Beurteilung der Fruchtqualität beim Apfel im Rahmen des EU-Projekts Hidras Organic Eprints
Kellerhals, Markus; Eigenmann, Christian.
The EU project Hidras (High Quality Disease Resistant Apples for a sustainable agriculture, QLK5-CT-2002-01-01492) aims to identify genetic factors controlling apple fruit quality with the objective of increasing the acceptability of disease resistant apples. At Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil (ACW) we are performing ex-pert panel tests and consumer tests. The consumer inquiry during the public fair BEA 2005, end of April 2005 in Bern, Switzerland, resulted in comprehensive information on consumption trends in apple for dif-ferent age groups. This work is coordinated with partners in Poland and Belgium. All the age groups consid-ered flavour, juiciness and firmness as very important quality criteria for apples. The preference of apples to other fruit such...

No effect of the farming system (organic/conventional) on the bioavailability of apple (Malus domestica Bork., cultivar Golden Delicious) polyphenols in healthy men: a comparative study Organic Eprints
Stracke, Berenike A.; Rüfer, Corinna E.; Bub, Achim; Seifert, Stephanie; Weibel, Franco; Kunz, Clemens; Watzl, Bernhard.
Background The organic food sales have been increasing during the recent years. It has been hypothesised that organically grown fruits are healthier based on their higher content of phytochemicals. However, data on the bioavailability of phytochemicals from organically or conventionally produced plant foods are scarce. Methods Two human intervention studies were performed to compare the bioavailability of polyphenols in healthy men after ingestion of apples from different farming systems. The administered apples were grown organically and conventionally under defined conditions and characterised regarding their polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity. No significant differences in the polyphenol content and the antioxidant capacity from the...

Can a peach production in organic farming be requalified with polyphenols ? A comparative case study in Rhone-Alpes Region (France) Organic Eprints
Fauriel, Joël; Bellon, Stéphane; Plénet, Daniel; Amiot, Marie-Jo.
Peach production in the Rhône-Alps region is increasingly challenged by mediterranean European regions. A possible regional strategy would consist in the development of qualification signs. A significant part of the peach production is already labelled (CCP, Red Label, Organic). How such labels relate with quality attributes at field level ? Can polyphenols be considered as an asset in a re-qualification process of peach production? To contribute to these issues, we present preliminary results derived from field work in Rhône-Alps. The study was conducted on 12 orchards of yellow peach (cv Spring Lady) in farms. 10 orchards were managed according to the above mentioned specifications while 2 were cultivated without specifications. Farmers practices...

Effect of Consumption of Organically and Conventionally Produced Apples on Antioxidant Activity and DNA Damage in Humans Organic Eprints
Briviba, Karlis; Stracke, Berenicke A.; Rüfer, Corinna E.; Watzl, Bernhard; Weibel, Franco P.; Bub, Achim.
The present study was performed to compare the effects on antioxidant activity and on DNA damage of organic and conventionally produced apples grown under controlled conditions in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Six healthy volunteers consumed either organically or conventionally grown apples (Golden Delicious, 1000 g) from two neighboring commercial farms in a double-blinded, randomized, cross-over study. The average content of total identified and quantified polyphenols in the organically and conventionally produced apples was 308 and 321 µg/g fresh weight, respectively. No statistically significant differences in the sum of phenolic compounds or in either of the polyphenol classes were found between the agricultural methods. Consumption of neither...

Effects of the drying technique on the retention of phytochemicals in conventional and organic plum (Prunus domestica L.) Organic Eprints
Vangdal, E; Picchi, V; Fibiani, M; Lo Scalzo, Roberto.
Plums contain high levels of hydroxycinnamates (neo-chlorogenic acid, Neo-CGA), anthocyanins (ATH) and ascorbic acid. The drying process influences their phytochemical content and plum cultivars are known to have different phytochemical retention after drying, but little data exists regarding to possible differences between conventional (CONV) and organic (ORG) plums. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical content in three different CONV and ORG plum cultivars (Jubileum, Reeves and Victoria) after freeze drying (FD), conventional oven drying (OD) and solar drying (SD). The three cultivars responded differently to the methods of drying. Notably, Jubileum decreased its ATH mostly when subjected to OD while its Neo-CGA content was mostly...

Weibel, Franco P.; Treutter, Dieter; Graf, Ursula; Häseli, Andi.
In a 3 years lasting field study with the ‘Golden Delicious’ cultivar, we compared fruits of 5 pairs of organic/integrated fruit farms. The orchards were similar in microclimate, soil conditions and planting system. To assess inner fruit quality we investigated at the beginning and at the end of cold storage: (i) standard parameters (firmness, sugar, malic acid., mineral content); (ii) sensorial quality by panel tests; (iii) health related components (23 phenolic compounds, nutritional fibres; vitamins); and (v) fruit «vitality quality» by holistic approaches (crystallisation in copper chloride, self degradation tests, feeding preference tests with laboratory rats). The most significant differences were found in year one of the study, and were by tendency...

Untersuchungen und Prozessbegleitung zur Praxiseinführung von Heißwassertauchanlagen im ökologischen Kernobstanbau Organic Eprints
Maxin, P.; Klopp, K.; Fieger-Metag, N..
In general, organic grown apples (Malus x domestica Borkh.) are not treated with chemical fungicides to prevent storage decay and these fruits may suffer up to 30% decay during storage. Preliminary experiments had shown that hot water dipping of apples may be an alternative. To inhibit Gloeosporium rot (Pezicula alba, P. malicortis) water temperature may be of about 50°C and dipping time from 60 sec up to 180 sec. The present investigation was conducted to test different ranges of temperatures and dipping time periods in different apple cultivars over a three year investigation. The objective was to determinate the suitable hot water treatment that prevents decay incidence and maintains fruit quality (firmness, scale symptoms). For the reduction of post...

Toxicidade e produção de maçãs no sul do Brasil. Organic Eprints
