The totality of French landings of whelk (Buccinum undatum L.) is assignable to the fisheries of the Normand-Breton Gulf, western Channel. The aim of this paper is to forecast economic rent of the potters of the harbour of Granville, as a function of the two main variates open to supervision: the size of the fishing fleet, and the number of whelk-pots per ship. In order to assess the biological and financial consequences of a prospective development, a deterministic model of the fleet-resource system is proposed. Results of simulations emphasize the sharpness of the rent-dissipation problem under existing tendencies. Therefore some recommendations are put forward to derive a fishery policy that would enable the system to be maintained near optimal... |

The purpose of this book is to value the economic significance of marine-related activities in France. Each industrial, or public non-commercial, sector is characterized by key figures relating to annual turnover, value added, employment and budget. These figures are accompanied with qualitative information on the recent development, current situation and future perspectives of the sector in terms of markets, employment and technological progress. Public and private R&D is also allowed for. Given the diversity of marine-related activities, this information aims at enabling the reader to assess their importance from a comparative angle. From the sector-based approach it is possible to draw certain conclusions. Notably, commercial activities contributed... |

The authors deal with the coastal fisheries in the Reunion Island. In a first chapter they describe the geographical environment of this island (volcanism, climate, cyclones, hydrology, currents water masses) which has an influence on fisheries results. The second and third chapter describe the commercial species of the Reunion island (pelagic fishes: Scombridae as Thunnus albacares, Katsunonus pelamis, Euthynnus affinis, Thunnus obesus, Gymnosarda unicolor, Thunnus alalunga, other fishes as Xiphias gladius, Makaira mazara, Istiophorus platypterus. The fourth chapter deals with the fishing gears and the catching methods. The fifth chapter is devoted to fishery economics, financing |

This document presents a survey of the sea-related activities in France, i.e. those of the commercial sector (exploitation of mineral and living resources, manufacturing industries, services) and those of the non-commercial public sector (Navy, State services, education, safety, marine research). A chapter is devoted to the protection of the coastal and marine environment. Each activity of the commercial sector is described by key-figures (turnover, value added, employment); the description of the non-commercial public sector includes data on costs, including personnel costs. In addition to these figures, qualitative information is given on the recent development, present situation and future prospect of each activity. This set of data and information... |

The foreign artisanal fishery of Pointe-Noire (Congo) significantly evolved since its beginning, in the 1950s, by the number of fishermen and canoes, as well as the fishing techniques used and by its socio-economic organization. The fishery for Sardinella by surface gill-nets, its main activity, is based on common ownership and savings, thus allowing partial reinvestment of fishing revenues, the riskier (such as bottom gill-net) being left to individual initiatives. The foreign fishery employs many Congolese fishermen, in a permanent or very occasional way. However no improvement effect seems to have taken place in favor of the local artisanal fishery. |

Environmental factors other than fishing effort, contribute to influencing marine pelagic fish population dynamics and abundance. There is evidence from environmental modelling and bioeconomic analysis of the Ghanaian marine inshore pelagic fisheries. Ghana is a West African country and lies on the Greenwich Meridian. It is bordered at the South by the Gulf of Guinea. The official language of Ghana is English, but is surrounded by French speaking countries. The inshore fishery is a multi-specie, multi-fleet fishery, consisting of artisanal and inshore purse seine fleets. The coastal inhabitants depend mainly on the marine fisheries as source of employment and livelihood. Fisheries constitute 5% of Agriculture GDP. The two fisheries types in the inshore... |

The development of the small scale marine fisheries in Tanzania is influenced by conditions in the other sectors of the economy. The artisanal fisheries are particularly sensitive to the general conditions of the economy. The small scale fisheries sector (artisanal fisheries) plays a role that has devolved upon agriculture. Generally, the sector is characterised by underemployment, low incomes, retarded technology and low labour skills as a result of the dual nature of the economy. This paper outlines the major constraints hindering the development of the small scale fisheries of the marine sector in Tanzania and provides tentative development policies for the upgrading of artisanal fisheries through improvement of catch, distribution and marketing. |

This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year... |
