ABSTRACT The main goal of modern intensive fish farms should be to increase productivity at a low cost. The automation of fish feeding plays an important role in this scenario since it may improve feed efficiency and reduce organic waste emissions. The aim of this experiment was to provide basic information for the development of feeding techniques using automatic feeders. The experiment was done from September to December, with tilapia weighing 185g, fed 48 meals a day at 22 or 30 minute intervals, with feeding rates of 2, 3 and 4% of live weight. Eighteen 1m3 net cages equipped with automatic feeders were distributed in one pond. During the experimental trial the mean values for dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature were 3.20mg/l, 8.03 and 25.43°C,...

Su,Jun-Ling; Shi,Bin-Lin; Zhang,Peng-Fei; Sun,Deng-Sheng; Li,Ti-Yu; Yan,Su-Mei.
Effects of yucca extract (YE) on feed efficiency, immune and antioxidative function in Arbor Acres broilers were studied. One hundred and twenty-eight fourteen-day-old broiler chickens were randomly divided into four treatments with four replicates of 8 birds each. These four diets were formulated by adding 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg YE to the basal diet. The results showed that: diets supplemented with 100 and 200 mg/kg YE increased average body weight gain, feed efficiency, IgG, IgM, T-AOC, CAT and SOD levels, and have positive effects on inducing immune organs' maturation. In addition, 100 mg treatment mainly improved the feed efficiency whereas 200 mg treatment mainly acted on immunity and anti-oxidation. In conclusion, YE can be used as a feed additive...

Genetic analysis of residual feed intake adjusted for fat and carcass and performance traits in a Nellore herd Ciência Rural
Moraes,Giovanna Faria de; Abreu,Luiza Rodrigues Alves; Ferreira,Isabel Cristina; Pereira,Idalmo Garcia.
ABSTRACT: The study of the genetic evaluation of residual feed intake adjusted for fat (RFIFat) is important for the appropriate use of feed efficiency in selection programs. The objective was to analyze the influence of selection for RFIF at on carcass and performance traits by estimating various genetic parameters. Data were analyzed from five tests of feed efficiency, which were conducted with 677 Nellore males. Genetic evaluation was performed by Bayesian inference using an animal model via single- and two-trait analyses. Variables analyzed were dry matter intake, average daily gain, RFIFat, rib eye area, back fat thickness, rump fat thickness, marbling score, and subcutaneous fat thickness. The posterior mean distributions estimated at each analysis...

Can individual feed conversion ratio at commercial size be predicted from juvenile performance in individually reared Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus? ArchiMer
Rodde, Charles; Chatain, Beatrice; Vandeputte, Marc; Quoc Trinh, Trong; Benzie, John A.h.; De Verdal, Hugues.
Feed conversion ratio (FCR), the ratio between feed intake and body weight gain, is of major interest for improving aquaculture sustainability through reduced feed costs and environmental impacts. Demonstrating whether FCR measured in juvenile fish is an accurate predictor of their performance during the whole rearing period is critical to developing genetic improvement programs for this trait. This is especially true for estimates obtained in individually reared fish, for which this has high implications regarding the size of the necessary rearing structures. We obtained individual FCR from 30 male Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus from the GIFT strain individually reared in a recirculating system, from 36 to 260 g mean weight. They were fed twice a day...

Population, Temperature and Feeding Rate Effects on Individual Feed Efficiency in European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Rodde, Charles; Vandeputte, Marc; Allal, Francois; Besson, Mathieu; Clota, Frederic; Vergnet, Alain; Benzie, John A. H.; De Verdal, Hugues.
Using breeding programs to improve feed efficiency, the ratio between fish body weight gain (BWG) and feed intake (FI), could increase aquaculture sustainability through reduced feed costs and environmental impact. To this end, individual phenotypic information is required. Individual FI can be measured by isolating each fish. Under these conditions, restricting the feeding rate has proved relevant to improve feed efficiency indirectly by selecting faster-growing animals. Moreover, a restricted feeding rate reduces the work load of collecting uneaten pellets after each meal. The approach assumes the most efficient fish at high and low feeding rates are the same, but this assumption remains untested. In European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), feed...

Feed intake, molt frequency, tissue growth, feed efficiency and energy budget during a molt cycle of mud crab juveniles, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), fed on different practical diets with graded levels of soy protein concentrate as main source of protein ArchiMer
Nguyen, Ngoc Thi Bich; Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Wantiez, Laurent.
There has been growing interest in the development of mud crab aquaculture in New Caledonia. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. For this purpose, 54 individually housed crabs were allocated to five dietary treatments (n = 10 or 11). The crabs were fed ad libitum, for 81 days with the allocated diets. The apparent digestibilities of dry mater, crude protein and energy were high (96.2-97.3%),...

Agonistic behaviour and feed efficiency in juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; O'Connell, Catherine Maeve; Mekkawy, Wagdy; Vandeputte, Marc; Chatain, Beatrice; Bégout, Marie-laure; Benzie, John A.h..
Given the strong effects of behavioural hierarchies on growth in many cultured species and the key role of feed efficiency in aquaculture economics, understanding the nature of the interaction of these variables is important for the sustainability of aquaculture. The relationship between agonistic behaviour, growth and feed efficiency in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was studied by rearing 120 fish in eight aquaria. Fish were video-recorded to estimate the occurrence of agonistic behaviour during a fasting and a refeeding period. Growth, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency (FCE - calculated as the inverse of feed conversion ratio (FCR)) were subsequently measured individually for each fish. Fish showed 58% less agonistic traits during the...

