Forest management to a large extent determines the possible services that the forest can provide. Different objectives in forest management determine the rotation length and valuation of different stages in forest succession. We present a method of mapping potential forest management at 1-km resolution to inform policy, land use modeling, and forest resource projections. The presented method calculates the suitability of a location to different forest management alternatives based on biotic, abiotic, socioeconomic, and political factors. A sensitivity analysis of the resulting map to the data sources used was performed. This showed that the results are very sensitive to some data sources. The potential use of the map and the sensitivity to the availability...

Economic Benefits Generated by Protected Areas: the Case of the Hoge Veluwe Forest, the Netherlands Ecology and Society
Hein, Lars; Department of Environmental Sciences, Wageningen University; lars.hein@wur.nl.
Eliciting the economic benefits provided by protected areas is important in order to ensure that they are properly considered in policy and decision making. There are relatively few studies that provide a comprehensive overview of the economic benefits provided by European forest ecosystems, in spite of the large share of forests in the protected area system in most countries. An economic valuation of the ecosystem services supplied by the Hoge Veluwe forest in the Netherlands is presented. The Hoge Veluwe forest is one of the largest and most well-known protected areas in the country. The services included in the study are wood production, supply of game, groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration, air filtration, recreation, and nature conservation. A...

Social Learning in European River-Basin Management: Barriers and Fostering Mechanisms from 10 River Basins Ecology and Society
Mostert, Erik; Delft University of Technology; E.Mostert@TUDelft.NL; Rees, Yvonne; WRc; yvonne.rees@wrcplc.co.uk; Searle, Brad; WRc;; Tippett, Joanne; University of Manchester; Joanne.Tippett@manchester.ac.uk.
We present and analyze 10 case studies of participatory river-basin management that were conducted as part of the European HarmoniCOP project. The main theme was social learning, which emphasizes the importance of collaboration, organization, and learning. The case studies show that social learning in river-basin management is not an unrealistic ideal. Resistance to social learning was encountered, but many instances of social learning were found, and several positive results were identified. Moreover, 71 factors fostering or hindering social learning were identified; these could be grouped into eight themes: the role of stakeholder involvement, politics and institutions, opportunities for interaction, motivation and skills of leaders and facilitators,...

A Delphi survey involving experts in forest preference research was carried out to derive scores for the recreational value of 240 forest stand types across Europe. The survey was organized around four regional panels: Great Britain, Nordic Region, Central Europe, and Iberia. In each region, 60 forest stand types were defined according to five forest management alternatives (FMAs) on a continuum of management intensity, four phases of development (establishment, young, medium, and adult), and three tree species types (conifer, broadleaved, and mixed stands of conifer and broadleaved). The resulting scores were examined using conjoint analysis to determine the relative importance of the three structural attributes (FMA, phase of development, and tree...

A large number of occurrences of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus in wild birds were reported in Europe. The relationship between the occurrence pattern and environmental factors has, however, not yet been explored. This research uses logistic regression to quantify the relationships between anthropogenic or physical environmental factors and HPAI H5N1 occurrences. Our results indicate that HPAI H5N1 occurrences are highly correlated with the following: the increased normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in December; intermediate NDVI in March; lower elevations; increased minimum temperatures in January; and reduced precipitation in January. A predictive risk map of HPAI H5N1 occurrences in wild birds in Europe was generated...

Conférence de l'EAS "Biotechnologies for quality". Barcelone, Espagne, 20-23 octobre 2004 - Rapport de mission ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis.

The Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas : a species introduced in Europe for aquaculture in the 70's to become invasive in the late 90's ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: from an introduced species for aquaculture to an invasive species for the ecosystem Miossec L. and Goulletquer Ph. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas has been introduced worldwide for aquaculture purposes since the beginning of the last century. In most of the countries the species established broadly, emphasizing its ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. In Europe the Pacific oyster was massively introduced in the 1970s especially into France after mass mortalities of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata affected by a viral disease. Good environmental conditions in some French areas on the Atlantic coast induced successful recruitments in the following years. The population became...

