| Abstract: Local greenhouse gas flow measurement studies have been encouraged at a global level as a subsidy for national and state inventories. This study aimed to evaluate the seasonal methane emission during the 2008/2009 harvest, from an irrigated rice plantation, under pre-germinated system, in the municipality of Tremembé, State of São Paulo, using the static chamber technique and gas chromatography. The study showed high seasonal emission of methane (CH4) for the studied area, probably due to the long flooding period. It was estimated the CH4 emission factor (6.51 kg CH4 ha-1 dia-1), the partial global warming potential (pGWP, 27.2 Mg CO2eq growing season-1 ha-1) and the yield-scaled pGWP (YpGWP, 3.9 kg CO2eq kg-1 grain). ? | Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the diurnal variation of methane (CH4) emission in a flooded-irrigated rice field at different stages of the plant development under tropical climate in three growing seasons, in order to determine the most appropriate time for gas sampling in the Brazilian Southeast region. It aimed also to verify correlations between CH4 flux and air, water and soil temperatures, and solar radiation. The CH4 emissions were measured every 3-hour interval on specific days in different development stages of the flooded rice in the Experiment Station of the Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios (APTA), Pólo Regional Vale do Paraíba, at Pindamonhangaba, State of São Paulo (22°55? S, 45°30? W), Brazil. Different CH4 emission... |

Resumo: Flooded rice cultivation represents one of the main global anthropogenic sources of methane (CH4), a major greenhouse gas that strongly affects atmospheric photochemistry. CH4 production and emissions are influenced by several factors, such as climate, organic residues in water and soil, root exudates, water management, soil physicochemical and biological characteristics, and the cultivar. There are few studies in Brazil focused on the influence of cultivars on CH4 emissions. This experiment aimed to evaluate seasonal methane emissions using two varieties, IAC 105 and Epagri 106, in a pre-germinated cultivation system with a continuous water regime in the municipality of Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo. Methane emissions were quantified using the static...

The objective of this work was to evaluate the relationship between soil chemical and biological attributes and the magnitude of cuts and fills after the land leveling process of a lowland soil. Soil samples were collected from the 0 - 0.20 m layer, before and after leveling, on a 100 point grid established in the experimental area, to evaluate chemical attributes and soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC). Leveling operations altered the magnitude of soil chemical and biological attributes. Values of Ca, Mg, S, cation exchange capacity, Mn, P, Zn, and soil organic matter (SOM) decreased in the soil profile, whereas Al, K, and MBC increased after leveling. Land leveling decreased in 20% SOM average content in the 0 - 0.20 m layer. The great majority of the...

ABSTRACT Rice yield increases in response to improvements in crop management, but the impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the subtropical region of Southern Brazil remains unknown. A three-year field study was developed aiming to evaluate the impact that an increase in crop management levels (high and very high) has on soil methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, as compared to the level (medium) currently adopted by farmers in Southern Brazil. Differences in crop management included seed and fertilizer rates, irrigation, and pesticide use. The effect of crop management levels on the annual partial global warming potential (pGWP = CH4 × 25 + N2O × 298) ranged from 7,547 to 17,711 kg CO2eq ha−1 and this effect was larger than on the rice...
