Bromeliad ornamental species: conservation issues and challenges related to commercialization - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i1.7314 Biological Sciences
Negrelle, Raquel Rejane Bonato; Universidade Federal do Paraná - UFPR; Anacleto, Adilson; Faculdade do Litoral Paranaense; Mitchell, Darcy; Royal Roads University.
Bromeliads grow almost exclusively in the New World tropics and subtropics, mainly in South America in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (ca. 1200 species). Within the last few decades, their beautiful shapes and colors, low maintenance and easy adaptability to small gardens have brought bromeliads into worldwide use as ornamental plants. While the ornamental bromeliad trade could make significant contributions to household economies in rural areas, the trade may represent a significant threat in some of the bromeliad biodiversity hotspot countries such as Brazil, Bolivia and Colombia. This paper presents an overview of production volumes, analysis of the Brazilian bromeliads trade chain – at the state, national and international levels – and recommendations...

Carneiro,Daniella Nogueira Moraes; Almeida,Elka Fabiana Aparecida; Paiva,Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira; Frazão,Jussara Ellen Morais; Santos,Fernanda Helena de Souza; Carneiro,Leandro Flávio.
The cultivation of the calla lily, despite its importance in the floriculture sector, is still limited due to the lack of knowledge of basic production techniques such as development and dry mass accumulation. These techniques facilitate more appropriate management, especially regarding the application of fertilizers, providing better nutrients utilization and greater yields. Thus, this study was aimed at evaluating the growth and development of calla lily plants, establishing growth curves according to dry mass accumulation. Acclimatized and micropropagated calla lily plantlets were grown in plastic pots containing coconut fiber as a substrate and fertilized with a modified formula of Malavolta. Treatments consisted of assessments at intervals of 30 days...

Muraro,Daniel; Negrelle,Raquel R.B; Cuquel,Francine L; Anacleto,Adilson.
The results of a study of the impact of market management on the ornamental plants supply chain are presented, using Curitiba, which is considered the most expressive flower market in Paraná State, as a case study. The flower market in Paraná ranks fifth in Brazil in terms of the volume of commercialization and sixth in terms of per capita consumption. However, this State, which initiated floriculture activities nearly 50 years ago, does not have a prominent florist supply pole, although adequate environmental conditions for such activities exist in Paraná. Therefore, to obtain more information about and a better understanding of the determinants of this scenario, a literature review and interviews were conducted. The flower shops structure and operations...

Fertigation and growing media for production of anthurium cut flower Horticultura Brasileira
Cuquel,Francine Lorena; Polack,Simone W; Favaretto,Nerilde; Possamai,João Carlos.
Anthurium andraeanum flowers quality and productivity depend on the fertilizer, and the growing media used. Most Brazilian anthurium growers use to prepare their growing media, but they do not realize that the low quality and productivity might come from an inadequate mix that they are using. So, the objective was to determine yield and flower quality of anthurium plants grown in different growing media and fertilizations. 'Eidibel' anthurium plants were grown in: a) pine bark + composted organic matter (1:1); b) wood shavings + composted organic matter (1:1); c) growing media usually utilized by the grower where this study was developed (a mixture of soil, coal residue and composted cow manure). Four fertigation solutions were applied weekly during eleven...