In order to evaluate the effect and consequence of lateral system inactivation on fish nocturnal feeding, the differential growth of groups of European sea bass maintained in different rearing conditions were compared. Whereas some fish with intact lateral system (placebo fish) were placed under a photoperiod of 12-L: 12-D, other placebo fish were kept in the dark. In the same way, fish deprived of lateral system by section of their lateral system nerves and antibiotic treatment were placed under a photoperiod of 12-L: 12-D and the others in the dark. For each of these four rearing conditions, two sets of experiment were realized. Percent mortality, feed rhythm, averaged daily feed demand, specific growth rate and feed efficiency were compared among these...

Environmental impacts of genetic improvement of growth rate and feed conversion ratio in fish farming under rearing density and nitrogen output limitations ArchiMer
Besson, M.; Aubin, J.; Komen, H.; Poelman, M.; Quillet, E.; Vandeputte, Marc; Van Arendonk, J. A. M.; De Boer, I. J. M..
Today, fish farming faces an increasing demand in fish products, but also various environmental challenges. Genetic improvement in growth rate and feed conversion ratio is known to be an efficient way to increase production and increase efficiency in fish farming. The environmental consequences of genetic improvement in growth rate and feed conversion ratio, however, are unknown. In this study, we investigated the environmental consequences of genetic improvement in growth rate and feed conversion ratio in an African catfish farm, using Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). In RAS, total fish production of the farm is limited by rearing density or by the capacity to treat dissolved nitrogen. To evaluate the environmental consequences of genetic...

A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

In search for indirect criteria to improve residual feed intake in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Part I: Phenotypic relationship between residual feed intake and body weight variations during feed deprivation and re-feeding periods ArchiMer
Grima, Laure; Vandeputte, Marc; Ruelle, Francois; Vergnet, Alain; Mambrini, Muriel; Chatain, Beatrice.
No commercial breeding programs have yet started to improve feed utilization efficiency in fish, mainly because of the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake in fish reared in groups. Our general goal is to propose indirect criteria to be used for breeding of commercial lines. In a previous study undertaken with rainbow trout clones, a genetic correlation was detected between residual feed intake (RFI), and body weight variation during successive periods of feed deprivation (FD) and re-feeding (RF). To assess the pertinence of such indirect criteria for future breeding programs, we set up a large experiment using sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax), a recently domesticated species with broad genetic diversity. The objectives of the present...

Effects of temperature on the growth of pollack (Pollachius pollachius) juveniles ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Buchet, Vincent; Vincent, Benoit; Le Delliou, Herve; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of juvenile pollack was assessed at five constant temperatures (9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 degrees C) in an 84-day trial. Duplicate groups of 75 fish (initial weight 143 +/- 2 g) were held in O-2 saturated water (102-103% saturation) and fed to apparent satiation. Growth increased as temperature increased from 9 degrees C up to a plateau at 12-15 degrees C (NS differences between 12 and 15 degrees C) followed by a decrease from 18 degrees C. No growth occurred at 21 degrees C. For the overall period, specific growth rates were 0.52% and 0.53% day(-1) at 12 and 15 degrees C compared to 0.40% day(-1) at 18 degrees C. Feed intake was maximum at 15-18 degrees C (0.68-0.69% day(-1)) and it was significantly lower at 21 degrees C (0.45% day(-1)). Apparent feed...

Estimation of genetic parameters of feed conversion ratio based on individual phenotypes and genomic data in sea bass ArchiMer
Besson, Mathieu; Allal, Francois; Chatain, Beatrice; Vergnet, Alain; Clota, Frederic; Ferrari, Sebastien; Vandeputte, Marc.
We estimated genetic parameters of feed conversion ratio (FCR) and daily growth coefficient (DGC) using individual phenotypes measured in aquariums under a restricted feeding regime and genomic information on 2,722 SNP markers. The results showed a moderate heritability of both traits (0.26 for FCR and 0.41 for DGC) as well as close to unity negative genetic correlation between them. Thus, FCR of fish in aquariums could be improved by selecting fish for higher DGC. Nevertheless, these results must be taken with caution until we know whether individual FCR measured in aquariums also reflects the FCR of fish reared in groups.

Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Effect of selection for fasting tolerance on feed intake, growth and feed efficiency in the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Daule, Sophie; Vandeputte, Marc; Vergnet, Alain; Guinand, Bruno; Grima, Laure; Chatain, Beatrice.
Feed efficiency is a major goal for aquaculture sustainability, and selecting fish to genetically enhance this trait would be highly valuable. However, no selective breeding program specifically targeted to feed efficiency exists for farmed fish, mostly because of the difficulty of measuring individual feed intake. However, a negative phenotypic correlation between feed efficiency and weight loss at fasting has been previously demonstrated in sea bass submitted to feed deprivation (FD). We mated sea bass parents selected for their high (FD+) or low (FD-) weight loss at fasting to produce FD+ and FD- progeny, which were reared in a single tank to avoid common environmental effects. At 8 months of age, 1200 of those fish were submitted to three alternating...
