Deliverable 1.4 (a) Journal article. How important is country-of-origin for organic food consumers? A review of the literature and suggestions for future research. SOMDwIT Organic Eprints
Thøgersen, John; Pedersen, Susanne; Paternoga, Maria; Schwendel, Eva; Aschemann-Witzel, Jessica.
Purpose: This paper reviews the literature on the country-of-origin (COO) effect in the context of organic food and develops suggestions for further research in this area. Research has investigated COO effects and consumer responses to organic food, but there is little research on the combination of the two. Design/methodology/approach: A narrative review of two research streams and their intersection, forming the basis for the development of a research agenda. Findings: There are few studies analysing the possible interaction between the effects of organic and COO on consumers’ food preferences and choices. In general, COO seems to lose impact when other quality cues are salient. This suggests a lower impact of COO for organic than for conventional...

Deliverable 2.1. and 3.1., Literature reviews, SOMDwIT project Organic Eprints
Thøgersen, John; Paternoga, Maria; Schwendel, Eva; Pedersen, Susanne.
The purpose of the SOMDwIT project is to explore the influence of “made-in-Denmark” relatively to competing countries of origin on how organic food products are evaluated across quality dimensions that consumers perceive as important (both organic food in general and specific product categories) at important and emerging markets (Germany and France, China and Thailand). The primary research in the project is based on a thorough review of the state-of-the-art regarding organic food consumption (D 2.1) and country of origin effects (D3.1). Since the two areas are closely linked in this project, we have made one review covering both deliverables.

Applicability of organic milk indicators to the authentication of processed products. Organic Eprints
Molkentin, Joachim.
The validity of established threshold values for the analytical authentication (stable isotopes and fatty acids) of organic drinking milk in Germany was determined for more strongly processed organic dairy products (n = 56). Milk fat extracted from both soft and semi-hard cheeses, butter, cream, sour cream, buttermilk, yoghurt and low-fat milk always possessed an alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3w3) content above the minimum level of 0.50% and a stable isotope ratio of carbon (delta13C) below the maximum level of -26.5‰ required for organic milk. Noncompliant results were obtained for whey as well as both Italian ice creams and cheeses. Analyses of German cream cheese and curd lipids revealed that 7 out of 39 samples did not comply with the two thresholds. An...

Food Quality Strategies for enhancing organic food quality Organic Eprints
Stopes, Christopher.
This Research Topic Review aims to summarise the available knowledge on strategies for enhancing organic food quality. The Review will provide organic advisers with a better understanding of the differences between organic and conventional food quality so that they can support the development of organic farming systems and supply chains that deliver better quality organic food. The Review takes a broad definition of food quality and on the appropriate methods for determining food quality. However, the focus is on the factors that are more or less within the control of the farmer and the rest of the supply chain, and that directly impact on the appreciation or the intrinsic quality of the food as presented to, and eaten by the consumer. The specific...

Personal determinants of organic food consumption: a review Organic Eprints
Aertsens, Joris; Verbeke, Wim; Mondelaers, Koen; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
Purpose - A lot of literature is available that discusses personal determinants of organic food consumption. However different models and determinants are used in the literature. This paper aims to provide an overview, within a framework linking Schwartz' values theory and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Also it seeks to focus on the importance of affective attitude, emotions, personal norm, involvement and uncertainty related to organic food consumption. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is based on secondary data sources, namely the literature concerning personal determinants of organic food consumption. Findings - Both the values theory and the theory of planned behaviour have been referred to as relevant theories for better...
