Environmental impact of organic agriculture in temperate regions Organic Eprints
Lynch, D.H.; Halberg, N.; Bhatta, G.D..
Can organic agriculture elaborate a scientifically based, resource-efficien and agroecological approach to low-input farm management? This review examines the literature from temperate regions, with a particular emphasison Canadian and USstudies that relate to environmental and ecological impacts of organic agriculture with respect to (i )soil organic matter storage, (ii) soil quality/soil health, (iii) nutrient loading and risks of off-farm nutrient and agrochemical losses, (iv) biodiversity and (v) energy use and global warming potential. The context and implications of semi-arid conditions and low soil P levels, common to many organic farms in North America, and wide spread adoption of genetically engineered crops in conventional production, is also...

Conversion to Organic Production Software (OrgPlan, OF0159) Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
This is the final report for Defra Project OF0159. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. This involves an assessment of the current situation of the farm, based on which proposals for an organic 'target (endpoint)' can be developed. This includes proposed rotation(s), cropping and stocking plan for the specific farm situation and the proposals need to be tested for their technical and financial feasibility, including impact on forage supply, nutrient requirements and financial...

Minder en Anders Bemesten. Onderzoeksresultaten tuinbouw op klei. Rozendaal, courgette 2009 Organic Eprints
Timmermans, Bart G.H.; Burgt, Geert-Jan H.M.; Staps, J.J.M.; Berg, Coen.

Nitrogen and Energy Utilization on Conventional and Organic Dairy Farms in Norway Organic Eprints
Koesling, Matthias.
To improve environmental sustainability it is important that all sectors in a society contribute to improving the utilization of inputs as energy and nutrients. In Norway, dairy farming contributes with an important share to the added value from the agricultural sector, although there is little information available about utilization of energy and nitrogen (N). Many results on sustainability have been published on dairy farming. However, due to Norway’s Nordic climatic conditions, mountainous and rugged topography and an agricultural policy that can design its own prices and subsidies, results from other countries are hardly representative for Norwegian conditions. To bridge this gap, the objective of this study was to analyse if the utilisation of...

The development of organic milk production systems Organic Eprints
Weller, R.
The main objective of the 4-year project was to provide both qualitative and quantitative information on the development of two contrasting organic dairy systems, including the benefits and limitations of each system and also the opportunities for improving the systems. The first system (SS system) was based on an extensive and sustainable system, with the objective of achieving a high level of self sufficiency and sustainability by minimising the importation of nutrients into the system. Therefore, the cropping rotation for the system included forage crops for grazing and conservation and also cereal crops to provide both grain (for feeding as a concentrate) and straw for bedding. The main objective of the second system (PC system) was to change from a...

Commercial organic fertiliser as supplementary fertilisers in potato crop production Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Weidmann, Gilles; Siegrist, Franziska.
The nitrogen requirement varies depending on variety and usage. The conventional fertilisation amounts to 120 kg of N per ha in table potatoes and potatoes for processing. Early potatoes and seed potatoes require slightly less nitrogen at about 100 kg of N per ha. The nitrogen supply strongly depends on the conditions for N mineralisation (weather, humus content of the soil, preceding crop residues). Thus, optimising the N supply is complex. Nitrogen from the preceding crop: Grain legumes or cereals in combination with green manure are favourable preceding crops. Field peas may leave behind up to 50 kg net weight of available nitrogen, a mixture of grain legumes and barley up to 30 kg. Depending on the preceding crop and the soil, the nitrogen left...

Phosphorus Management on ‘Extensive' Organic Farms with Infertile Soils Organic Eprints
Cornish, P. S..
Two case-study farms with negative P balances maintained acceptable productivity without fertilisers, apparently by ‘mining’ ‘available’ P reserves in surface and subsoil. The question for these organic farms is ‘how long before fertiliser is needed?’ With six farms on lower-fertility, weakly acidic to alkaline soils and modest rainfall (380-580 mm/yr), low productivity was related to P deficiency despite positive P balances from using allowable fertilisers. Useful supplies of compost or manure were unavailable. Until effective allowable fertilisers or microbial inoculants have been developed, there is a case for using soluble forms of P fertiliser on soils where soil-solution P is low and soil P-sorption is high, so that additions of soluble P ‘feed...

Zombardo, A.; Puccioni, S.; Perria, R.; Leprini, M.; Priori, S.; Costantini, E.A.C.; Storchi, Paolo.
In Italian vineyards it is common to find more or less extended areas with chemico-physical or biological soil deficiencies and problems in plant vigor and grape production. A reduced agronomic functionality is caused by wrong soil managements and improper land preparation before vine plantations. A strong land transformation alters, in fact, the existing natural balance, causing loss of organic matter and nutrients, erosions, reduction of available water and metal accumulation. This phenomenon affects the growth of vines and the grape yields. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect of degraded soils on the vineyards of two Tuscan vine-growing regions (Chianti Classico and Maremma Toscana). In two farms, we have identified respectively...

PlantyOrganic: Results 2013 Organic Eprints
Hospers-Brands, A.J.T.M.; Anema, D.; Bus, M.C..
2013 was the second year of the "PlantyOrganic" system development in practice. The six-year rotation is laid out and measurements took place at soil and crop. With the exception of the potatoes in 2013 all crops had the pre-crop as foreseen in the design. The fertilizers used were completely produced in the own system, as foreseen in the system design. The amounts of nitrogen applied were about 45 % higher than in the design. Soil nitrogen is measured and used as input in the nitrogen model NDICEA. There was a sufficient match between measured and calculated level of soil mineral nitrogen. The crops performed well, with a high yield in carrots and oats, and a disappointing yield in wheat. In wheat nitrogen was limiting for the yield, we do not yet have a...

Waste materials from biogas production - effects on soil fertility and climate Organic Eprints
Johansen , Anders; Carter, Mette S.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Future agricultureal systems will produce bioenergy on basis of on- and off-farm crops and residues, implying beneficial recycling of plant nutrients back to soil and plants. This will reduce emission of climate gases and may also reduce spread of weed seeds, parasites and pathogens. However, it may also induce long-term reduction in soil organic pools.

Upward N redistribution - Postharvest effect of cover crops on creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense) Organic Eprints
Phan, Hong TT; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The study aimed to uncover the mechanism of how cover crops versus autumn tillage influences the competition of succeeding barley crop and thistle. By the difference in their effects on the N distribution, this gave barley or thistle an advantage to uptake more soil N than the other during the growing season of barley.