The 'new' European fish culture systems: Recirculating systems, offshore cages, integrated systems ArchiMer
Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bosc, Pierre; Hussenot, Jerome; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Romain, David.
Over the last few decades, European fish culture was developed mainly as a intensive monospecific activity. In most countries, marine aquaculture cannot continue to develop on the shore line where it first settled due to high competition with other activities. It has now to move either offshore or into recirculation systems located in less occupied spaces. Fresh water availability and impact of fish production farms on the environment are strongly restraining the development of the activity, which is even declining in some countries such as France. Recirculation systems make it possible to decrease water consumption and facilitate waste treatment. Their economical feasibility is being demonstrated and they offer an alternative to developing fish farms....

Extreme wave activity during 2013/2014 winter and morphological impacts along the Atlantic coast of Europe ArchiMer
Masselink, Gerd; Castelle, Bruno; Scott, Tim; Dodet, Guillaume; Suanez, Serge; Jackson, Derek; Floc'H, France.
Studies of coastal vulnerability due to climate change tend to focus on the consequences of sea level rise, rather than the complex coastal responses resulting from changes to the extreme wave climate. Here we investigate the 2013/2014 winter wave conditions that severely impacted the Atlantic coast of Europe and demonstrate that this winter was the most energetic along most of the Atlantic coast of Europe since at least 1948. Along exposed open-coast sites, extensive beach and dune erosion occurred due to offshore sediment transport. More sheltered sites experienced less erosion and one of the sites even experienced accretion due to beach rotation induced by alongshore sediment transport. Storm wave conditions such as were encountered during the 2013/2014...

Long-term and millennial-scale climate variability in northwestern France during the last 8850 years ArchiMer
Naughton, F; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Fernanda, M; Turon, J; Jouanneau, J.
Vegetation and quantitative climate reconstructions from a northwestern France shelf core (VK0358Bis) show orbital and suborbital climate variability for the last 8850 years in this region. A long-term cooling trend in summer temperatures, marked by gradual temperate and humid forest decline, parallels cooling in Greenland and the decrease of mid-latitude summer insolation reduction until at least 2000 cal. yr BP. At the long-term scale, the lowering in seasonal contrast revealed by vegetation changes follows the increase of precession. Corylus woodlands spread at the expense of deciduous Quercus forest, between 8740 and 8390 cal. yr BP, linked with the high seasonality conditions that, counterbalancing the long-term astronomical forcing trend, were...

To reduce the practice of discarding commercially fished organisms, several measures such as a discard ban and extra allowances on top of landings quotas (“catch quota”) have been proposed by the European Commission. However, for their development and successful implementation, an understanding of discard patterns on a European scale is needed. In this study, we present an inter-national synthesis of discard data collected on board commercial, towed-gear equipped vessels operating under six different national flags spanning from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Seas mainly between 2003 and 2008. We considered discarded species of commercial value such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius),...

Evaluation des ressources halieutiques de l'ouest de l'Europe par campagnes de chalutages programmés. EVHOE 871. Rapport final ArchiMer
Gueguen, Jacques.
The first phase of the assessment of halieutic resources in the west of Europe was realised thanks to the Fisheries authority for the European Communities Commission. Different operations were carried out: - Creation of a data capture and extraction software. - Carrying out of a programmed trawling cruise in the area located between 48'35 N and the Capbreton canyon, from 15 m deep to 600 m. 132 30-minutes-stations were conducted and enabled the sampling of the main captured species as well as the collection of a large biological material. - Analysis of the trawling results through kriging. This method should facilitate the analysis of the distributions of the main halieutic populations. - Analysis of the yield and size/age distributions for the most...

Evidence for higher-than-average air temperatures after the 8.2 ka event provided by a Central European δ18O record ArchiMer

The so-called 8.2 ka event represents one of the most prominent cold climate anomalies during the Holocene warm period. Accordingly, several studies have addressed its trigger mechanisms, absolute dating and regional characteristics so far. However, knowledge about subsequent climate recovery is still limited although this might be essential for the understanding of rapid climatic changes. Here we present a new sub-decadally resolved and precisely dated oxygen isotope (5180) record for the interval between 7.7 and 8.7 ka BP 10(3) calendar years before AD 1950), derived from the calcareous valves of benthic ostracods preserved in the varved lake sediments of pre-Alpine Mondsee (Austria). La pisciculture marine : un secteur industriel en émergence ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Harache, Yves.
In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterized by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost two million ECU. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Although research has started as soon as the seventies with a strong public incentive both for salmon, sea bass and sea bream, the development of these different types of aquaculture has not been done at the same pace. Some elements of sectorial dynamics are analysed such as research planning and financing, organization of the production and public policy. For...
