Influence of land use and occupation on water quality and on the diatom community of reservoirs in northeast Brazil Acta biol.Colomb.
Pereira da SILVA,Kelly Dayane; SANTOS,João Paulo de Oliveira; ARAUJO,María Cristina Santos Pereira de; MACHADO,Célia Cristina Clemente; BARBOSA,Luciana Gomes.
ABSTRACT Historically, the reduction in water quality has been associated with changes in land use, especially changes in urbanization and expansion of agricultural frontiers. The objective of this study was to understand the characteristics of the diatomological community and the use and occupation of the soil around three reservoirs (Arara, Rio do Canto and Araçagi) and natural lagoon (Lagoa do Paó) (Northeast Brazil). Land use was determined using high spatial resolution satellite images. Abiotic variables of water and total phosphorus, organic matter and diatoms in surface sediments were analyzed. Abiotic variables and assemblages of diatoms were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Four types of land use have been identified, associated...

POTENTIALLY HARMFUL CYANOBACTERIA IN OYSTER BANKS OF TÉRMINOS LAGOON, SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO Acta biol.Colomb.
POOT-DELGADO,Carlos Antonio; OKOLODKOV,Yuri B.; AKÉ-CASTILLO,José Antolin; RENDÓN von OSTEN.,Jaime.
ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria inhabit hypersaline, marine and freshwater environments. Some toxic and non-toxic species can form harmful blooms. The aim of this study was to identify potentially harmful cyanobacterial species in the oyster banks of Términos Lagoon, the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Six sample sites (up to 2-m depth) were monitored monthly from August 2012 to September 2013. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen saturation (% DO), inorganic nutrients and abundance of cyanobacteria were determined. Temperature and salinity were characterized by marked seasonal differences (26.8 to 30.6 °C and 6.1 to 19.5, respectively). The pH values (ranging from 7.1 to 8.4) and the % DO (88.4 to 118.2 %) suggest a predominance of photosynthetic...

Effects of ocean warming, eutrophication and salinity variations on the growth of habitat-forming macroalgae in estuarine environments Acta Botanica
Borburema,Henrique Douglas dos Santos; Lima,Ruth Pessoa de; Miranda,George Emmanuel Cavalcanti de.
ABSTRACT Global change and coastal eutrophication are affecting macroalgae worldwide. We analyzed the effects of increased water temperature (25, 28 and 32 °C) and eutrophication on the growth of Bostrychia binderi and Bostrychia montagnei in a range of salinities (18, 24, 30, 36 and 42 PSU) through three independent multifactorial experiments. Both species had higher growth at 25 °C than at 28 and 32 °C (warming scenario projected by IPCC), suggesting a negative effect of ocean warming. The species showed a broad tolerance to the range of salinities tested, with higher growth at 36 and 42 PSU, as a local adaptation strategy. Oligotrophic seawater significantly affected the growth of both species because the lowest growth was found in this condition,...

Preliminary analysis on the use of Trophic State Indexes in a brazilian semiarid reservoir Biological Sciences
Lima, Paulo de Freitas; Sousa, Mart Som Reis; Porfírio, André Ferreira; Almeida, Beatriz Soares; Freire, Rogério Herlon Furtado; Santaella, Sandra Tédde.
The Carlson’s (1977) Trophic State Index (TSI) is a widely employed tool to estimate the degree of eutrophication in a reservoir. In Brazil, the need of a classification system that would take into account regional characteristics employed adjusted indexes generated by data from reservoirs in the southeastern region of the country. Current research compares responses for Carlson’s TSI (1977) and its derivations for Brazilian reservoirs from data collected in the Pereira de Miranda Reservoir (State of Ceará, Brazil), and analyzes the influence of local conditions on results and their applicability to reservoirs in the semiarid region. TSIs were calculated by data on total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and water transparency. The reservoir was estimated as...

