Precision of abundance index estimation Merluccius hubbsi is directly related with the variability that normally occurs during the fishing operation and consequently in the geometry of the net duringeach haul. Some of these factors can be controlled, therefore the standardization of the sampling methodology avoids differences in the behaviour and 'work' of the net minimizing variations in the catchability between hauls. The acoustic equipment (SCANMAR) in there search vessels, allows to monitore the fishing operation during the trawl and to develop strategies in order to reduce the variability and to improve the precision of the estimations. The applicability of the methodology and there for the validity of the estimates indifferent cruises must be studied... |

A mothership/dory fishing operation 'Pecheur Breton' caught 559.8 tonnes of fish in and around the exclusive economic zone of the Seychelles between October 1992 and May 1993. The vessel fished using 12 inboard powered diesel catcher boats which were equipped with echo-sounders and electric fishing reels, two men fished from each boat. Lutjanids were the most common species group in the catch representing (45%) of the total followed by Lethrinids (32%), Serranids (15%) and other species (8%) the majority of which were pelagics. Detailed catch/effort logs were kept for each dory on a daily basis by an experienced Seychelles Fishing Authority technician. The data was analyzed using a FOXBASE programme and the results presented in this report. During three... |

This report presents analyses of data for Trips 2, 3 and 4 undertaken by the mothership - dory fishing venture of Pecheur Breton. Trip 1 was described separately (Mees, 1991). A comparison of data for the 4 trips follows. Trip 2, from 22 October 1991 - 16 December 1991 targeted stocks at the SE edge of the Mahe Plateau (25 days), the banks South of the Plateau (12 days), Amirantes (5 days), Platte (1 day) and the Providence / Farquhar group (12 days). 665 dory fishing trips landed 248.86 tonnes of fish of which 85.4% were demersal species. The mean catch rate was 12.76 kg/man-hour. Trip 3, from 8 January 1992 - 12 March 1992 fished for 28 days in the Amirantes, 22 at the banks South of the Mahe Plateau, 5 on the SE edge of the Mahe Plateau and 2 days at... |
