New Hyphessobrycon from the upper rio Pardo drainage in eastern Brazil (Teleostei: Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Bertaco,Vinicius A.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Dergam,Jorge A..
A new species of characid, Hyphessobrycon vinaceus, is described from the upper rio Pardo, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all other Hyphessobrycon species by the combination of the following characters: the body red or reddish pigmented in live specimens, an anterior and conspicuous vertically elongate black humeral spot followed by a second faint humeral spot, 5 teeth in the inner series of premaxilla, maxilla with 2-3 pentacuspidate teeth, 15-17 branched anal-fin rays, 4-5 scale rows above and 3-4 scale rows below lateral line, lateral line with 10-26 perforated scales, 32-34 scales in a longitudinal series, and by a smaller head length in relation to standard length (23.9-26.7%).

Reproductive biology and development of sexually dimorphic structures in Aphyocharax anisitsi (Ostariophysi: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Gonçalves,Taís K.; Azevedo,Marco A.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Fialho,Clarice B..
The reproductive period of Aphyocharax anisitsi is described through the analysis of specimens collected monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 in the arroio do Salso (3022'27"S, 5502'06"W), Rosário do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The monthly variation of the Gonadosomatic Index mean (GSI) of both males and females allowed the recognition of a defined seasonal reproductive period occurring between September and February, showing a positive correlation with temperature and day-length. Absolute fecundity was 344.8 oocytes and relative fecundity 0.68 oocytes per mg of body weight. Absolute fecundity was correlated with standard length and total body weight. It was possible to identify two categories of males through the analysis of the number of rays...

A new species of Hemibrycon (Teleostei: Characiformes: Characidae) from the río Ucayali drainage, Sierra del Divisor, Peru Neotropical Ichthyology
Bertaco,Vinicius A.; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Hidalgo,Max; Ortega,Hernán.
A new characid species, Hemibrycon divisorensis, is described from the río Ucayali drainage, Loreto, Peru. The new species is distinguished from all Hemibrycon species by the presence of a wide black asymmetrical spot covering base of caudal-fin rays and extending along entire length of caudal-fin rays 9 to 12-13 (except from H. surinamensis), and a black band in the lower half of the caudal peduncle extending from the region above the last anal-fin rays to the caudal-fin base. Furthermore, it is distinguished from most species of the genus by the number of scale rows below the lateral line (4-5 vs 5-9), except H. jabonero, H. microformaa, H. orcesi, and H. surinamensis. It differs from these species by scale and fin ray counts and color pattern. The lack...

Reproductive period and fecundity of Serrapinnus piaba (Characidae: Cheirodontinae) from the rio Ceará Mirim, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Silvano,Jacira; Oliveira,Cristina L. C.; Fialho,Clarice B.; Gurgel,Hélio C. B..
Specimens of Serrapinnus piaba were collected monthly from April 2001 to April 2002 in the rio Ceará Mirim, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The reproductive period, determined through the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturation stages, occurred from January to April. Non-parametric Spearman test was performed in order to test correlation of monthly GSI variation in males and females with water temperature, rainfall and day length. Rainfall and Temperature were correlated with GSI variation in females only and day length showed a negative correlation with GSI variation of males only. It was verified the presence of hooks on the anal fin of mature and maturing males along all the period of study. The absolute fecundity mean was...