Ecotoxicity assessment in aquaculture system using the test organism Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (Chlorophyceae) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i4.9391 Biological Sciences
Miashiro, Luciana; Instituto de Pesca; Lombardi, Julio Vicente; Instituto de Pesca; Mercante, Cacilda Thais Janson; Instituto de Pesca.
The purpose of this study is to perform toxicity tests with microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (Chlorophyceae) using inland water samples to evaluate the impact caused by aquaculture. Six field samples were collected ranged November 2006 to March 2007, at Experimental Station, Pindamonhangaba, State of São Paulo. Abiotic factors pointed out to the mesotrophic and eutrophic characteristics already observed at the fish pond and its effluent. The results of ecotoxicological tests carried out with the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata showed that the fish pond effluent was potential enough to stimulate the algal growth, therefore eutrophication, to the extent that it is naturally diluted to at least 12.5% of its initial concentration. This...

Seasonal effects of wastewater to the water quality of the Caeté river estuary, Brazilian Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira,Luci C.C.; Monteiro,Marcela C.; Guimarães,Danielly O.; Matos,Jislene B.; Costa,Rauquírio M. da.
Bragança's socioeconomic situation is highly dependent on estuarine and marine biological resources that are influenced by tidal cycles and climatology. Field measurements (hydrological, hydrodynamic and microbiological variables) were taken in the most urbanized zone from Caeté estuary to characterise the quality of the local environment. During the dry period, the estuary was more eutrophic and presented the highest temperature (30.5 °C in Oct./06), salinity (17 psu in Feb./07), pH (8.24 in Feb./07) and fecal coliform (> 1000 MPN/100 ml in Dec./06 and Feb./07) values. The phytoplankton Cyclotella meneghiniana, Coscinodiscus centralis and other r-strategist species were observed. The lack of basic hydric canalization was responsible for the local...

Trophic dynamics (Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen-DIN and Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus-DIP) in tropical urban estuarine systems during periods of high and low river discharge rates Anais da ABC (AABC)
NORIEGA,CARLOS; ARAUJO,MOACYR; FLORES-MONTES,MANUEL; ARAUJO,JULIA.
Abstract: This paper focused on the use of the biogeochemical LOICZ (Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone) to investigate the dynamics of DIN and DIP nutrients among three highly urbanized tropical estuaries (Barra das Jangadas (BJ), Recife (RE) and Timbó (TB)), located in the northeastern region of Brazil. The input data were obtained through in situ measurements (2007) and governmental agency databases (2001-2007). The balances of the non-conservative elements showed that the RE and TB systems alternated between sources and sinks during the observation periods (0.2-0.8 mmoles DIP m-2 d-1 and 0.1-10 mmoles DIN m-2 d-1). The metabolism rates in the systems indicated that the BJ system was autotrophic during the two observation periods (10-26 mmoles...

Influence of water volume reduction on the phytoplankton dynamics in a semi-arid man-made lake: A comparison of two morphofunctional approaches Anais da ABC (AABC)
BRAGA,GUSTAVO G.; BECKER,VANESSA.
Abstract Significant reductions in the water levels of lakes are influenced by droughts and freshwater demands, especially in semi-arid regions, where hydric stress is greater. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamics of phytoplankton during two different water volume periods resulting from an extended drought in a semi-arid lake. Another objective was to compare two functional approaches to test which one of these best captures phytoplankton variability as a function of environmental variability. Multivariate analyses performed using the Reynolds Functional Groups (RFG) and Morphology-Based Functional Groups (MBFG) classification schemes indicated two periods, high and a low water volume. The results demonstrated the importance of light...

