Planktic foraminifer and coccolith contribution to carbonate export fluxes over the central Kerguelen Plateau ArchiMer
Rembauville, M.; Meilland, J.; Ziveri, P.; Schiebel, R.; Blain, S.; Salter, I..
We report the contribution of planktic foraminifers and coccoliths to the particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) export fluxes collected over an annual cycle (October 2011/September 2012) on the central Kerguelen Plateau in the Antarctic Zone (AAZ) south of the Polar Front (PF). The seasonality of PIC flux was decoupled from surface chlorophyll a concentration and particulate organic carbon (POC) fluxes and was characterized by a late summer (February) maximum. This peak was concomitant with the highest satellite-derived sea surface PIC and corresponded to a Emiliania huxleyi coccoliths export event that accounted for 85% of the annual PIC export. The foraminifer contribution to the annual PIC flux was much lower (15%) and dominated by Turborotalita...

Bel Hassen, Malika.
French estuaries, from the Atlantic coast to the English channel, have been characterized by a poor phytoplankton biomass. The turbidity has always been considered as the limiting factor for phytoplankton. Estuarine ecosystems are situated at the boundary between the land and the sea. Consequently, they are subject to an enrichment by nutrient loadings from upland ecosystems. Although it has been demonstrated that a part of the nutrient loadings support an important benthic production. The part, which escapes to the estuarine benthic and planktonic food web and is exported to adjacent estuarine ecosystems, still remains undetermined. Quantifying the nu trient and particulate matter exchange between a macrotidal Bay, the Fier d'Ars, and the adjacent ocean...

The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Equine '98 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's equine population for education and research purposes. Equine viral arteritis population for education and research purposes. Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is an infectious disease caused by the equine arteritis virus (EAV). It can cause abortion in pregnant mares and death in young foals. Breeding stallions may become permanent carriers of the virus. Financial losses may include those due to abortion and/or disease and death in very young foals, reduced demand to breed and/or decreased commercial value of persistently infected stallions, and denied export market for...

MODELLING THE DYNAMICS OF PRODUCTION ADJUSTMENT TO SHORT-TERM MARKET SHOCKS AgEcon
Niemi, Jarkko K.; Lehtonen, Heikki.
Models of agricultural economics typically operate at an annual basis or in a static equilibrium framework where inputs, outputs and their prices may change considerably. Production dynamics, however, imply that models relying on spatial and temporal aggregation do not capture the effects of biological constraints in the short run. This paper examines short and long-term impacts of demand and production cost shocks in the pig sector. The analysis is carried out with a dynamic programming model which takes into account changes in export and domestic demand and market clearing price. It optimizes the supply of piglets on a monthly basis. Econometric techniques are used to estimate demand functions. Short-term negative market shocks can already have...

The impact of the government policies and incentives to promote the export of agricultural products in Tunisia: case of olive oil AgEcon
Larbi, Walid; Chymis, Athanasios G..
The agricultural sector is very important for the Tunisian economy as it absorbs 10% of the total investment, generates 12% of the Gross Domestic Product (2002-2006) and employs 16% of the total labor force while the agro food exports represent 10% of the total export. The aim of this article is to review: a) the agreements related to the export of the olive oil between Tunisia and the European Union (EU) and b) the agricultural policies and incentives enforced by the government to increase the export of olive oil. For the above mentioned aims, we obtained and analyzed data from the Ministry of Agriculture in order to analyze them and find the policies and incentives that help to increase the export of olive oil.

DECLINING U.S. TOBACCO EXPORTS TO AUSTRALIA: A DERIVED DEMAND APPROACH TO COMPETITIVENESS AgEcon
Hu, Fan; Beghin, John C..
We investigate the loss of competitiveness of U.S. tobacco leaf exports in Australian cigarette manufacturing using industry-level time-series data. We account for relative prices, distorting policies, maturation of the cigarette market and scale, changing cigarette characteristics and market structure. We provide a decomposition analysis that reveals the relative impact of these factors over time on U.S. tobacco exports to Australia.

Agrárgazdaság és az „erős” forint AgEcon
Gazdag, Laszlo.
A Jegybank feladata a pénzstabilitás megteremtése és fenntartása, míg a többi cél (növekedés, foglalkoztatottság, egyensúly stb.) megvalósítása a gazdaságpolitikai eszköztár és intézményrendszer egyéb területeire tartozik. A pénzstabilitás primátusa ma már elfogadott a nyugati közgazdasági gondolkodásban. A valutaleértékelés kétélű fegyver, csupán az elavult exportszerkezetet konzerválja, a hatékonysági korlátok puhítása révén. A magyar gazdaság importfüggősége technikai jellegű, ezért a leértékelés csupán inflációs nyomást eredményez. --------------------- Establishment and...

THE EFFECT OF EXCHANGE RATE VOLATILITY ON WHEAT TRADE WORLDWIDE AgEcon
Sun, Changyou; Kim, Mina; Koo, Won W.; Cho, Guedae; Jin, Hyun Joung.
A modified gravity-type model was employed to evaluate the effect of exchange rate volatility on wheat exports worldwide. Special attention was given to the econometric properties of the gravity model within panel framework. Short and long-term measures of exchange rate volatility were constructed and compared. Both measures of exchange rate volatility have exhibited a negative effect on world wheat trade and the long-term effect was even larger. This result implies that exchange rate volatility is an important factor in explaining the trade pattern of wheat trade worldwide. Keywords: wheat, export, exchange rate, volatility, gravity model, and panel data.

