To assess the effect of protein levels in diet on growth of pink shrimp juveniles (Farfantepenaeus notialis), two completely randomly experimental designs were carried out, one at laboratory scale during 8 weeks and the second one in fertilized earthen ponds during 20 weeks. Samples of pink shrimps obtained after spawning in the laboratory, were used. Isocaloric practical diets containing 35, 40 and 45% were used in the first experiment and 40 and 45% protein in the second one. In both trials, shrimps fed with 45% protein diet reached the highest growths. The nutritional factors assessed were always better in that organisms fed with the diet of higher protein content. The histological analysis of the hepatopancreas in shrimp feds with diets containing... |

The effect of diets with different protein levels on the growth of pink shrimp juveniles Penaeus notialis under laboratory conditions was studied. Animals with initial average weight of 0.4 g were fed during 56 days using four isocaloric (350 kcal/100 g) and isolipidic (8.7 %) balanced diets, containing 30, 35, 40 and 45 % of protein. Shrimp fed with the diet containing 45 % of protein reached the highest growth and the best values for nutritional indixes under evaluation. The protein efficiency tended to increase when the protein level in food also increased. A significant relationship was verified between shrimp weight and in vitro digestibility of diets. No relationship was detected between enzimatic activity of trypsin and general proteases for the... |

To evaluate the effect of Spirulina platensis inclusion in microdiets for white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti larvae, a completely randomized experimental design was developed with 4 treatments and three replicates. Diets with 3 inclusion levels (0, 2.5 and 5%) were prepared. A control was fed Artemia nauplii. Larvae were fed for 120 hours from mysis I to postlavae 1 every 4 h, and water quality parameters were measured daily. At the end of the experiment survival was determined, and the development index of the larvae was calculated. The chemical score of the diet was also determined, using the L. schmitti postlarvae amino-acid pattern as reference. Triptophan and hystidine were the first and second limiting amino acids in the diets. Survival was around 80%... |

Two experiments were accomplished with wild P. argus lobster postlarvae collected from the sea in pelagic collectors. In the first one, the effect of two foods (live and frozen Artemia) was tested on 0.17 g lobsters in a 40 days feeding trial. Significant differences were found (p<0.05) between the final weight, survival, weight increment, molting rate and NBI, the highest values were for live Artemia with the highest survival (93%). Mortalities using frozen Artemia were almost entirely attributable to cannibalism of postmoult lobsters. In the second experiment, the average initial weight was 0.26 g during 120 days and three densities (50, 70, 90 n/m2) were tested, the feeding regimes were live Artemia and pellet during 60 days the rest of time with... |

Two <i>Artemia</i> species (<i>Artemia franciscana</i>, GSL strain and a population from <i>Artemia sinica</i>, ARC No. 1188) were enriched with two different emulsions containing high levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (23 and 44% of total fatty acids, respectively) in filtered seawater (30 ppt) at 28°C. After enrichment nauplii were starved for 72h at three different temperatures (6.1, 12.2 and 22°C). Following enrichment the DHA content and DHA/EPA ratio reached a maximum 41.2 and 42.8 mg g-1 dry weight and 1.88 and 2.09 in <i>A. franciscana</i> and <i>A. sinica</i>, respectively. During starvation at 12.2°C the DHA content in <i>A. franciscana</i>... |

Few shrimp hatcheries successfully propagate captive broodstock on a commercial scale. Diets for acceptable maturation performance of <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> have typically relied on the inclusion of marine polychaetes (bloodworm) from Panama or Maine, USA, which are expensive and are of unpredictable supply. Studies were therefore undertaken at experimental and commercial scale to replace or supplement the polychaetes by frozen ongrown <i>Artemia</i> which were either non-enriched or bioencapsulated with specific boosters. In experiment 1 the control diet consisted of frozen squid only and was evaluated against broodstock diets where 60% of the squid was substituted by bloodworm or enriched <i>Artemia</i> biomass.... |
