On the experimental study of the flow around a fishing net ArchiMer
Pichot, Geraldine; Germain, Gregory; Priour, Daniel.
Selectivity of fishing gears like trawls is obviously conditioned by the fish behaviour but also by the net and the flow. As well, flow may affect fish behaviour. With the aim of a better understanding of the flow in presence of a net and a catch, we suggest, through the experimental study below, to determine and to analyze the flow over a rigid cod-end in two configurations: with a closed and an open net entrance. Trials took place in a free surface flume tank and the flow characteristics were determined from velocity measurements obtained by laser velocimetry (inside, outside and through the meshes of the stiff cod-end). The experimental device, the measures and their analyzes are given here.

Analysis of random nonlinear water waves: the Stokes-Woodward technique ArchiMer
Elfouhaily, Tanos; Joelson, Maminirina; Guignard, Stéphan; Branger, Hubert; Thompson, Donald; Chapron, Bertrand; Vandemark, Douglas.
A generalization of the Woodward's theorem is applied to the case of random signals jointly modulated in amplitude and frequency. This yields the signal spectrum and a rather robust estimate of the bispectrum. Furthermore, higher order statistics that quantify the amount of energy in the signal due to nonlinearities, e.g., wave-wave interaction in the case of water waves, can be inferred. Considering laboratory wind generated water waves, comparisons between the presented generalization and more standard techniques allow to extract the spectral energy due to nonlinear wave-wave interactions. It is shown that our analysis extends the domain of standard spectral estimation techniques from narrow-band to broad-band processes.

Wave and current flume tank of IFREMER at Boulogne-sur-mer. Description of the facility and its equipment ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Facq, Jean-valery; Bacchetti, Thomas.
This document presents the wave and current flume tank of IFREMER at Boulogne-sur-mer. This facility is unique in Europe because of its size and capabilities. The experimental working section is 4m wide by 2m deep and 18m long. Two pumps with a total power of 500kW enable the 700m3 of fresh water to move with a maximum velocity of 2.2m/s. Wave can be superimposed to the current using a dedicated wavemaker. It can be located at an upstream of downstream surface position in order to generate wave propagating with or against the current. Additional specific experimental devices are used in the laboratory as well, such as: Laser Doppler Velocimeter, Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter, Particles Image Velocimetry, underwater and aerial Qualysis Motion Tracking system...

Modélisation et analyse numérique du couplage filet-écoulement hydrodynamique dans une poche de chalut ArchiMer
Pichot, Geraldine.
We are interested in the numerical simulation of the catch process at the end part of a trawl. The study of previous works emphasizes the lack of a convincing flow model. The need of a physical understanding of the flow leads us to perform experimental campaigns around a rigid cod-end net model, whose results are given in the manuscript. We propose a model based on the Navier-Stokes/Brinkman equations coupled to an equation for the turbulent kinetic energy by the means of an eddy viscosity, with appropriate boundary conditions. Existence of a weak solution to our coupled problem is proved in dimension 2. Then, we present the axisymmetric code we developed, called SeaNet. We set the parameters of the model and validate the code by comparison with the...

Note on the POD-based time interpolation from successive PIV images ArchiMer
Bouhoubeiny, Elkhadim; Druault, Philippe.
To enhance the temporal resolution of the PIV measurements of pseudo-periodic turbulent flows, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) has been previously used to time interpolate PIV database. In this note, it is demonstrated that such POD interpolation is equivalent to the classical mathematical interpolation when dealing with the whole POD eigenfunctions, since POD is a linear transform. In fact, the POD-based time interpolation is only valid for the large scale structures of the flow. The advantage of using POD procedure resides in its efficiency in extracting the dominant flow structures. In this sense, other interpolation methods such as turbulent filtering procedures could provide similar results. To cite this article: E. Bouhoubeiny, P Druault, C R....

Numerical simulation of water flow around a rigid fishing net ArchiMer
Lewandowski, Roger; Pichot, Geraldine.
This paper is devoted to the simulation of the flow around and inside a rigid axisymmetric net. We describe first how experimental data have been obtained. We show in detail the modelization. The model is based on a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence model penalized by a term based on the Brinkman law. At the out-boundary of the computational box, we have used a "ghost" boundary condition. We show that the corresponding variational problem has a solution. Then the numerical scheme is given and the paper finishes with numerical simulations compared with the experimental data. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
