Following the decision of the European Union to enforce drastic management actions in the fishery sector, there is now a debate on the reality of the overexploitation of the major living resources. This paper firstly provides an overview of the state of the world fishery resources as it is shown by international studies. It then focus on European fisheries which are of interest for the French fleets, including those which are not managed by a TAC and quotas system. Finally, various arguments which are often used to explain the depletion of fishery resources in European waters are examined. We conclude that fishing dominates all other factors with regard to the evolution of marine living resources. |

ABSTRACT Two Coryphaena hippurus morphotypes (dourado and palombeta) are found along the Brazilian coast and are considered by Rio de Janeiro’s fisherman and fishmongers as two different species. Furthermore, these morphotypes are commercialized under different values and suffer different fishing pressure. Therefore, a definition of their taxonomic status is an important economic and biological matter. In order to investigate this problem, allozyme electrophoresis method was undertaken for seventeen loci on 117 individuals of C. hippurus sampled at Cabo Frio/RJ (Brazil). The data indicate homogeneity between the morphotypes gene pools. Nevertheless, differences were found for genetic variation among dourado and palombeta, especially due to alcohol... |

The demersal phase (from 18th to November 01th, 1995) of cruise T95/10/04 DO, covered an area of 15632,6 km2 between 00º36'0”N-80º34'3”O and 03º22'8”S-80º49'5”O, of the Ecuadorian Continental Plataform, the depth range from 14 to 115 meters. 120 species were recorded, divided into 85 osseous fish species, three sharks, 11 ray, 18 crustaceans, two molluscan and one holothurid (sea cucumber). Total biomass was estimated as 95297,5 t; with 97,3% of this biomass distributed between 01º00'0”S and 03º23'S. The most abundant species were: barriga juma (Larimus spp) (11153 t), corvina (Cynoscion spp) (4523 t), gallineta (Prionotus spp) (55651 t), perela (Palabrax callaensis) (3774 t) and ravi junco (Centrithmus signifer) (2407 t). |

The main types of wetlands in Tanzania are described as an introduction to a coverage of the fisheries of the large lakes, the minor waters, the rivers and the intertidal ecosystems.Fisheries potential is estimated and details of catches for each wetland type are given.Fishing techniques and the future of the fisheries are discussed and recommendations madefor future wetlands fishery conservation. |

The first meeting of the South West Indian Ocean EAF Regional Task Group (RTG) was held in Mombasa, Kenya, from 27 to 30 January 2009, together with an ecological risk assessment methodology workshop. It was attended by 20 partic ipants from the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) countries, the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP), the Agulhas and Somali Currents Large Marine Ecosystems (ASCLME) project, the Scientific Committee of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/Nairobi Convention Implementation Unit, the African Union Commission and FAO. The RTG is an implementation structure under the EAF-Nansen project GCP/INT/003/NOR and serves as the forum for training in ecological risk... |

Of the planet’s 600,000 km2 of coral reefs (Jameson et al., 1995), roughly 70-80% are located in developing countries. Many of these reefs are owned or controlled by indigenous fishing communities rather than national or state governments. These rural fishing communities are a primary force of destruction to coral reefs on a global scale (Wilkinson, 1998), therefore their involvement in the management and conservation of coral reefs will be an essential part of reversing coral reef decline.... |

A fishery resource profile for Moree has been developed to help in exploring linkages between migration dynamics and the organisation and management of fishery activities in the study community. The biophysical study component of the Small Scale Fisheries in Africa project involves the following: (a) an assessment of the quality and quantity of fish and marine resources available to the community including best estimates of current fish stocks and natural patterns affecting their availability, (b) a review of the main types of fishing technologies used to exploit fish stocks in the community, (c) any significant qualitative and quantitative changes in fish stocks which have been documented in recent years, and (d) an assessment of the main biological and... |
