Organic Horticultural Seed in Wales - A survey of growers’ experiences of varieties grown from organic seed in 2006 Organic Eprints
Little, Tony.
The Organic Standards require organic producers to use organic seed. However, a derogation can be obtained from certification bodies to allow the use of non organic seed where appropriate organic material is not available in the UK. An official database of organic seed availability, ‘Organicxseeds’, has been developed and is used as the basis for derogation decisions. However, there is a lack of information and a great deal of uncertainty in the minds of growers, about the performance of many varieties available in organic seed. This means that growers could potentially have to make variety choices on the basis little or no information. For the last 4 years, Organic Centre Wales, with support from Farming Connect, has coordinated a survey to help...

EFRC Cereal Variety and Mixture Trials 2001 – Preliminary Results Organic Eprints
Welsh, James.
Of 7 winter wheats grown at 3 sites in southern England in 2001, the highest yielding was the soft wheat Claire; the breadmaking varieties Hereward, Shamrock and Spark did well. Of the feed wheats, Aardvark outyielded Deben. Of various variety mixtures tried, Aardvark/Claire/Deben was highest yielding. When seed was saved from the 2000 harvest of Hereward/Malacca/Shamrock and grown in 2001, it outyielded the first generation mixture, suggesting that some adaptation had occurred, relative composition changing in response to the local conditions. Winter oats and triticale were trialled at one site in Berkshire. The triticales Ego and Fidelio performed well, as did the winter oat Kingfisher. The oat mixture Ego/Fidelio/Taurus outyielded the mean of its...

Farmer's Eye and Breeder's Eye - Fields of Knowledge Exchange as a Condition of a Participatory Breeding Approach Organic Eprints
Timmermann, Martin.
With the change to organic agriculture, the diversity of local conditions becomes more important. Local adapted varieties are necessary. But breeding for this demand is not profitable for a conventional breeding strategy. An alternative can be a participatory breeding approach (PPB). Evolved in the context of international development cooperation, this approach is increasingly discussed in the European context. Communication between farmers and breeders is a key issue in participatory breeding. Farmer`s and breeder`s eye have different perspectives on the plants and different knowledge gained through experience. Those perspectives and experiences need to be exchanged. As an outcome of the investigation of “The breeder`s eye” on the example of the...
