Estimating the Adaptive Capacity of Local Communities at Marine Protected Areas in Latin America: a Practical Approach Ecology and Society
Moreno-Sánchez, Rocio del Pilar; Conservation Strategy Fund; rocio@conservation-strategy.org.
The establishment of marine protected areas (MPA) has become the prevailing management strategy to stop the degradation of coastal and marine ecosystems; however, the effectiveness of MPAs is affected not only by ecological factors but also by social ones. Identifying and understanding socioeconomic conditions and the institutional context of fishing communities is essential to achieve success with MPAs. We propose a practical methodology for estimating the adaptive capacity (AC) of local communities to the establishment of MPAs. Adaptive capacity is defined as the ability of households to anticipate and respond to disturbances, natural or human induced, and to minimize, cope with, and recover from the consequences. We propose an index of adaptive...

Dynamique des populations marines exploitées. Tome 1. Concepts et modèles ArchiMer
Laurec, Alain; Le Guen, Jean-claude.
This book constitutes the first of a series of three volumes, the purpose of which is to cover the principal methods used in fish population dynamics. It is devoted to the definition of the main concepts, ami the presentation of the usual mathematical models. The second volume will deal with the fitting of the models, and the estimation of parameters. The third will be devoted to sampling problems. These volumes will be recollections of communications presented during ad hoc seminars, hold in Brest (GSG/COB) in 1980 and 1981. The first part deals with the basic concepts related to the two components whose relationship is being described by the population dynamics, namely the fish stock, to its relations with biological populations, and to the partition of...

L'épuisement des ressources : mythe ou réalité ? ArchiMer
Forest, Andre.
Following the decision of the European Union to enforce drastic management actions in the fishery sector, there is now a debate on the reality of the overexploitation of the major living resources. This paper firstly provides an overview of the state of the world fishery resources as it is shown by international studies. It then focus on European fisheries which are of interest for the French fleets, including those which are not managed by a TAC and quotas system. Finally, various arguments which are often used to explain the depletion of fishery resources in European waters are examined. We conclude that fishing dominates all other factors with regard to the evolution of marine living resources.

Estimation des stocks de poissons des lagons de Nouvelle-Calédonie : 3 – Pression de pêche, rendements potentiels et impact sur les options d’aménagement ArchiMer
Labrosse, Pierre; Letourneur, Y; Kulbicki, M; Paddon, Jr.
The potential yields of demersal reefal and lagoonal finfish, which are valuable for trade or consumption in the Northern Province of New Caledonia, are unknown. Fishing pressure was estimated from tally-sheets of professional fishermen to assess trade fishing and a household consumption survey to assess subsistence fishing. Total yield was estimated to be 1 326 tonnes in 1995, 94 % of which correspond to subsistence fishing. Most of the catches were taken from the east and west coasts; in the north zone (Belep Archipelago) catches were very low. From this fishing pressure and the total stock values, the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was estimated to be 12 600 t, which was about 10 % of the total stocks assessed in the Northern Province (138 300 t). This...

Taxonomic status of two morphotypes of Coryphaena hippurus (Perciformes: Coryphaenidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Bonner,Alan; Duarte,Michelle R.; Souza,Rosa C. C. L.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Silva,Edson P..
ABSTRACT Two Coryphaena hippurus morphotypes (dourado and palombeta) are found along the Brazilian coast and are considered by Rio de Janeiro’s fisherman and fishmongers as two different species. Furthermore, these morphotypes are commercialized under different values and suffer different fishing pressure. Therefore, a definition of their taxonomic status is an important economic and biological matter. In order to investigate this problem, allozyme electrophoresis method was undertaken for seventeen loci on 117 individuals of C. hippurus sampled at Cabo Frio/RJ (Brazil). The data indicate homogeneity between the morphotypes gene pools. Nevertheless, differences were found for genetic variation among dourado and palombeta, especially due to alcohol...

The most important fishery resource in the Amazon, the migratory catfish Brachyplatystoma vaillantii (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae), is composed by an unique and genetically diverse population in the Solimões-Amazonas River System Neotropical Ichthyology
Formiga,Kyara Martins; Batista,Jacqueline da Silva; Alves-Gomes,José Antônio.
ABSTRACT The migratory catfish Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is one of the most important fishery resources in the Amazon. Intense capture occurs associated to its life cycle. In order to know the genetic status, we sequenced the mitochondrial DNA control region from 150 individuals of B. vaillantii, collected in five fishing landing locations, covering the length of the Solimões-Amazonas River in Brazil. Genetic diversity parameters suggest there is no genetic differentiation between the five localities. Population’s expansion indicated by R 2 and Fu’s Fs tests was also confirmed by the high number of unique haplotypes found. The Analyses of molecular variance indicated that nearly all variability was contained within locations (99.86%), and estimates of...

Coral Transplantation and Restocking to Accelerate the Recovery of Coral Reef Habitats and Fisheries Resources Within No-Take Marine Protected Areas: Hands-On Approaches to Support Community-Based Coral Reef Management OceanDocs
Bowden-Kerby, A..
Of the planet’s 600,000 km2 of coral reefs (Jameson et al., 1995), roughly 70-80% are located in developing countries. Many of these reefs are owned or controlled by indigenous fishing communities rather than national or state governments. These rural fishing communities are a primary force of destruction to coral reefs on a global scale (Wilkinson, 1998), therefore their involvement in the management and conservation of coral reefs will be an essential part of reversing coral reef decline....