Phosphorus dynamics in a highly polluted urban drainage channel-shallow reservoir system in the Brazilian semiarid Anais da ABC (AABC)
ARAÚJO,GERMÁRIO M.; LIMA NETO,IRAN E.; BECKER,HELENA.
Abstract: This paper investigates phosphorus dynamics in a highly polluted system composed of a drainage channel followed by a shallow reservoir in the city of Fortaleza, Brazilian semiarid. During the dry season, significant non-point source loads of total phosphorus originated from residences unconnected to sewers were identified along the channel, resulting in an increasing flow rate of untreated sewage towards the reservoir. During the rainy season, as a consequence of dilution, phosphorus concentrations decreased by about 5-fold. The results also revealed that the reservoir was acting similarly to a waste stabilization pond, with phosphorus removal efficiency of about 33%. Assuming one-dimensional flow for the channel and complete mixing for the...

Modelling the impact of sediment management on the trophic state of a tropical reservoir with high water storage variations Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIRA,CAMILA C.S; MEDEIROS,PEDRO H.A.; NETO,IRAN E. LIMA.
Abstract Eutrophication of lakes has affected society in many regions, particularly in water scarce environments where: i) low runoff reduces the self-purification potential of water bodies; ii) water supply relies on surface reservoirs, which are susceptible to nutrient enrichment. This work presents an assessment of the impact of the silted sediment management on the trophic status of a tropical surface reservoir with intense temporal variability of water storage. A complete mixing model describing the total phosphorus budget in the water and sediments was used, based on semi-empirical formulations. The sediment reuse as soil fertilizer has been proposed to increase productivity in small scale agriculture, which should also enhance the water quality by...

Low water quality in tropical fishponds in southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,SIMONE M.; APPEL,ELEONORA; MACEDO,CARLA F.; HUSZAR,VERA L.M..
Expansion of aquaculture around the world has heavily impacted the environment. Because fertilizers are needed to raise fish, one of the main impacts is eutrophication, which lowers water quality and increases the frequency of algal blooms, mostly cyanobacteria. To evaluate whether the water quality in 30 fishponds in southeastern Brazilian met the requirements of Brazilian legislation, we analyzed biotic and abiotic water conditions. We expected that the high nutrient levels due to fertilization would cause low water quality. We also analyzed cyanotoxins in seston and fish muscle in some systems where cyanobacteria were dominant. The fishponds ranged from eutrophic and hypereutrophic with high phytoplankton biomass. Although cyanobacteria were dominant in...

Dinoflagellates of the genus Ceratium are chiefly marine but there are rare occurrences in freshwater. In this study we analyze the invasion and progressive establishment of Ceratium furcoides, an exotic species, in the Furnas Reservoir. Samples were taken at 36 points in the reservoir, during the months of March, June, September and December, 2007. Measurements of some physical and chemical variables were simultaneously performed at each site. The occurrence of C. furcoides was registered at 20 sites, with densities varying between 0.57 and 28,564,913.0 ind.m-3. Blooms of this species were recorded in points which were classified as mesotrophic, coinciding with the places receiving high amounts of untreated domestic sewage. C. furcoides density was...

Faustino,Samantha Borges; Fontana,Luciane; Bartozek,Elaine Cristina Rodrigues; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos; Bicudo,Denise de Campos.
Fresh water biodiversity is an increasing concern due to growing human impact. Herein, we report a long-term survey (ca. 90 years) of sedimentary diatoms and the modern flora from surface sediments and their biodiversity changes along a eutrophication gradient. Study was carried out in one of the most important water supply reservoirs (Guarapiranga Reservoir) of São Paulo Metropolitan Region, Brazil. Results are based on 75 core subsamples (subfossil assemblages from core) previously dated by 210Pb and 14 samples from surface sediments (modern assemblages). Overall, 84 taxa were reported, belonging to 30 genera, 71 species and eight non-typical varieties, besides five probable new taxa. Results expanded two new additions for the Brazilian diatom flora...

