Towards the Development of Innovative Strategies for Traditional Food Chains in the EU AgEcon

Organizations no longer compete as independent entities, but as chains (Christopher, 1998; Cox, 1999; Lambert, Cooper, 2000). Consequently, chain strategies became more important in creating competitive advantage (Vickery et al., 2003; Gunasekaran et al., 2004). Despite the growing recognition of the importance of chain strategies, many chains active in the agri‐business sector still face difficulties in developing common chain strategies and implementing them collaboratively to generate additional mutual gains and savings. Regional Fishery Management Organization as Games in Coalitional Form AgEcon

This paper examines how a Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) might successfully achieve effective control of a high seas fishery in the context of partial cooperation. We analyse the feasible allocations of property rights among members of a given RFMO and coalitions of potential entrants. We demonstrate that the modified Shapley value is an appropriate device for the division of the gains from both partial and full cooperations.

Impacto del programa Juntos sobre nutrición temprana AgEcon

Desde fines del 2005, el programa Juntos brinda transferencias monetarias condicionadas a los hogares ubicados en los distritos pobres del Perú. En el año 2010, había alrededor de 420 mil hogares beneficiados. Si bien se evidencian mejoras en los indicadores nutricionales de los niños afiliados al programa, la pregunta de la investigación es: ¿hasta qué punto estas mejoras serían consecuencia de Juntos? Esta pregunta es válida dado que durante el periodo de estudio existe una tendencia clara hacia la reducción en los niveles de desnutrición crónica a nivel nacional. The Australian Centre of International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has sponsored several research projects with the aim of increasing the efficiency of straw utilisation by cattle and buffaloes in some Australian and Indian situations. Pricing Games in Poultry Markets: The Cases of Eggs in Australia and Chicken in Canada AgEcon

Given the increasing concentration in numerous markets recent interest in market structure and performance has grown dramatically. The empirical research revolves around theories of industrial organization and non-cooperative game theory. Research in this area uses participant strategic action not only to define market structure but also participant conduct. In the Australian egg market and Canadian fresh chicken market we reject the more competitive assumption of Bertrand-Nash behavior in favor of Stackelberg/leader-follower relationships. In Australia Pace Farms emerges as the industry leader while in Canada generic product overwhelmingly controls the market.

The Determinants of Survival of Spanish Consumers Fronting the BSE Crisis AgEcon

The impact of food scares on meat consumption has been traditionally investigated by estimating food demand systems using aggregated time series. Only a few have considered micro data but none of them has tried to quantify consumers’ reaction to food scares and the speed of such reactions. In this study we apply duration analysis techniques with the aim of analysing the effect of different explanatory variables on both the risk of reducing beef consumption and the timing of this reduction. Our results suggest that the maximum hazard occurs during the few months after the occurrence of the food crisis and then the reducing consumption hazard tend to diminish. Imperfect information can lead to market failure and be an external factor impacting managers of agribusiness firms. A matrix method approach to content analysis was conducted by independent judges based upon established typologies. HETEROSCEDASTICITY IN BROILER MEAT EXPENDITURE PATTERN ESTIMATION AgEcon

This study presents the empirical results of estimating the household broiler meat expenditure pattern in the western region using the 1977-78 United States Department of Agriculture Nationwide Food Consumption Survey. The effects of assuming homoscedasticity and heteroscedasticity in the tobit model on resulting estimates are discussed in terms of estimated coefficients, marginal effects, and elasticities. Based on the strength of the sample data, the results suggest that specification of the homoscedastic model should be rejected in favor of the heteroscedastic model, implying that the validity of homoscedasticity should not be routinely accepted without testing when applying tobit procedure to analyze survey data.

A myriad of local, state, and federal laws and regulations exist with the intent to assure consumers a "safe" food supply. This paper addresses some of the economic aspects of federal food safety laws and regulations. A brief summary of federal food safety legislation and programs is offered, with some assessment of issues which impact on the performance of these programs. Finally, broad alternatives to current federal programs are enumerated along with each alternative's potential consequences in economic terms.

Fat Chance: Modelling the Socio-Economic Determinants of Dietary Fat Intake in China AgEcon

Quantile Regression methods have much to offer the investigation of the determinants of dietary intake. Dietary inadequacy or excess occurs at the tails of nutrient and food intakes, and it seems intuitive that intake responses in these areas will differ from elsewhere along the intake distribution. We apply quantile regression to examine the drivers of a key aspect of dietary health, fat density of energy intake in China. The sample of 2612 individuals between the ages of 20 and 45 is derived from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Improved inputs use and productivity in Uganda’s maize sub-sector AgEcon

This paper used the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) data set of 2005/06 to examine the productivity of improved inputs used by smallholder maize farmers in Uganda. Yield and gross profit functions were estimated with the stochastic frontier model. Results revealed a significant effect improved inputs use on yield but not gross profit. Moreover, farmers who planted recycled seed (of improved variety) without fertilizer obtained lower yield but the highest gross profit. Furthermore, if the opportunity cost of own land and labour inputs in maize production were imputed, overall, farmers made economic losses. Alternative to Disincentive Rice Producer Prices in Madagascar: Case Study in Alaotra Prefecture and Bongolava Prefecture AgEcon

This study identifies the reasons for low producer prices of rice that have not covered its production costs for many years in Madagascar. The following points will be discussed: the farmers’ marketing conditions and the rural rice market structure, including the functions of each intervening trader preceding rice distribution in urban centers. The study also assesses current functions of the agricultural farmer cooperative: an organization expected to enable the establishment of fair trade in the domestic rice market. Contractual Choice and Food Safety Strategy: Some Empirical Findings in Italian Poultry Sector AgEcon

The analysis of contract choice is here related to the contracting nature of the hybrid governance structures. The approach of the empirical analysis is concerned with the transaction between farmers and processor in poultry supply chains and it is based upon a choice experiment to estimate the marginal values of contract attributes. Final remarks take into account the role of contract attributes in ensuring the degree of food safety and suggest a tentative organizational explanation of the degree of safety supplied. What Affects Consumption Patterns of Organic and Conventional Products? AgEcon

Consumers show an increased interest in organic food today and a willingness to pay premium for organic products. In addition to price, changing attitudes and beliefs about food quality affect food choice. This article analyses the impact of attitudes, quality characteristics and socio-demographics on consumption of organic and conventional pork, potatoes and milk. The concept of ‘perceived quality’ provides the theoretical background. The data come from a consumer survey conducted in Germany in 2004 (n=260). An ordered logit model was used for analysing the data. We observe clear differences in consumers’ use of certain quality characteristics as they perceive and evaluate conventional and organic fresh foods.

CONSUMER INTENTIONS OF BUYING POULTRY MEAT UNDER PERCEIVED BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL OR TECHNOLOGICAL RISK IN FINLAND AgEcon

The study focuses on various types of food safety risks: biological (zoonoses), chemical (chemical treatment of the meat) and technological (use of genetically modified feed). The emphasis was on how the perceived risks affect the purchase intentions in the case of broiler meat. In the case of each risk products the attitude-level variables had importance in explaining the buying intentions. The heterogeneity of the respondents regarding the purchase intentions of risk products was analysed by latent class logistic regression that included all three risk products.