The Sophistication and Diversification of the African Agricultural Sector: A Product Space Approach AgEcon
Badibanga, Thaddee Mutumba; Ulimwengu, John M..
We use the concept of the product space to analyze the key features of the transformation process in Africa with a focus on the agricultural sector. Between 1962 and 2008, we find that both specialization and diversification occur for the overall economy and across sectors. Our findings also confirm that the transformation of the African economy is driven primarily by the increasing specialization of nonagricultural exports. However, the transformation process is still moving more slowly than that of an emerging economy such as Brazil. The index of specialization of agricultural exports grew at a modest annual rate of 2.1 percent between 1962 and 2008, compared to 5.0 percent for nonagricultural exports and 4.1 percent for the overall economy. Although...

Firms’ International Status and Heterogeneity in Performance: Evidence From Italy AgEcon
Casaburi, Lorenzo; Gattai, Valeria; Minerva, G. Alfredo.
This paper revisits the empirical evidence about the link between firms’ performance and their international status, based on a large sample of Italian enterprises. To this purpose, we merged two waves of the Capitalia survey (1998-2000, and 2001-2003) retrieving firm level data for roughly 7,000 units. Three results stand out from our empirical exercise. First, firms that engage in the foreign production of final goods, in addition to export activities, are more productive than firms that only export abroad. Second, firms that engage in final goods off-shoring are more productive than firms that engage in inputs off-shoring. Third, in terms of the productivity dynamics over the period 1998-2003, exporters’ performance in Italy was not any better than the...

Export, Assembly-line FDI or FDI with the Possibility of Technology Diffusion: Optimal Entry Mode for Multinationals AgEcon
Banerjee (Chatterjee), Tanmoyee; Mitra, Nilanjana.
The paper tries to evaluate the optimal entry mode of a Multinational Company that is choosing among export, fragmented production structure with assembly-line FDI in LDC or complete production in LDC with FDI. The results show that if the plant installation cost is sufficiently high then the firm will find it profitable to export the finished product to the LDC market and the Government will not exercise any IPR restriction. If plant installation cost is below a certain critical level the MNC chooses complete LDC production with FDI over assembly-line FDI if the IPR restriction is strong, where the model assumes that a fake producer can copy the product if complete production takes place in LDC. In such a situation government will choose to protect IPR if...

TERRITORIAL AND NATURAL PRIORITIES OF MACEDONIA - IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR TOBACCO PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Kabranova, Romina; Arsov, Zlatko.
Territory and natural conditions in Macedonia are well known in the World market of high quality production of oriental type of tobacco. Production of oriental tobacco at such a small territory is insignificant towards other producers (Bulgaria, Turkey), buy it is very important for Macedonian economy. The high value of exported tobacco and other tobacco products is regularly above 100 million USD (113 million USD for 2006 and 106 million USD for 2007). As a family production with low grade of mechanized labor processes, it provides survival of more than 100 000 residents of Macedonia. These reasons are enough to evaluate the importance of tobacco for a country with a gross national income per capita of around $4,120 in 2008, (GNI, Atlas method) and high...

Empirical Analysis on the Impacts on Chinese Agro-products Export Caused by Technical Barrier to Trade on Chinese Agro-products Export AgEcon
Zhao, Qi.
In view of the impacts on Chinese agro-products export caused by various technical barriers to trade, the academic circles analyzed it from the costs and quantity of exported agro-products. On the basis of the status quo of Chinese agro-products, the gravity model is introduced to analyze the impacts on Chinese agro-product export caused by technical barriers to trade. The results show that as long as the quality of Chinese agro-products can achieve the standard set by developed countries, for one thing, the health of Chinese consumers can be ensured, for another thing, the export of Chinese agro-products will be more smooth, which can provide reference for our government making decisions and solving trade dispute.

A magyar marhahús versenyesélyei az EU-ban AgEcon
Meszaros, Kornelia; Beres, Daniel.
A tanulmány a magyarországi vágásra szánt, élőszarvasmarha-külkereskedelem versenyképességét, komparatív előnyeit és hátrányait vizsgálja az 1999–2010 közötti időszakban. A marhahús jelentős része elsősorban exportra kerül. A mutatók tendenciáját tekintve a hátrány mértéke évről évre csökkenő. A külkereskedelmi mérleg minden vizsgált évben aktív. A 2008-ban kibontakozott pénzügyi válság hatása ugyanakkor érződött, s jelentős visszaesést okozott, ami mindhárom mutató értékeiben megnyilvánult.

The value of market uncertainty in a livestock epidemic AgEcon
Niemi, Jarkko K.; Lehtonen, Heikki.
Introduction of foot and mouth disease (FMD) into country typically initiates eradication procedures which remove animals from the market, and halts the export of livestock products from the infected country. The magnitude of these effects can be highly uncertain. This paper presents a stochastic dynamic programming model which simulates possible market implications of alternative FMD and export scenarios in the Finnish pig sector. It takes into account dynamics and adjustment of the animal stock, price movements and uncertainty related to the duration of the trade ban. Results suggest that losses to pig producers can increase considerably when the risk of prolonged export ban increases. Production adjustments also strengthen. Consumers can gain from a...

A fagyasztott zöldségek fogyasztási preferenciáinak vizsgálata AgEcon
Nemeth-T., Anett; Vincze-Tóth, Judit; Trojan, Szabolcs.
A magyar hűtőipar számára a külföldi piacokon való értékesítés nagy jelentőségű.
