Einsatz von Nebenprodukten in der biologischen Milchviehfütterung zur Verbesserung der Lebensmittelkonversionseffizienz Organic Eprints
Ertl, Paul; Knaus, Wilhelm.
Dairy cows are very efficient in converting fibrous forages into nutritious foods for humans. However, when fed potentially human-edible feeds, such as grains and pulses, dairy cows show very low efficiency in terms of net food production. In this debate, by-products are often mentioned as high quality feeds with reduced human-edible fractions for dairy cows. The aim of this feeding trial was therefore to evaluate the effect of a full substitution of a common concentrate mixture (COM) with a mixture including solely industrial by-products (BP) on milk production, feed intake, and the edible feed conversion ratio (eFCR) in organic dairy production. Cows receiving the BP mixture showed higher intakes of fibre fractions and ether extract, while starch intake...

Organic Trout Ova/Fry also available from Danish Hatcheries Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
One year ahead of the deadline for implementation of complete organic aquaculture life cycle - organic ova/fry is available from danish hatcheries.According to the EU Regulation on Organic Aquaculture, the fish production shall exclusively be based on organic fry from 2016. Particularly, in organic farming, medication is only allowed within very strict limits. Therefore, the robustness of the fry to diseases is crucial. Especially, this concerns the most serious trout fry disease in Danish aquaculture, Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS). The robustness of the fry seems to be related to larval developmental rate and to the dietary content of specific Ω-3 fatty acids (HUFAs). Therefore a recently launched project Robustfish are going to perform stress and...

Integrated larvae production for feed in organic egg production Organic Eprints
The project objectives are: - to develop and demonstrate a robust system to produce a new organic feed supplement consisting of live insect larvae with an ideal amino acid composition. The project provides a sustainable way to meet the requirement from EU for organic farms (100% organic feed by 2012) and improved animal welfare in poultry flocks. - to investigate the effect of larvae growth on the microbiology of the manure, including selected pathogens and human zoonotic bacteria to assess the microbiological safety to the system, - to investigate a prebiotic effect in the digestive system of poultry, - to demonstrate that the integrated ON-farm system is ideal for treating animal manure through composting with larvae and thereby recycle...

Locally produced legumes and seaweed. Sustainable protein sources for a self-sufficient European animal production? Organic Eprints
Novoa-Garrido, Margarita; Bay-Larsen, Ingrid; Heckendorn, Felix; Weisbjerg, Martin R.; Molina-Alcaide, Eduarda; Lind, Vibeke.
The animal feeding industry is looking for new local sources of high quality protein in order to reduce import and ensure sustainable and environmental friendly animal production systems. Local legumes and seaweeds may be alternative sources of protein. We present in this paper the background for the ongoing Norwegian Research Council project Legumes and seaweeds as alternative protein sources for sheep (AltPro), which aims to investigate the suitability and potential of legumes and seaweeds as new and underutilized protein sources in sheep diets. The project addresses several critical aspects for the future development of the agriculture industry in Norway applicable to other European countries from an integrated social and natural scientific approach:...
