Fault reactivation and rift localization: Northeastern Gulf of Aden margin 5
Bellahsen, N; Fournier, M; D'Acremont, E; Leroy, S; Daniel, Jm.
[1] The Gulf of Aden and the Sheba spreading ridge ( Gulf of Aden) forms the southern boundary of the Arabian Plate. Its orientation ( 075 degrees E) and its kinematics ( about 030 degrees E divergence) are interpreted as the result of an oblique rifting. In this contribution, a field study in the northeastern Gulf of Aden allows us to confirm the Oligo-Miocene synrift directions of extension and to precise the normal fault network geometry. The synrift extensions are 020 degrees E and 160 degrees E ( possibly in this chronological order); the normal faults strike 070 degrees E, 090 degrees E, and 110 degrees E. The results show that some characteristics are consistent with oblique rifting analogue models, while some others are not. Especially, fault...

A magyarországi mezőgazdasági szaktanácsadás intézményi jellemzői 31
Szekely, Erika.
A mezőgazdasági tanácsadás jelentős múltra tekint vissza hazánkban. Hosszabb távon a tanácsadás piacvezéreltté tétele szolgálja leginkább a...

MORALE AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS 31
Purcell, Wayne D..
Morale and faculty development are closely related. The agricultural economics profession must decide what it is about. There is room to practice the principle of comparative advantage and allow a degree of specialization in teaching, extension, and research. To continue in the role of an applied discipline, there must also be an opportunity for the young professional to establish rapport with, and understanding of, the private sector and the policy-making arena. If that is to happen, there must be encouragement in the institutional setting and by faculty colleagues who respect the importance of investment in building rapport and in establishing credibility. If that environment is present, morale should be good and faculty development will occur.

The Changing Public Role in Services to Agriculture: The Case of Information 31
Zezza, Annalisa.
The paper analyzes the changes that have taken place in the nature of agriculture information and their consequences on the public role of related public services with specific regard to process undergoing in the European Union. Increased interest in food quality and food safety issues in a global consumer driven society, together with major attention to environmental and ethical issues related to food production, enlarge both the object of agricultural information and the audience of stakeholders in the food chain and in the general public. Information policy with regard to a multifunctional approach to agriculture, can be finalized to correct three main sources of market failures as access to information, quality and adverse selection and externalities...

SELECTING DELIVERY METHODS FOR OUTREACH EDUCATION PROGRAMS 31
Carter, Bryson R.; Batte, Marvin T..
Farmer perceptions of extension program delivery methods and an analysis of the relationships of method and farmer characteristics to evaluation scores are presented. Evaluation scores tend to increase with written, interactive and variable-scheduled methods and methods where users determine the agenda. Evaluations tend to be lower for high user cost and "high-tech" methods. Substantial similarity of results exists across groups of farmers differing by age, education levels, farm size and farm type. There are differences, however, in absolute valuation of the method characteristics across the groups.

An Assessment of the Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts of the Ricecheck Program 31
Singh, Rajinder Pal; Brennan, John P.; Lacy, John; Steel, Felicity.
Ricecheck, a best management practices extension program for rice production in Australia, was developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries advisory staff, Finley, in 1986. The program is based on eight best management practice recommendations called ‘Key Checks’ that are considered essential for achieving high yields. Economic analysis of the program reveals that there are significant financial, social and environment benefits from the adoption of the program. The results further reveal that the funds invested since 1986 by both NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation have been sound investments.

REGIONAL TRENDS IN EXTENSION SYSTEM RESOURCES 31
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Yee, Jet; Bottum, John S..
In 1914, the Cooperative Extension Service was established to disseminate information about agriculture and home economics from land-grant universities to the U.S. public. At that time, about 30 percent of U.S. workers were in agriculture-related occupations; by the late 1990s, that share had declined to about 1 percent. Today, the Extension System ("Extension") is largely publicly funded and links the educational and research arms of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, land-grant universities, and related institutions. The system has changed along with its audience. The number of full-time-equivalent Extension personnel dropped by 12 percent from 1977 to 1997, with the largest declines found in community resource development and 4-H youth programs, two of...

A New Look at the Agricultural Community as Extension Clientele in the West 31
Tranel, Jeffrey E.; Hewlett, John P.; Weigel, Randolph R.; Rahman, Tauhidur; Teegerstrom, Trent; Ehmke, Cole.
This report presents the preliminary results of a statistically valid 2006 survey of small agricultural producers (sales of less than $50,000) in three Western states (Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona). The West has undergone significant change, and the composition of farm managers has changed with it. This report provides information from farm operators in the rural West on their perceived threats as well as characteristics of themselves and their operations. Topics of interest were demographics, reasons for involvement in agriculture, income, resource management (crops and livestock), and preferences for information delivery. The project was supported by the Western Center for Risk Management Education.

A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI VÁLLALATI GAZDASÁGTAN FEJLŐDÉSE ÉS A MAI GYAKORLAT 31
Szekely, Csaba.
The development of Hungarian agricultural business economics and management used to evolve in accordance with international leaders of the sector. On the other hand, a paradox situation has emerged in Hungary in the last two decades, in which such knowledge is only partially applied as a consequence of insufficient knowledge transfer and highly restructured agriculture. In the framework of an EU-6 research project, reviewing the agricultural risk management practices of some EU Member States, including Hungary, became possible. The study highlights those issues that are the most characteristic in terms of the level of information, management, marketing and finance. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the level of management of Hungarian agricultural...

Do Management Profiles Matter? An Analysis of Belgian Dairy Farmers 31
Vandermersch, Mieke; Mathijs, Erik.
To assess the performance of a farmer and to identify best practice among a group of farmers, the assumption is often made that all farmers maximize profits and thus share the same business goals. However, performance differs due to personal characteristics, objectives and strategies. A survey carried out among 73 Belgian dairy farmers revealed that for only 34% of the farmers "profit maximization" is a primary objective. A regression analysis revealed that self-declared profit maximizers only obtained a higher farm income per liter, not per labour unit. Through cluster analysis, four main groups of farmers were found with similar objectives and management ideas: (A) risk-taking and progressive cow farmers, (B) riskaverse and progressive labour savers, (C)...

THE INCREASING ROLE OF AGRIBUSINESS IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS 31
Heiman, Amir; Miranowski, John A.; Zilberman, David; Alix-Garcia, Jennifer Marie.
While the demand for traditional agricultural economics is diminishing, there is a growing need for the economics and management of the food sector and the environment. Departments of agricultural economics have shown great flexibility in including agribusiness in their Bachelor's and Master's teaching programs. Ph.D and research programs appear to adjust more slowly to changing demand. Although agricultural economics programs are providing a variety of service course offerings, opportunities for joint programs with biological, physical, and natural sciences, particularly resource management, are not being exploited. If business schools decide to compete for agribusiness students in the future, missed opportunities with other departments and schools may...

STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS EXTENSION; OR DOES DIFFEDENCE, DECADENCE AND DISSONANCE MAKE A DIFFERENCE? 31
McDowell, George R..
Discussion of changes taking place in American agriculture followed by a review of the traditional model of extension suggests there is dissonance between what is needed to inform contemporary agriculture and what extension actually does. The paper further suggests that difficulty in packaging the newly needed information in ways that achieve the institutional maintenance objectives of extension explain a part of the system's decadence and reluctance to charge. Since the intellectual problems of market failure, even political market failure, are within the domain of economists, diffidence by agricultural economists to those issues within the Land-Grant system can make a difference.
