflagellate lifeforms to reduced phosphorus loading: a case study in the Thau lagoon, France ArchiMer
Gowen, R. J.; Collos, Y.; Tett, P.; Scherer, C.; Bec, B.; Abadie, Eric; Allen, M.; O'Brien, T..
The basin of Thau in southern France is a shallow, weakly flushed lagoon which is an important location for oyster cultivation. Phytoplankton analyses were carried out in 1975-1976 and then (almost) continuously since 1987. We report an investigation of 'the balance of organisms' in phytoplankton in relation to reductions in phosphorus loading, using two new tools based on phytoplankton lifeforms: the Plankton Index for Phytoplankton (PIp); Euclidean distance in state space. Our results show the utility of the tools for analysing changes in the ‘balance of organisms’ at the level of functional groups (in our study diatoms and dinoflagellates), but also illustrate the difficulties in demonstrating the reversal of human impacts resulting from eutrophication....

Genetic divergence among white-type acai palm accessions based on morpho-agronomic characters PAB
Sousa,Angela Maria de; Oliveira,Maria do Socorro Padilha de; Farias Neto,João Tomé de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to quantify the genetic divergence among accessions of white-type acai palm, through morpho-agronomic characters. The accessions belong to the active acai palm germplasm bank of Embrapa Amazônia Oriental. Thirteen characters were evaluated in 26 accessions, originated from six municipalities in the state of Pará, Brazil. The data were subjected to deviance and multivariate analyses, based on the average Euclidean distance, and were grouped by Tocher’s method and the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The accessions differed for eight characters. The distances among accessions ranged from 0.64 to 2.62, with an average of 1.36, and four groups were formed by Tocher’s method and two by the...

Analyzing distances AgEcon
Fenty, Justin.
Gower and Krzanowski (1999) described the analysis of a multivariate dataset that violated the assumptions of normality for multivariate analysis of variance. They developed a method comprising two aspects: a graphical representation of the points in a fewer number of dimensions, known as principal coordinate analysis; and a technique similar to MANOVA except that it was based on partitioning the distances between subjects, rather than sums of squares, and did not assume that the data followed any particular distribution. This article summarizes both aspects of their analysis and describes the Stata pco and aod commands, which perform principal coordinate analysis and analysis of distance.

Genetic variation in oriental tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) by agro-morphological traits and simple sequence repeat markers Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Darvishzadeh,Reza; Mirzaei,Leila; Maleki,Hamid Hatami; Laurentin,Hernan; Alavi,Seyyed Reza.
The objectives of this study were to assess genetic diversity and determine differences between several oriental tobacco genotypes by examining both agro-morphological traits and molecular markers. Simple lattice design with two replications was used to evaluate 100 oriental tobacco genotypes. Analysis of variance manifested that there is high level of genetic diversity in oriental-type tobaccos based on morphological traits including number of leaf, days to 50% flowering, leaf length, leaf width, leaf fresh weight, leaf dry weight, stem height and stem girth. Classification of genotypes using agro-morphological data by means of un-weighted pair-group method using arithmetic average (UPGMA) algorithm based on squared standardized Euclidean distances...
