Predicting hunter behavior of indigenous communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon: insights from a household production model Ecology and Society
Maldonado, Jorge H; CEDE - Department of Economics, Universidad de los Andes; jmaldona@uniandes.edu.co.
Many indigenous communities living in the Amazon rely on hunting and fishing to meet the majority of their protein needs. Despite the importance of these practices, few studies from the region have analyzed the socioeconomic drivers of hunting and fishing at the household level. We propose a household production model to assess the effect of key economic parameters on hunting and fishing in small indigenous communities located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, whose principal source of protein is derived from hunting and fishing. The model was validated using empirical data from two communities that reflect different levels of market integration and forest conservation. Demand and supply functions were generated from household data gathered over 19 months....

Ecological States and the Resilience of Coral Reefs Ecology and Society
McClanahan, Tim; Wildlife Conservation Society; crcp@africaonline.co.ke; Polunin, Nicholas; Newcastle University; n.polunin@ncl.ac.uk; Done, Terry; Australian Institute of Marine Science; t.done@aims.gov.au.
We review the evidence for multiple ecological states and the factors that create ecological resilience in coral reef ecosystems. There are natural differences among benthic communities along gradients of water temperature, light, nutrients, and organic matter associated with upwelling-downwelling and onshore-offshore systems. Along gradients from oligotrophy to eutrophy, plant-animal symbioses tend to decrease, and the abundance of algae and heterotrophic suspension feeders and the ratio of organic to inorganic carbon production tend to increase. Human influences such as fishing, increased organic matter and nutrients, sediments, warm water, and transportation of xenobiotics and diseases are common causes of a large number of recently reported ecological...

Conceptualizing and Operationalizing Social Resilience within Commercial Fisheries in Northern Australia Ecology and Society
Marshall, Nadine A; CSIRO; nadine.marshall@csiro.au; Marshall, Paul A; Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority; p.marshall@gbrmpa.gov.au.
How can we tell whether resource-dependent people are socially resilient to institutional change? This question is becoming increasingly important as demand for natural resources escalates, requiring resource managers to implement policies that are increasingly restrictive on resource users. Yet policy changes are frequently made without a good understanding of the likely social and economic consequences. Knowledge of the resilience of resource users to changes in resource-use policies can assist in the design and implementation of policies that minimize the impacts on people while maximizing the sustainability of ecosystem goods and services. Despite the appeal of resilience as a framework for sustaining human-environment relations, there has been a...

Болтачёв, А. Р..

Reproductive biology of the swimming crab Achelous spinimanus (Decapoda, Portunoidea): a potential fishing resource Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sousa,Aline N.; Bernardes,Veronica P.; Bernardo,Camila H.; Taddei,Fabiano G.; Teixeira,Gustavo M.; Costa,Rogério C.; Fransozo,Adilson.
ABSTRACT This study describes the reproductive and recruitment patterns of the swimming crab Achelous spinimanus (Latreille, 1819) in the Ubatuba region of the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were captured monthly from January 1998 to December 1999 in 18 sites located in three bays (Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, and Mar Virado), using a commercial fishing boat. In each sampling area, bottom temperature, salinity, and organic matter content were recorded. A total of 1,911 individuals were captured: 350 adult males, 475 non-ovigerous adult females, 584 adult ovigerous females, and 502 immature individuals. Reproductive females were more abundant in deeper areas; this migration might be a strategy to improve larval dispersion and survival. Ovigerous females...

Compactation for a better management of marine biomass: applications to fish discards and by-products ArchiMer
Perez-galvez, Raul.
In the framework of the future application of a zero-discard policy in EU fisheries, this thesis aims to develop and implement an efficient and integral waste management both on board the fishing vessels and in land (fish auctions and fish processing industry). To this end, it proposes a compaction operation able to reduce the volume and the water activity of the fish wastes, thus favouring their handling and reducing the economical costs associated to their transport and storage. To asses the viability of a waste compaction operation, the main operation factors governing the process were identified, and their influence upon the performance of the compacting operation was investigated by a statistical approach. Sardine was chosen as fish species since it...

An End-to-End Model Reveals Losers and Winners in a Warming Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Moullec, Fabien; Barrier, Nicolas; Drira, Sabrine; Guilhaumon, François; Marsaleix, Patrick; Somot, Samuel; Ulses, Caroline; Velez, Laure; Shin, Yunne-jai.
The Mediterranean Sea is now recognized as a hotspot of global change, ranking among the fastest warming ocean regions. In order to project future plausible scenarios of marine biodiversity at the scale of the whole Mediterranean basin, the current challenge is to develop an explicit representation of the multispecies spatial dynamics under the combined influence of fishing pressure and climate change. Notwithstanding the advanced state-of-the-art modeling of food webs in the region, no previous studies have projected the consequences of climate change on marine ecosystems in an integrated way, considering changes in ocean dynamics, in phyto- and zoo-plankton productions, shifts in Mediterranean species distributions and their trophic interactions at the...

Towards multidisciplinary indicator dashboards for coral reef fisheries management ArchiMer

The diversity of reef ecosystems, the multiplicity of reef resource uses and the breadth of the range of the island socio-cultural contexts concerned make coral reef fisheries (CRF) management in the South Pacific a complex task. The health and state of the targeted resources depend both on ecosystem characteristics (as determined by ecological and biological factors) and on fishing pressure, whose effects are only partly known. Increasing harvests from commercial and recreational fishing increasingly overlap with traditional Subsistence activity, creating an important CRF management challenge. This paper presents a new approach to CRF assessment and monitoring by providing a set of multidisciplinary indicators. The fisheries system is assessed from three...

Analyse de la pecherie de petoncle noir et de coquille Saint-Jacques de la rade de Brest ArchiMer
Merrien, A.
For the fourth consecutive year, the fishing returns of the shelly season of the roads of Brest are analyzed. For the black Scallop, principal species currently exploited, the goal is to know the evolution of the fisheries. For the shell St Jacques, season 86-87 saw a light improvement of the captures due to a good recruitment during summer 84. In the first chapter the general conditions of the unfolding of the countryside are treated, in the following are analyzed the captures of black scallop then of shell St Jacques. In appendix the data of effort and production of the other species during the season appear.

Oyster reefs are among the most threatened marine habitats globally. In Europe, oyster reefs have been extirpated from most locations within their historical range. Active restoration of the native oyster (Ostrea edulis) in Europe has grown substantially in recent years. In sharing experiences between oyster restoration projects in Europe at the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance conference, NORA2, in Edinburgh in May 2019, it became apparent that a number of similar barriers are experienced. This study identified the top 40 questions, which, if answered, would have the greatest influence on the policy and practice of oyster restoration in Europe. Initially 71 people were consulted across 28 institutions and 11 European countries to generate 194 questions....
