Contrasting perception of fish trophic level from stomach content and stable isotope analyses: A Mediterranean artificial reef experience ArchiMer

A large complex of artificial reefs was deployed in the Bay of Marseilles, North-Western Mediterranean, for the enhancement of commercial fisheries stocks. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope and stomach content analyses were performed on 23 fish species collected on the artificial reefs to assess their trophic position and feeding behaviour. Results indicated that fish diets were not modified on the artificial reefs compared to natural environments, nor was the structure of their trophic network. Artificial reefs, with their complex design, provide diverse and abundant food sources for fishes. Régime alimentaire de poissons carnivores des récifs coralliens de Nouvelle Calédonie ArchiMer

A total of 212 carnivorous coastal fish species from New Caledonia, represented by 7335 individuals, were analysed for their diet. Fifty two prey items were identified and later grouped into broader taxonomic categories refered as "prey types". For each fish species 6 biological traits were defined: maximum adult size, major biotope, schooling behaviour, home range, nycthemeral behaviour, degree of crypticity. A general linear model was fit to the diet data taking into account these traits, and depth of capture and fish family. In this paper we evaluate plasticity of fish concerning diet. We expect that sampling over a large temporal and spatial scale, including environmental changes such as impoundments, will allow us to cover most of the diet plasticity. We also evaluate the efficacy of ordination method in discriminating trophic groups based on fish species diet. Data were obtained from 17 sampling stations sampled monthly from March/96 to February/99 in the Corumbá river drainage, before and after the formation of the Corumba reservoir. Trophic guilds of fishes in sandbank habitats of a Neotropical river Neotropical Ichthyology

The objective of this study was to characterize the trophic structure of the community of fishes exploiting riverine sandbank habitats. Collections were carried out during the period of October 1999 to December 2003, on six sand banks in the upper and middle portions of the Tocantins River drainage basin in central Brazil. The availability of food resources was evaluated based on the volume of the items present in the stomachs of all species. A total of 2,127 stomachs of fish belonging to 50 species were analyzed. Nine main trophic guilds grouped the local ichthyofauna according to diet. The role of vegetated areas on fish assemblage of the Paraná River floodplain: effects of different hydrological conditions Neotropical Ichthyology

In this paper, we analyze the changes in composition and abundance of fish assemblages in seven vegetated floodplain wetlands with different connectivity across different hydrologic conditions: after a prolonged connection of the floodplain with the main channel, during receding water, and after a prolonged isolation. We also investigated the size and abundance of large-sized migratory species found in these wetlands and the food resources exploited by the dominant fish. Fishes were captured by diurnal seining (8.0 m x 1.50 m, 5 mm mesh) along macrophyte banks. The construction of dams brings about changes in the course of a river, which directly or indirectly affect the fish fauna. Alterations in the food resources available to the fish favor some species and deter others. In addition to the implications originating from damming, Jordão Reservoir has a characteristically large number of endemic species that, because of the impacts they have undergone, run the risk of extinction.
