Computer-aided engineering (CAE) approach to design a cultivator for small farm holdings in the West Bengal state of India CIGR Journal
Mandal, Dipankar.
Small and marginal farms are one of the big challenges for farm mechanization in the West Bengal state of India. Since the majority of farms are marginal with land holding less than one hectare, use of high capacity equipment is not feasible. The major constraints in the promotion of farm mechanization include the fragmented land holding, low investment capacity of the farmers, the requirement of equipment for each agro-climatic zone of West Bengal, inadequate repairs and maintenance facilities etc. So, small agricultural machinery is gaining importance for research. The cultivator is a secondary tillage tool mostly used in Indian farms. A 5-tyne cultivator may be suitable for small farm lands. So, in this present work, a 5-tyne cultivator was designed...

Early Trends, Current Status and Future Prospects of Farm Mechanization in Asia CIGR Journal
Rehman, Tanzeel; Khan, Muhammad Usman.
During the last five decades Asia has made considerable development in the field of agricultural machinery. During the year 1960 the condition of mechanization was very poor and most of the farm operations were performed manually. A positive correlation between the farm power availability and the productivity was observed during past 3 decades for several Asian nations including China, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The previous trends have shown that the Pakistan, India and Bangladesh have experienced only the selective farm mechanization which was found to be initially limited to the use of heavy tractors only. In addition to the full-scale tractors, China, India and Bangladesh have adopted the power tillers and small-scale tractors to co-op with the...

Analysis of human energy expenditure in harvesting sugar palm (Arenga Pinnata Merr) in Malaysia CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius; Yusof, Zakiah binti.
Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr) is an indigenous plant in Malaysia, which has a great potential to be expanded into large scale plantation crop for the production of sugar and other sugar-based products. Until today, harvesting of sugar palm tree is a laborious operation, without application of any mechanization systems. It takes the largest demand for labor and time spent in the sugar palm cultivation. The main objective of the study was to investigate human energy expenditure in harvesting sugar palm in Malaysia. Workers’ workload and productivity in harvesting sugar palm were also analyzed. Relevant physical properties of sugar palm tree, heart rate, and human energy expenditure and worker productivity as well as in harvesting sugar palm were recorded...

Emergence of corn according to the sowing depth of the seed and loads on press wheels REA
Neto,Pedro H. Weirich; Lopes,Angelo R. C..
The seeding process was the operation that suffered the most changes in no-tillage system due the cover crop soil and new particle soil arrangement. The objective of this study was to verify the effects of loads applied to the wheels and adjustments of sowing depth on seedling emergence of corn in no-tillage system. The experimental design was completely randomized with a factorial arrangement 5x4, with five loads applied to the wheels and four theoretical sowing depth adjustments. The real sowing depth increased in the lower theoretical depth and decreased in the higher theoretical depth, due to the compaction loads. Regarding the time of emergence, loads applied had not influence at the greater depths. Emergence time decreased with the load increase in...

Immigrant Workers and Technological Change in U.S. Agriculture: A Profit Maximization Approach of Induced Innovation AgEcon
Napasintuwong, Orachos; Emerson, Robert D..
This paper analyzes changes in U.S. agricultural technology during 1960-1999, emphasizing the role of immigrant workers on farm mechanization. The rates and directions of biased technological change based on the induced innovation theory are compared before and after the passage of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 which was intended to reduce employment of unauthorized workers. Unlike previous studies of induced innovation, this paper develops a new theoretical and empirical model of induced innovation using a profit maximization approach. The contribution of the profit maximization approach is that it allows changes in output combinations as a result of technological change. We found that the technology was biased against hired and...
