| Natural disturbances are important components of ecosystem dynamics. Large scale disturbances produced by volcanoes, have been poorly studied because of their low frequency, the lack of baseline studies due to their unpredictability, the impossibility of replication, and the difficulty of conducting long-term studies to monitor ecosystem recovery. The recent eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex (June 2011), which produced an ash fall covering 24 million ha of Patagonia, provides a unique opportunity of studying this type of disturbance in areas with baseline data. | As comunidades de Formicidae (Insecta, Hymenoptera) foram estudadas em fragmentos de floresta semidecídua inseridos no bioma Mata Atlântica medindo de 2,99 a 45,5 ha na região do Alto do Rio Grande, Minas Gerais, Brasil. As formigas foram coletadas em 15 amostras de serapilheira de 1 m² em cada fragmento, usando o método de extrator de Winkler. Cada amostra teve distância mínima de 50 m uma da outra. Um total de 142 espécies de formigas foi distribuído entre 40 gêneros, 23 tribos e 10 subfamílias. As comunidades amostradas mostraram uma alta riqueza e altos valores no índice de diversidade. O tamanho da área dos fragmentos não influenciou na riqueza de espécies de formigas. |

| As comunidades de formigas que vivem em fragmentos de Mata Atlântica rodeados por um ecossistema urbano bem desenvolvido, foram investigadas. Avaliou-se a riqueza, a freqüência de ocorrência das espécies bem como a similaridade entre três áreas da cidade de São Paulo: Parque da Previdência (PP), Reserva Florestal "Armando Salles de Oliveira" (CUASO) e Horto Oswaldo Cruz (HOC). Foram colocadas armadilhas do tipo "pitfall" em locais onde não ocorre visitação pública, durante uma semana, nos meses de março, junho, setembro e dezembro de 2001. Em todos os fragmentos foram coletadas 79 espécies de formigas, pertencentes a nove subfamílias e 32 gêneros. A subfamília Myrmicinae e os gêneros Pheidole e Hypoponera foram os mais ricos. | As respostas das comunidades de formigas às mudanças ambientais de fragmentos florestais para agroecossistemas (café ou pastagem) foram avaliadas na região sul do Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Neste trabalho, avaliaram-se as interações entre fragmentos florestais e os dois agroecossistemas mais típicos do sudeste do Brasil: monocultivo de café a pleno sol e pastagem introduzida. A comunidade de formigas foi amostrada em cinco áreas de cada agroecossistema, dentro de fragmentos florestais adjacentes a estes e nas bordas entre os dois sistemas. | O formicida em forma de isca granulada tem sido largarmente utilizado pela sua praticidade, pois dispensa o uso de equipamentos para sua aplicacao e pode ser colocado ao lado dos carreadores, sem necessidade de se localizar o sauveiro. No entanto, a presenca de chuvas e mesmo a alta umidade prejudicam a eficiência desse produto, fator limitante do uso de formicidas em forma de isca. Por isso, foi desenvolvido, no CNPSD, um tipo de porta-iscas, de confeccao simples, baixo custo e de uso aprovado porque, mesmo no periodo chuvoso, nao ha perda de iscas por emboloramento. |

| Crematogaster ants use their contact venoms to compete with other ants. Although those venoms are used primarily as repellent and toxic secretions, they may have other functions. The present study aimed to test the antibacterial property of abdominal venom of three neotropical Crematogaster ant species (C. distans, C. pygmaea and C. rochai) against gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and gram-positive (Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. | The genus Pachycondyla is a large group of ants in the Ponerini tribe, known mostly from tropical and subtropical regions. Pachycondyla sennaarensis, the so-called Samsum ant in the Middle East, is distributed throughout the African tropics, Arabian Peninsula and Iran, where it is responsible for many cases of insect-induced dermal lesions and systemic reactions in humans. Populations of P. sennaarensis were studied in two regions of Iran and some aspects of their biology, ecology and medical importance are herein presented. | In het boek De wespen en mieren van Nederland uit 2004 wordt een overzicht gegeven van de kennis van de Nederlandse mierenfauna. In dit artikel worden de nieuwe inzichten samengevat. Zo zijn maar liefst zes nieuwe soorten voor ons land te melden en van diverse andere soorten is interessante nieuwe informatie beschikbaar. Zo blijkt de bekende bosmier Formica polyctena te hybridiseren met F. rufa en wordt daarom gesynonymiseerd. De langschubmier Lasius bicornis blijkt niet uitgestorven. Het is opmerkelijk dat over zo’n goed bekende diergroep als de mieren nog zoveel nieuws te ontdekken valt. |

| Ants in roadside verges on the Veluwe: species richness and recommendations for management (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Highway verges in the Veluwe region contain some well developed nutrient poor plant communities, like grasslands, grey hair grass vegetation and heather vegetation. These places provide a good habitat for ants. The past five years, we made an inventory of the ants in these road verges. We found 35 species, which is more than 50% of the Dutch ant fauna and approximately 80% of the species known from the Veluwe. | The survey and monitoring of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) The goal of this paper is to encourage the use of ants in monitoring programs and biodiversity surveys. Monitoring is restricted to ground-dwelling ants, because the sexual forms are too erratic in occurrence. For monitoring of ant populations the tube-method is best suited. The tubes are filled with sweet fruity wine and placed in the ground. Per habitat type ten tubes are placed in a row, ten metres apart. For surveys several, partly complementary, methods are used. These are described and some results are given in tables. It has to be stressed that all these methods are suitable for qualitative analysis only. In table 3 a list of species per ecotype is given. |
