Feeding association between benthic and nektonic Neotropical stream fishes Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Carvalho,Fernando Rogério.
Following behaviour among Neotropical stream fishes have been scarcely reported. This type of feeding association was observed in a small stream in the upper rio Paraná system between the catfish, Aspidoras fuscoguttatus, acting as a nuclear species, and Knodus moenkhausii, Poecilia reticulata, and Astyanax altiparanae as follower species. Aspidoras fuscoguttatus individuals dug in the bottom during feeding, causing sediment suspension. Their followers picked food items in the "cloud" of suspended particles. Food items of sediment are no longer consumed by the catfish when in suspension, but are still available for K. moenkhausii, P. reticulata and A. altiparanae. Following behaviour is an alternative feeding tactic for these species, which reinforces the...

Morphological patterns of fish and their relationships with reservoirs hydrodynamics BABT
Cunico,Almir Manoel; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
The aim of this study was to determine morphological patterns of the most abundant fish species found in reservoirs with different hydraulic retention times and stages of colonization, considering habitat strata and feeding strategies. Samplings were carried out in six Paraná State (Brazil) reservoirs, and morphological data were obtained from 15 individuals of 17 fish species. Ecomorphological attributes that best segregated species, were selected using Discriminant Analysis. These selected attributes were later used in a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Differences among reservoirs concerning occupation of the ecomorphological space were tested through analysis of variance (null models). The six reservoirs differed in the occupation of the fish...

Simulating the effect of climate on star grass growth and quality and its capacity to support milk production in the tropical regions of Mexico Ciência Rural
Angel,Gilberto Yong; Silveira,Vicente Celestino Pires; Nova,Francisca Avilés; Ortega,Octavio Alonso Castelán.
The objective of the present study was to simulate the effect of the seasonal variation of climate on the nutritional value and dry matter yield of star grass and its capacity to support milk production alone or with concentrate supplementation in small-scale milk production systems in the tropical regions of Mexico. Two mathematical simulation models were used, the first model simulates the growth and yield of star grass (Cynodon plectostachyus), and the second model simulates the productive performance of dairy cows. Both models were integrated in a decision-making support system (DSSTROP). Model's predictions were validated by a calibration exercise for each data set from three experiments on the effect of concentrate supplementation on milk yield. The...
