Fluid seepage in relation to seabed deformation on the central Nile Deep-Sea Fan, part 2: evidence from multibeam and sidescan imagery ArchiMer

On the central Nile deep-sea fan, stratified sediments overlying mass-transport deposits (MTDs) are deformed into slope-parallel seabed undulations associated with fluid seepage. The western part of this system, in water depths of 1,950–2,250 m, is examined using multi-frequency data from hull-mounted and deep-towed swath/profiling systems. Sub-bottom profiles show sub-vertical fluid pipes that terminate both at and below seabed, and gas signatures along fault planes bounding the undulations. Fluid seepage is recorded by high- to intermediate-backscatter patches (HBPs, IBPs) that differ in appearance on multibeam imagery (30 kHz, ≤3 m penetration) and sidescan swaths (170/190 kHz, <0.1 m penetration). Comparison of the two suggests a distinction of (a)...

Geological sampling in deep water: A new instrument is necessary. ArchiMer
Girardeau, J; Auzende, Jean-marie; Boillot, G.
The Nautile submersible is used to observe the underwater geological structures and to conduct geological sampling in deep water. But it is not sufficient because it is not possible to measure the faults in the oceanic rifts.

Neotectonics in Marajó Island, State of Pará (Brazil) revealed by vertical electric sounding integrated with remote sensing and geological data Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,LENA S.B.; ROSSETTI,DILCE F.; ELIAS,VAGNER R.; PRADO,RENATO L..
Studies suggest that the Marajó Island has experienced neotectonic activity during its latest evolution. However, there are no data demonstrating the presence of tectonic structures in its shallow subsurface. This work integrates vertical electric sounding, morphostructural lineaments, and geological data aiming to show fault control on the Late Pleistocene-Holocene sedimentation of this area. Resistivity values were related to mud (< 90 Ωm), clayey sand (90 and 200 Ωm), sand (200 and 500 Ωm), as well as Fe-bearing sand and laterite (> 500 Ωm). The latest values were related to the unconformity with lateritic paleosol at the top of the Barreiras Formation. Despite the values ≤ 500 Ωm of both the Barreiras Formation and the Late Pleistocene-Holocene...
