The effects of copaiba essential oil on growth performance and yield of slaughtered broilers were evaluated. Four hundred and fifty broiler chicks were distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments, and six replicates of 15 broiler chicks. Treatments comprised Control (commercial promoter) and four levels of copaiba essential oil, or rather, 0.15 (0.15EO); 0.30 (0.30EO); 0.45 (0.45EO) and 0.60 mL (0.60EO) kg-1 feed. The 21-day-old broilers fed on growth promoter had a greater body weight than that of birds fed on treatments with inclusion 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 mL of essential oil (p < 0.05). Aged 40 days, only the broilers fed on treatment with high level of inclusion of essential oil showed lower body weight when compared with...

Oliveira, Luiz Alberto Garcia de; Universidade Federal de Goias; Nunes, Romão da Cunha; Universidade Federal de Goias; Rufino, Luciana Moura; Universidade Federal de Goias; Roner, Márcia Nunes Bandeira; Universidade Federal de Sergipe; Stringhini, José Henrique; Universidade Federal de Goias; Di Castro, Izabela Cruvinel; Universidade Federal de Goias.
The present study assessed the effect of adding water and phytase to middling diets on digestibility, metabolism, performance, carcass characteristics, and the bone mineralization of growing and finishing pigs. For the digestibility trial, 16 pigs were distributed in randomized blocks, placed in digestibility cages following a 2 x 2 factorial design (dry and wet diets, with and without phytase). For the performance trial, 48 piglets were distributed into a complete randomized design. During the growing period, wet diets presented higher values for digestibility and energy metabolism. In the finishing stage, the addition of water to the feed caused a greater weight gain and interfered with the carcass length. The balance of the mineral matter and the...

Milk production and economic assessment of cassava bagasse in the feed of dairy cows Animal Sciences
Lima, Leandro Pereira; Veloso, Cristina Mattos; Silva, Fabiano Ferreira da; Pires, Aureliano José Vieira; Teixeira, Fábio Andrade; Nascimento, Paulo Válter Nunes.
The addition of 0; 5; 10 and 15% cassava bagasse, based on the dry matter of the total diet of crossbred Holstein v. Zebu cows, was evaluated on milk production and composition and on the impacts of diet costs. The animals, weighing an average of 478.5 kg, were in the middle third lactation period. Diet with 15% cassava bagasse provided a 13.2% increase in production when compared to control. Feed conversion had a quadratic effect with minimum point at 4.2% of cassava bagasse inclusion. Crude protein, the only milk component that changed, increased linearly with the inclusion of cassava bagasse levels. Treatment with 15% cassava bagasse caused a more effective operational cost (42.8% higher when compared to control) and the highest leveling point for milk...

Genetic parameters for performance and carcass traits in a paternal 1 lineage of broiler Anais da ABC (AABC)
CRUZ,VALDECY A.R.; GRUPIONI,NATALIA V.; MENDONÇA,GABRIELA G.; VENTURINI,GUILHERME C.; LEDUR,MONICA C.; PEIXOTO,JANE O.; MUNARI,DANISIO P..
Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate variance components for performance and carcass traits in a paternal broiler line. The (co)variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method applied to the animal model, including the fixed effect of group (sex and hatch) and additive genetic and residual as random effects. Estimated heritability for performance traits ranged from 0.09 to 0.42. The genetic correlations between traits ranged from -0.50 to 0.97. The heritability estimates of feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion from 35 to 41 days of age were of low magnitude. The genetic correlations among them were favorable to genetic selection. These results suggest that moderate genetic gain can be obtained to the...

The effect of stocking density on the growth of apple snails native Pomacea bridgesii and exotic Pomacea lineata (Mollusca, Gastropoda) Anais da ABC (AABC)
JUNIOR,ESMAR SOUZA; BARROS,JOSE CARLOS N. DE; PARESQUE,KARLA; FREITAS,RODRIGO R. DE.
The demand for alternative food sources is currently in evidence in the world and, therefore, the culture of animal species considered not conventional makes this theme relevant and appropriate. In the present study, the species Pomacea lineata and Pomacea bridgesii, each with three stowage densities (0.5 [T1], 1 [T2], and 1.5 [T3] animal/L), were tested. They were analyzed regarding growth rate, weight gain, final biomass, feed conversion and percentage of survival. There was not any statistically significant difference between the different densities for both species. The final average weight in the three waterworks did not differ significantly in P. bridgesii. In P. lineata, T1 (22.3 ± 1.80g) was significantly higher than T2 and T3. On the other hand,...

Effects of varying levels of distillers dried grains with solubles on growth performance of broiler chicks Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Loar II,RE; Corzo,A.
There is no formal recommendation, regarding dietary concentration, when it comes to feeding distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to young broilers. This study evaluated the effects of varying levels of DDGS in a diet to young broilers from 0 to 14d of age. Diets ranged from 0 to 32% DDGS concentration, with 8% increments. Increasing inclusion rate of DDGS led to decreased body weight gain (BWG), whereas mortality seemed to be linearly increased. However, there was an increase seen in feed conversion (FCR) in conjunction with the increase in DDGS in the diet. An inclusion level of 8% DDGS or less is recommended for starter diets for broiler chicks.
