State estimation and optimal long period clinical treatment of HIV seropositive patients 42
Grégio,Juliana M.; Caetano,Marco A.L.; Yoneyama,Takashi.
Optimal control theory provides a very interesting quantitative method that can be used to assist the decision making process in several areas of application, such as engineering, biology, economics and sociology. The main idea is to determine the values of the manipulated variables, such as drug doses, so that some cost function is minimized, subject to physical constraints. In this work, the cost function reflects the number of CD4+T cells, viral particles and the drug doses. It is worth noticing that high drug doses are related to more intense side-effects, apart from the impact on the actual cost of the treatment. In a previous paper by the authors, the LQR - Linear Quadratic Regulator approach was proposed for the computation of long period...

Physicochemical and sensory changes in aged sugarcane spirit submitted to filtering with activated carbon filter 116
Duarte,Felipe Cimino; Cardoso,Maria das Graças; Pinheiro,Ana Carla Marques; Santiago,Wilder Douglas; Carvalho,Leonardo Luna de.
Sugarcane spirit is a drink considered as a national symbol of Brazil. It is produced by large producers and by about 30 thousand small and medium home-distilling producers dispersed throughout the country. The copper originating from the home-distillers can become a serious problem since at high concentrations in beverages it may cause serious human health problems. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the activated carbon used in commercial filters on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of aged sugarcane spirit. Analyses of copper, dry extract, alcoholic degree, higher alcohols, volatile acids, aldehydes, esters, furfural, and methanol were performed. The sensory evaluation was performed by seven selected...

Gill rakers in six teleost species: influence of feeding habit and body size 65
Almeida,Ana Paula Gottlieb; Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
This study analyzed the structure of the gill rakers of Parapimelodus valenciennis and Parapimelodus nigribarbis (planktivorous), Serrasalmus maculatus and Hoplias malabaricus (piscivorous), Iheringichthys labrosus (benthophagous) and Hypostomus commersonii (detritivorous) and related it with the body size and feeding habits of these species. The species of Parapimelodus and H. commersonii showed long, filiform and closely spaced gill rakers, similar to those of species that use the gill rakers as a filter to assist in the retention of small particles. The widely spaced gill rakers of I. labrosus probably allow the retention of insect larvae, but not particles of inorganic matter. In H. malabaricus and S. maculatus the gill rakers are most likely related...

Study of high frequency measurements from the MesuRho mooring 5
Fuchs, Rosalie; Pairaud, Ivane.
The high frequency MesuRho station, part of the MAREL network and located at the mouth of the Rhone River is presented. Measures sometimes show bias signs, drift or double, so that a graphical interface was implemented to quickly visualize data and eventually correct them. Original data set and corrected data for 2009-2013 are presented, the methods of corrections provided are detailed. Finally an example of a storm event study (under strong south east wind) between the 4th and the 7th of March 2013 is presented and some prospects to improve data management are proposed.

File filtering in Stata: Handling complex data formats and navigating log files efficiently 31
Eng, John.
A text file filter is a program that converts one text file into another on the basis of a set of rules. For statistical applications, a text file filter can convert data embedded in a complicated text file so that Stata can read and analyze it. A text file filter can also automate the production of more user-friendly output from long Stata log files. The file command lets you use text file filters in Stata. This article reviews some key programming points for successful implementation of such filters.
