Genetic variability of Herpailurus yagouaroundi, Puma concolor and Panthera onca (Mammalia, Felidae) studied using Felis catus microsatellites Genet. Mol. Biol.
Moreno,Vanessa Roma; Grisolia,Alexéia Barufatti; Campagnari,Francine; Milazzotto,Marcela; Adania,Cristina Harumi; Garcia,José Fernando; Souza,Edislane Barreiros de.
We used four microsatellite loci (Fca08, Fca45, Fca77 and Fca96) from the domestic cat, Felis catus, to investigate genetic variability in specimens of Herpailurus yagouaroundi (jaguarundi, otter cat, eyra), Puma concolor (cougar, mountain lion, puma) and Panthera onca (jaguar) held in various Brazilian zoos. Samples of DNA from the cats were PCR amplified and then sequenced before being analyzed using the CERVUS program. Our results show a mean polymorphic information content (PIC) of 0.83 for H. yagouaroundi, 0.66 for P. concolor and 0.69 for P. onca and a mean of 10.3 alleles for the Fca08 locus, 5.3 for Fca 45, 9 for Fca 77 and 14 for Fca 96. These results indicate a relatively high level of genetic diversity for the specimens studied.

Increasing levels of zeolite and Yucca schidigera in diets for adult cats R. Bras. Zootec.
Roque,Natália Charleaux; Saad,Flávia Maria de Oliveira Borges; Santos,João Paulo Fernandes dos; Ebina,Fernanda Sayuri; Chizzotti,Ana Flávia; Silva,Rosana Claudio; Aquino,Adriana Augusto; Maia,Gustavo Vaz Corrêa.
The effect of the additives Yucca schidigera (YSC) and zeolite (clinoptilolite) on digestibility, fecal texture and odor, blood parameters and urine pH of domesticated felines was evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with twenty-one cats, in two periods, distributed in seven treatments: moist commercial feed (control); control + 125, 250 and 375 ppm YSC; and control + 0.5; 0.75 and 1.0 % zeolite. No differences were observed between the diets regarding apparent digestibility coefficients of nutrient, energy, urine pH or blood parameters. However, levels of 0.5 and 0.75% zeolite were effective both in reducing odor (R² = 96.39) and for fecal texture (R² = 99.63), showing a quadratic pattern for these variables. Levels of 125...

The population control of dogs and cats is a public healthconcern. This report describes the activities of the AcademicExtension of the College of Agricultural and VeterinarySciences of UNESP in Jaboticabal/SP - Brazil aimed at surgicalsterilization of stray dogs and cats, with social actionsrelated to teaching and research. In 2007, the first yearof the project, 129 pets were sterilized, whereas in 2014,between January and October, 1538 animals were sterilized, which shows the increase in program acceptance by thelocal community. All the activities carried out contributedtowards the academic and professional training of studentsof the extension project, as well as residents participating inthe program. It can be concluded that the development ofsurgical...

Epidemiological aspects and the main pathologies of a feline patients (Felis catus) treated at the veterinary hospital of the University of Marília from 2007 to 2009 MV&Z
São Germano, Giorgina Graciela Rosolem; Arruda, Vanessa Aparecida; Manhoso, Fábio Fernando Ribeiro.
The cat is becoming the most popular pet, especially due to people’s actual life style. This specie possesses peculiarities and requires different maintenance conditions, besides presents different clinical characteristics from other animals. Thus, a feline epidemiologic profile was traced using the medical records from the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Marília, in the period of 2007 to 2009. It was observed that out of the pets attended for, 8.62% were felines, of which 52.47% were female and 47.53% were male. As for breeds, 77.20% had undefined breeds, 14.83% were Siamese and 7.97% were Persians, with age ranging from 45 days to 26 years. The main affections diagnosed were divided in the areas of internal medicine and surgery, and classified...

Cat, cougar, and jaguar spermatogenesis: a comparative analysis BABT
Costa,Deiler Sampaio; Paula,Tarcízio Antônio Rêgo; Matta,Sérgio Luiz Pinto da.
This work presents a comparative review about the spermatogenic process in cats (Felis domestica), jaguars (Panthera onca) and cougars (Puma concolor), with emphasis on testicular biometry, gonadossomatic index, volumetric proportion of testicular parenchyma components, tubular diameter, seminiferous epithelial height and seminiferous tubule length. It was an approach of the differences among the cell proportions that allowed conclusions about the overall yield of spermatogenic process and Sertoli cell index in three feline species.

Different sources of sulfur in diets of adult cats on the urinary parameters and acid-base balance Ciência Rural
Halfen,Dóris Pereira; Kessler,Alexandre de Mello; Trevizan,Luciano; Jeremias,Juliana Toloi; Vendramini,Thiago Henrique Annibale; Santos,João Paulo Fernandes; Oba,Patricia Massae; Teixeira,Fabio Alves; Brunetto,Marcio Antonio; Carciofi,Aulus Cavalieri.
ABSTRACT: Urolithiasis is a common disorder in the veterinary clinic and is considered as one of the most frequently cause of morbidity. This disorder is closely associated with urinary pH and nutrition plays a key role in the control of this disease, because through dietary manipulation it is possible to modify the urinary pH. Sulfur is considered macroelement with a strong influence on the acid-base status and may be crucial to control urinary pH in cats. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of addition of different sources of sulfur (S) in the diet of cats on the urinary parameters and acid-base balance. Forty-two healthy adult cats were divided into 3 groups, and each group of 14 cats received 7 diets in a complete randomized block...

Substitution of wheat bran by corn gluten feed without steep water in cats feed Ciência Rural
Ferreira,Lívia Geraldi; Pires,Juliana de Melo; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto; Saad,Flávia Maria de Oliveira Borges; Brandi,Roberta Ariboni; Bueno,Ives Cláudio da Silva; Barbosa,Priscila Barros; Lisenko,Karen Guttenkunst; Taffarel,Taís Regina; Reis,Jéssica Santana dos.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of substituting wheat bran (WB) by corn gluten feed without steep water (CGF) in cats feeds regarding the nutritional value of the diet, stool characteristics, time of food passage through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), intestinal gas production and concentrations of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) in blood and faeces. Twenty eight cats were distributed in a randomized block design with four treatments (0, 2.6, 5.3 or 8.0% CGF, based on dry matter, substituting for WB) and seven replicates. Substitution of WB by CGF decreased (P<0.01) the digestibility of acid detergent fibre without influencing (P>0.05) the digestibility of other nutrients and apparent metabolizable energy. There was also no...