Floating Aquatic Macrophytes Decrease the Methane Concentration in the Water Column of a Tropical Coastal Lagoon: Implications for Methane Oxidation and Emission BABT
Fonseca,André Luiz dos Santos; Marinho,Claudio Cardoso; Esteves,Franscisco de Assis.
ABSTRACT In wetlands, the knowledge accumulated on the role of aquatic plants in the methane cycle focused on emergent macrophytes, to the detriment of other typologies. Herein, we evaluated whether the free-floating macrophyte Salvinia auriculata Aubl. and the floating-leaved macrophyte Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth. decrease the water column methane concentrations compared to a plant-free surface. We prepared microcosms by inserting an individual of S. auriculata or of E. azurea into chambers filled with lagoon water previously bubbled with CH4. Another set of chambers was incubated only with the prepared water, representing the plant-free surface. Half of the chambers were kept in the dark and half in sunlight to simulate a diel cycle. We observed...

Bacterial production in Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) evaluated by ³H-leucine incorporation BABT
Gonzalez,Alessandra M.; Paranhos,Rodolfo; Andrade,Luciana; Valentin,Jean L..
The aim of this work was to evaluate the necessary ³H-leucine concentration to estimate bacterial production in Guanabara Bay through saturation curves. A second aim was to collect preliminary data of bacterial production in two distinct sites corresponding to different water qualities: Urca inlet and Governador Island. Saturation curves were made with water samples taken at the main circulation channel of the bay, Paquetá Island, and the two sites mentioned before. The ³H-leucine curves showed similar pattern for all studied areas, indicating the ideal isotope concentration to be 10 nM. Bacterial biomass production ranged from 0.40 to 4.53 µgC L-1 h-1 in Urca and from 3.86 to 73.72 µgC L-1 h-1 in Governador Island indicating the relationship between...

Impact of the Icaraí Sewage Outfall in Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Marques Júnior,Aguinaldo Nepomuceno; Crapez,Mirian Araujo Carlos; Barboza,Conceição Denise Nunes.
The present study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Icaraí Sewage Outfall (ISEO) area. Sampling was conducted during winter and summer, and water samples were analyzed for dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrients (DIN), seston, particulate organic matter (POM), and pigments. Results showed that the water chemistry of the area suffers temporal and spatial variation. Great variability was also seen in the C:N:P ratios of POM (August, 112:30:1; December, 59:11:1) and in the DIN concentrations. Chlorophyll-a and ammonium concentrations (4.5 µg L-1 - 71.2 µg L-1, and 0.20 µM - 52,6 µM, respectively) characterized the ISEO area as eutrophic. The dispersal of the material was not effective under certain oceanographic...

Influence of effluents from a Wastewater Treatment Plant on nutrient distribution in a coastal creek from southern Brazil BABT
Santos,Isaac Rodrigues; Costa,Ronaldo Cataldo; Freitas,Ubiratan; Fillmann,Gilberto.
The hypothesis that effluents treated through activated sludge process cause changes in nutrient biogeochemistry of receiving water bodies was investigated in Vieira creek, southern Brazil. Dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, and pH did not vary among the sampling stations. Nutrient, biochemical oxygen demand, and conductivity values were significantly higher downstream from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents. Further downstream, nitrate concentrations were higher due to ammonium nitrification, organic matter remineralization and/or the occurrence of unidentified sources. Per capita nutrient emission factors were estimated to be 0.16 kg P.yr-1 and 4.14 kg N.yr-1. Under pristine conditions, low N:P ratios were observed, which were significantly...

In view of the intimate relationship of humans with coastal lagoons (used for recreation, tourism, water supply, etc.), the discharge of domestic effluents may lead to the establishment of routes of dissemination of pathogenic microorganisms, including microorganisms carrying genes for resistance to antimicrobials, through the surrounding human communities. The objective of the present investigation was to relate the presence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to the environmental characteristics of three coastal lagoons, comparing the results with those from hospital sewage. Of the lagoons evaluated, two (Geribá and Imboassica) receive domestic sewage discharge, and the other (Cabiúnas) is still in a natural state. We isolated in a culture medium...
