Production of Innovations within Farmer–Researcher Associations Applying Transdisciplinary Research Principles Organic Eprints
Nicolay, Gian L.; Fliessbach, Andreas.
Small-scale farmers in sub-Saharan West Africa depend heavily on local resources and local knowledge. Science-based knowledge is likely to aid decision-making in complex situations. In this presentation, we highlight a FiBL-coordinated research partnership between three national producer organisations and national agriculture research bodies in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Benin. The partnership seeks to compare conventional, GMObased, and organic cotton systems as regards food security and climate change.

Video on mobile phones as an effective way to promote sustainable practices by facilitating innovation uptake in Mali Organic Eprints
Sousa, Fernando; Nicolay, Gian; Home, Robert.
• Mobile-phone videos could be accessed by people with limited or no contact with information sources, such as younger women, and video based information was found to be understandable for illiterate farmers. • The use of video on mobile phones is a novel approach to farmer-to-farmer exchange and has great potential for enhancing dissemination programs or specific research and development projects to enable more resilient, inclusive and democratic agricultural information systems. • Of the farmers who had watched one of the videos (N = 148), 60.1 % had adopted at least one of the videos’ innovations. • Farmers who received the videos on their mobile phones shared them via Bluetooth with an average of 6 other farmers, quickly expanding their outreach.

Information technologies as a tool for agricultural extension and farmer-to-farmer exchange: Mobile-phone video use in Mali... Organic Eprints
Sousa, Fernando; Gian, Nicolay; Home, Robert.
Mobile phones are widespread in the rural areas of Mali and Burkina Faso, but their potential as a tool for knowledge transfer by extension services in the region remains largely unexplored. The aim of this contribution is to evaluate the potential of video on mobile phones as a tool for farmer-to-farmer exchange and agricultural extension in Western Africa's rural reality. This aim was addressed by interviewing 460 farmers in Mali and Burkina Faso. Third generation (3G) mobile phones with video and Bluetooth technology were found to be widespread in the study area. Furthermore, videos on 3G phones were found to have a high frequency of contact and a high information utility. The participating farmers reported that 3G phones are readily accessible:...

Organic School Gardens in Ghana Organic Eprints
Vos, Inge.
The Organic School Garden Project has developed organic gardens in 24 schools in Ghana between January 2008 and December 2010. The gardens produce vegetables and fruits that are used in the pupils'meals. The organic gardens are also being used as demonstration fields for Farmer Field Schools (FFS), to train local farmers in organic farming practices.

Braun, Sepp; Hermanowski, Robert; Kempkens, Karl; Klöble, Ulrike; Neuerburg, Wolfgang; Radu, Frank; Williges, Ute.

African Organic Agriculture Training Manual Organic Eprints
The African Organic Agriculture Training Manual project, which was started in October 2009 by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture aims at delivering and enabling best farming practices to farmers, farmer groups, extension workers and trainers. The appropriate training materials will help extension workers to better address and communicate with small-holder farmers, and as a result encourage application of new technologies for sustainable agriculture. This training manual is a key ingredient in the dissemination of sustainable agriculture best practices.

Rachel Carson, a Voice for Organics - the First Hundred Years Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Rachel Carson has been described as "an early supporter of organic farming". Publishing in 1962, she awoke a generation past, to the false promises of the “war on weeds”, the “war against the insects” and “better living through chemistry”. Carson wrote to a friend: “there would be no peace for me if I kept silent”. She asked the world to consider: “Can anyone believe it is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons on the surface of the earth without making it unfit for all life?”. Carson has been described by TIME Magazine as one of “the 100 most influential people of the 20th century” and her book has been described as “the most influential book of the past 50 years”- yet on the occasion of the centenary of her birth, the author found that university...
