Reference diet for crustaceans: Principle of experimentation. ArchiMer
Castell, J.
Feeding trials were conducted with over 22 different crustacean species to compare the potential use of two diets as Standard Reference Diets (SRD) in crustacean research. The two diets (BML 81 S, a casein/albumin based formula developed at the University of California, Bodega Marine Laboratory, and HFX CRD 84, a crab protein concentrate based diet formulated at the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans Halifax Laboratory) were about equal in performance for most species tested. Though neither diet was an ideal SRD, the HFX CRD 84 formulation based upon a purified protein of marine origin was accepted as the interim SRD for use in aquatic crustacean studies.

Efecto del tipo del alimento y las densidades en el crecimiento y la supervivencia en postlarvas de Langosta Espinosa (Panulirus argus) OceanDocs
Blanco, W.; Fraga, I.; Tizol, R.; Artiles, M.A..
Two experiments were accomplished with wild P. argus lobster postlarvae collected from the sea in pelagic collectors. In the first one, the effect of two foods (live and frozen Artemia) was tested on 0.17 g lobsters in a 40 days feeding trial. Significant differences were found (p<0.05) between the final weight, survival, weight increment, molting rate and NBI, the highest values were for live Artemia with the highest survival (93%). Mortalities using frozen Artemia were almost entirely attributable to cannibalism of postmoult lobsters. In the second experiment, the average initial weight was 0.26 g during 120 days and three densities (50, 70, 90 n/m2) were tested, the feeding regimes were live Artemia and pellet during 60 days the rest of time with...

Galindo, J.; Fraga, I.; Artiles, M.A.; de Arazoza, M.; Alvarez, J.S.; Pelegrín, E..
To assess the effect of protein levels in diet on growth of pink shrimp juveniles (Farfantepenaeus notialis), two completely randomly experimental designs were carried out, one at laboratory scale during 8 weeks and the second one in fertilized earthen ponds during 20 weeks. Samples of pink shrimps obtained after spawning in the laboratory, were used. Isocaloric practical diets containing 35, 40 and 45% were used in the first experiment and 40 and 45% protein in the second one. In both trials, shrimps fed with 45% protein diet reached the highest growths. The nutritional factors assessed were always better in that organisms fed with the diet of higher protein content. The histological analysis of the hepatopancreas in shrimp feds with diets containing...

Manipulated yeast diets as a partial algal substitute for the nursery culture of the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria OMA
Coutteau, P.; Hadley, N.H.; Manzi, J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Rearing bivalve molluscs in commercial hatchery and nursery systems has so far relied on the production of live algae, which is costly and often unpredictable. Therefore the development of satisfactory artificial diet would greatly reduce the operating costs of bivalve operations. The development of techniques to improve the nutritional composition and digestibility of yeasts resulted in a product with great potential as a substitute for unicellular algae. Previous work on the Manila clam Tapes semidecussata showed that replacing 80% of the algae by these manipulated yeasts resulted in growth rates of 64 to 93% in comparison with the growth rate obtained for the algal control. In the present study a standard culture test for evaluating...

Performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii broodstock fed diets with different fatty acid composition OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) on the reproductive performance and offspring quality of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii was evaluated in a 180-day trial. Three isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets containing different levels of fatty acids, high 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA concentrations, high 18:2n-6 and low n-3 HUFA, and low 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA, were fed ad libitum to three groups of six females. Fecundity was improved by the addition of higher amounts of 18:2n-6 (from 3 to 13 mg g-1 DW). As a consequence of higher fecundity, smaller eggs were obtained most likely because the number of oocytes competing for a limited amount of yolk was higher. The...
