Productive performance of Holstein calves finished in feedlot or pasture Anais da ABC (AABC)
DIAS,ANA MARIA O.; MENEZES,LUIS F.G. DE; PARIS,WAGNER; SANTOS,PRISCILA V. DOS; BIESEK,RONALDO R.; MAFIOLETTI,RENAN D.; MARCHESAN,RENATO.
ABSTRACT The use of animals from dairy farms is an alternative to meat production since it provides an increment of total income for farmers. This study aims to evaluate the performance of Holstein calves finished in two feeding systems (feedlot or pasture). Forty-three animals with 58 days old and 57 kg were divided in two treatments: 23 animals finished in feedlot with corn silage plus concentrate based on corn and soybean meal (40:60); 20 animals kept in cultivated pastures according to the period of the year: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum) with supplementation with the same feedlot-concentrate at 1% body weight. Animals were slaughtered with 200 kg. Dry matter and nutrient intake were determined, with the...

Comparison of Four Techniques to Estimate Forage Intake by Rams Grazing on a Panicum coloratum L. Pasture Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ferri,Carlos   M; Stritzler,Néstor  P; Brizuela,Miguel  A; Pagella,Horacio   J.
The estimation of daily feed intake is important in the determination of animal production The objective of this experiment was to compare measurements of animal forage intake obtained by the use of four techniques: pre- and post-grazing difference in standing forage mass, total daily feces collection in combination with in vitro diet digestibility, total daily feces collection in combination with diet digestibility estimated by the fecal nitrogen index and the n-alkane technique. The experiment was carried out on a stockpiled Panicum coloratum L. pasture during two growing seasons. The treatments for the first season comprised standing forage mass accumulated after mid-October, mid-January and mid-February mechanical harvest to 8-cm stubble. In the second...

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a marker to estimate fecal output in sheep Ciência Rural
Peres,Mylena Taborda Piquera; Batista,Rafael; Twardowski,Tehane de Souza; Ribeiro Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes; Monteiro,Alda Lúcia Gomes.
ABSTRACT: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an external marker used to estimate fecal output based on forage intake of grazing ruminants; however, its use as marker for grazing sheep still needs attention. In the present study the TiO2 role to estimate fecal output of sheep grazing annual ryegrass was tested. Two essays were conducted in sequence using the same forage and animals. Six lacaune lambs were housed in metabolic cages. Lambs were administered 1 g TiO2 in a single (at 8:30 am, essay 1), or in two daily doses (at 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, essay 2). In both essays the TiO2 administration was followed by a 7-day period to stabilize the fecal excretion of the marker and then by a 5-day period for total collection of feces. Observed and TiO2-based estimated fecal...

Nutritional performance of cattle grazing on low-quality tropical forage supplemented with nitrogenous compounds and/or starch R. Bras. Zootec.
Lazzarini,Ísis; Detmann,Edenio; Paulino,Mário Fonseca; Valadares Filho,Sebastião de Campos; Valadares,Rilene Ferreira Diniz; Oliveira,Fabrício Albani; Silva,Poliana Teixeira da; Reis,William Lima Santiago dos.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of protein and/or starch supplementation on the nutritional performance of cattle grazing on low-quality tropical forage. Five crossbred steers (Holstein × Gyr) with an average body weight (BW) of 397 kg that were fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulae were used. The animals were kept in individual signal-grass (Bracharia decumbens) paddocks. Five treatments were evaluated: 1 - control (without supplementation); 2 - supplementation with 1 g of crude protein (CP) per kg of BW; 3 - supplementation with 2.5 g of starch per kg of BW; 4 - supplementation with CP and starch as described for treatments 2 and 3; and 5 - supplementation as described for treatment 4 but replacing the corn starch with a...

Forage intake and botanical composition of feed for cattle fed Brachiaria/legume mixtures Scientia Agricola
Macedo,Robert; Tarré,Ricardo Martinez; Ferreira,Elvino; Rezende,Claudia de Paula; Pereira,José Marques; Cadisch,Georg; Rouws,Janaina Ribeiro Costa; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Urquiaga,Segundo; Boddey,Robert Michael.
A key contribution to study the cycling of nutrients in soil/plant/animal systems is the evaluation of the consumption of forage and their nutrients by cattle. The objective of this study was to test techniques to evaluate faecal production, in vitro digestibility, forage consumption and the proportion of legume in the acquired diet. Five Zebu steer calves were confined and fed five diets of different combinations of Brachiaria dictyoneura and Desmodium ovalifolium. All quantities of faeces were collected per animal and these values were found to compare favourably with those derived from using the chromium oxide technique. In vitro digestibility ranged from 7 to 10% higher than the actual in vivo digestibility. Faecal samples from steers fed with diets...
