Detection of free gas and gas hydrate based on 3D seismic data and cone penetration testing: An example from the Nigerian Continental Slope ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Voisset, Michel; Marsset, Tania; Vernant, Antoine-mathieu; Cauquil, E; Colliat, J; Curinier, V.
We present a new method to characterize free gas, gas hydrates and carbonate concretions occurrence which are considered as high-risk factors for sub-sea developments in the Niger delta. This method is based on the combination of 3D seismic data to the geotechnical site characterizations using piezocone CPTU tests (Cone Penetration Test with additional measurement of the pore water pressure). A special processing of the 3D seismic data has enabled the determination of the interval compressional velocity. Using the effective-medium theory, velocity anomalies (negative and positive) within the first 15 m were translated in gas hydrate and free gas distribution. The calibration of the P wave velocity anomalies was done thanks to in-situ geotechnical testing...

La géomorphologie des fonds marins et la présence d’hydrates de gaz contrôlent les émissions de gaz dans la Mer Noire au large de la Roumanie ArchiMer

The Romanian sector of the Black Sea deserves attention because the Danube deep-sea fan is one of the largest sediment depositional systems worldwide and is considered the world's most isolated sea, the largest anoxic water body on the planet and a unique energy-rich sea. Due to the high sediment accumulation rate, presence of organic matter and anoxic conditions, the Black sea sediments offshore the Danube delta is rich in gas and thus shows Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSR). The cartography of the BSR over the last 20 years, exhibits its widespread occurrence, indicative of extensive development of hydrate accumulations and a huge gas hydrate potential. By combining old and new datasets acquired in 2015 during the GHASS expedition, we performed a...

Cone penetration testing to assess slope stability in the 1979 Nice landslide area (Ligurian Margin, SE France) ArchiMer
Steiner, Alois; Kopf, Achim J.; Henry, Pierre; Stegmann, Sylvia; Apprioual, Ronan; Pelleau, Pascal.
In the landslide-prone area near the Nice international airport, southeastern France, an interdisciplinary approach is applied to develop realistic lithological/geometrical profiles and geotechnical/strength sub-seafloor models. Such models are indispensable for slope stability assessments using limit equilibrium or finite element methods. Regression analyses, based on the undrained shear strength (su) of intact gassy sediments are used to generate a sub-seafloor strength model based on 37 short dynamic and eight long static piezocone penetration tests, and laboratory experiments on one Calypso piston and 10 gravity cores. Significant strength variations were detected when comparing measurements from the shelf and the shelf break, with a significant drop...

Caractérisation des systèmes gaz/hydrates de gaz de la Mer Noire par imagerie sismique haute résolution remorquée en fond de mer (SYSIF) ArchiMer
Colin, Florent.
The study of marine gas hydrates in great water depths using seismic data is limited by the resolution of current acquisition systems. The acquisition of very highresolution multichannel deep-towed seismic data aims to break this limitation. Deep-towed seismic system can provide seismic data with metric vertical resolution when the proper processing sequence is employed. However, the processing of deep-towed multichannel data is challenging as the source and receivers are constantly moving with respect to each other. In the first part of this PhD project, we developed processing methods tailored to the acquisition system SYstème SIsmique de Fond (SYSIF), developed by Ifremer. The processing sequence allows vertical and lateral resolutions up to 0.65 m and...
