Status of Dolichopodidae of the Flemish red data book in the Netherlands (Insecta: Diptera) The distribution and status of threatened and rare Flemish dolichopodid species in the Netherlands is investigated. Rarity classes are based on the percentage of sampled UTM 10 km squares with species records, in combination with the most recent capture date. The Dutch fauna comprises 244 species, 22 of which have presumably become extinct. About 52% of the 224 shared species with Flanders seem to be more common in the latter region. Among the 23 species that are more widespread in the Netherlands, saltmarsh-, heathland-inhabiting and riparian species are better represented than in the entire shared fauna. The observed faunal discrepancies might be related to... |

The most recent detailed geological map of Belgium (scale 1:40000) dates from the turning of the century. The Belgian Geological Survey and the Directorate of Natural Resources and Energy of the Flemish Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned a new geological map scale (1:50000) to the Geological Institutes of the Universities of Gent and Leuven, to be drawn on basis of the archives of the Geological Survey, completed with data provided by licenciate and Ph.D. theses, publications, internal reports,… As it was the commissioners' aim the new geological map to have a greater applicability and to be highly user friendly, the option was taken to adopt lithostratigraphical units as the basal mapping units, enabling secondary economical and planning survey... |

A multimetric fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) was composed to assess the biotic integrity of Flandrian water bodies. As fish communities differ substantially between standing waters, running waters of the bream zone and running waters of the barbel zone, eight candidate metrics for each of these water types or zones were identified, representing three major classes of biological attributes. These are species richness and composition, fish condition and abundance, trophic composition. The metrics were tested and modified where needed. The IBI was applied throughout Flanders on 104 locations in standing waters, 500 locations in waters of the bream zone and 257 locations in waters of the barbel zone. Standing waters scored substantially different from... |

Within the framework of the nitrate directive, member states have the possibility to apply for derogation, i.e. increasing fertilization standards under certain conditions. Several EU regions have made use of this possibility but all in a different way. In 2009, 6 different derogation policies were worked out. This paper focuses on the differences between the applied policies and makes an assessment of the impact of these differences on the application rate of derogation, the manure surplus and the costs to allocate the manure. Based on the MP-MAS model described by Van der Straeten et al. (2010) the different scenarios are applied on a single case area (Flanders) and the economic effects have been simulated. Results show large differences between the... |
