Cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum), a specie native to Amazonia, has been planted commercially in Brazil to satisfy the demand for the flavorful juice obtained from the pulp around its seeds. The trees are notorious for low and irregular fruit production. Data gathered over two seasons from trees in a germplasm collection in Pará, Brazil, showed that some of them fruited more regularly than others. Differences in fruit production correlated to differences in flower production. Tree-to-tree variation in flower production, fruit production, and consistency of both over time suggest considerable scope for improving yields by selection. El estudio tiene el propósito de analizar las actividades productivas en familias rurales del municipio de Zinacantán, Chiapas. Se fundamenta en áreas de participación del desarrollo comunitario.La metodología utilizada incluye técnicas de investigación cualitativa: observación directa y participativa, entrevistas a informantes claves y opinión de encuestados; la información se obtuvo a través de un cuestionario aplicado a 92 jefes de familia. El análisis de datos se realizó con estadística descriptiva apoyada en el programa Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS), distribución de frecuencias, coeficientes de correlación de Pearson, comparación de medias, medidas de tendencia central y dispersión. Nectar and pollen production in pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) Rev. Bras. Bot.

Cucurbitaceae species depend on pollination by honey bees for fruit production. The overall objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of C. pepo for pollen and nectar production, that could help maintain colonies placed in the field. Plants of pumpkin were cultivated in field, in 1996 and 1997. Before anthesis, male flowers were covered to prevent visits by bees and other insects. After anthesis the flowers were uncovered and the following parameters were evaluated: 1) nectar production; 2) total sugar concentration in the nectar; 3) nectar replacement; and 4) production of pollen and flowers during the crop cycle.
