Information on larval fish feeding is essential for understanding their trophic relations, including the management in conditions totally or partially controlled by humans. An experiment was designed to evaluate the larval diets of three commercially important species. Four varzea-lakes and the adjacent river were sampled with bongo and hand nets from January 1993 to November 1995. Larval diets were evaluated by length-classes and capture sites, and were tested by two factor ANOVA. The larvae were feeding in all habitats, except in the flooded forests. The three species had different diets, which varied with their length and lake. The rotifers were the main initial food item of the three species, replaced by fish larvae in Brycon cephalus, cladocerans in... |

ABSTRACT Specimens of cultured zebrafish acquired from different fish farms in Brazil may show genetic variability and alteration in allele frequency due to genetic drift and selective pressure in a captive environment, resulting in the differentiation of productive and reproductive characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability and reproductive characteristics of 180 zebrafish specimens from six Brazilian fish farms. A deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed in all evaluated stocks. Differentiation among stocks was observed in the amount of genetic variability with respect to observed heterozygosity and the inbreeding coefficient (FIS). Genetic distance between stocks was determined through the Fst index,... |

The effects of microcapsule diet as co-feeding for early weaning phase of gourami larvae where evaluated in terms of ingestion rate of microcapsule, growth, and survival rate. The availability of tubifex worms as natural food is uncertain and can introduce pathogens to fish culture from outside environment. Therefore, the attempt to replace or substitute this natural food continues in order to reduce the level of dependence. This research used Complete Randomized Designed (CRD) with four treatments based on a different protocol feeding management. Gourami larvae should be started with the co-feeding on day 12 until day 17 and they are more receptive to microcapsule diets after day 17. The ingestion rate of microcapsule which consumed by the larvae during... |

The experiment had as objective to study the survival of Piaractus mesopotamicus and Oreochromis niloticus larvae subject to predation by Pantala flavescens larvae with different length classes. We used 120 larvae of P. mesopotamicus, 120 of O. niloticus, and also 24 larvae of Pantala flavescens, distributed in 24 aquariums with useful volume for 2 L, being placed one Odonate for aquarium. The treatments differed as regard to the prey species and the predator size, being kept a control treatment. An aquarium (2 L) containing one larvae of Odonate and 10 larvae of fish were considered an experimental unit. After the beginning, each three hours (18:00, 21:00, 0:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00h), the remnant larvae of fish (alive) in each... |

The family Bathylagidae contains eight genera and 22 species, of which only five occur in the Southwest Atlantic. Until recently, only adult specimens of the bathylaginin Melanolagus bericoides had been recorded off southern Brazil, between the Santa Marta Cape and Rio Grande (31° S and 49° W). The present work reports the first occurrence of Dolicholagus longirostris larvae on the northern Brazilian coast, expanding its distribution in the Southwest Atlantic. The two specimens found were collected near the mouth of the Amazon River (02° 00' 19" N, 47° 03' 30" W, and 00° 49' 06" N, 46° 25' 09" W). |

Despite its importance, most ichthyoplankton studies in the South-Southeastern coast of Brazil, have been accomplished on the continental shelf. Regarding the beach environment, recognized as a nursery, little is known about the ichthyoplankton. We analyzed 288 samples collected with a 18 by 2 m seine net, 1 mm mesh and a conical plankton net, with a mesh of 300 mum and a 60 cm mouth. Eucinostomus argenteus comprised 78 % of the larvae and juveniles caught in the samples. The occurrence of gerreids was strongly concentrated in the summer, while the Menticirrhus littoralis, Menticirrhus americanus and Umbrina coroides were present during all seasons. M.littoralis was most abundant during spring, while M. americanus and U. coroides dominated during winter.... |

The establishment of evaluation parameters for larvae and juvenile quality assessment is highly desirable. The experiment evaluated the Stress Resistance Rate (Re) on Hoplias lacerdae larvae and juveniles. Larvae on the 13th, 16th, 19th, 23rd and 26th days of life were subjected to Re evaluation tests. Twenty animals were stoked in one liter beaker and kept at 27 to 28.5°C. The following treatments were applied: E3 -3 minutes; E5 - 5 minutes; E7 - 7 minutes; E10 - 10 minutes and E15 -15 minutes on drying paper. After 24 hours Re was evaluated. It was observed that Re values showed an increase from 13th to 19th day in all treatments indicating an increasing resistance related to larval development. High Re rates were observed during the whole experiment,... |

The interest in probiotics for aquaculture is increasing rapidly. In the present work we evaluated the potential of some yeast to induce the larvae gut maturation in sea bass larvae Dicentrarchus labrax. The production of polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine was quantified in ten yeast strains using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Afterwards, fluorescently labelled yeast adhesion to the intestine of sea bass larvae and the spotted sand bass (Paralabrax maculatofasciatus) was evaluated by fluorescent microscopy. Two of them, CBS 8339 strain (Debaryomyces hansenii) and X2180 strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) produce the polyamines of our interest. The same strains showed the best adhering capabilities to the sea bass and spotted sand... |

This report is presented by Chantal Cahu for obtaining accreditation to supervise research. Since 1981, her research activity has addressed the study of reproducers' nutrition and the young stages of development of marine organisms belonging to two different branch lines, crustaceans and fish. This work, performed in a base-lined research body, IFREMER, is placed within a more general programme of aquaculture development. Indeed, whatever species are at issue, the development of aquaculture in France, as at the global level, is based on the production of juveniles in hatcheries. My work has therefore more precisely the goal of acquiring knowledge about the nutritional needs, mechanisms of digestion and the development of these animals in order to improve... |

A new biochemical index was used to assess larval fish nutritional condition during a. survey cruise in the Bay of Biscay in early June 1993. This period corresponds to the breeding season of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.). The analysis of samples taken at grid points indicated a clear spatial pattern in nutritional condition, which increased from the middle shelf to the shelf edge. A relatively large fraction of the larval population proved to be in poor condition. Strong winds with speeds of 20-30 knots occurred during 3 d after the first survey and affected the vertical hydrological structure. During a subsequent survey, samples taken at approximately the same locations showed that anchovy larvae in all areas were in very poor... |

A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells. |

Probiotics may have many effects on health and development of fish larvae. One of the most promising is related to spinal conformation, though the mode of action is not clearly understood. The present study attempted to investigate the effects of two strains of lactic acid bacteria on associated microbiota, histological development and gene expression. Sea bass larvae were fed since 5 dph (day post hatch) with either a standard control diet (Diet C), or the same diet supplemented with Pediococcus acidilactici MA18/5M (Diet P), or with an autochthonous strain of Lactobacillus casei (X2; Diet L). The two lactic acid bacteria were incorporated in the diets at the levels of 106 and 107 CFU (colony forming units) g-1 in two consecutive experiments,... |

Most demersal fishes undergo a dispersal phase as larvae, which strongly influences the connectivity among adult populations and, consequently, their genetic structure and replenishment opportunities. Because this phase is difficult to observe directly, it is frequently simulated through numerical models, most of which consider larvae as passive or only vertically migrating. However, in several locations, including the Mediterranean Sea, many species have been shown to swim fast and orient. Here we use a Lagrangian model to study connectivity patterns among three Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and compare simulations in which virtual larvae are passive to simulations in which oriented swimming is implemented. The parameterization of behavior... |
