Most studies conducted to test the allelopathic activity of plant parts have made use of water as solvent. However, the presence of polar, water-soluble substances, such as proteins and carbohydrates, tends to hamper the purification of active compounds. In this study, we present a simple purification procedure that separates the active fraction of the extract from the undesirable substances, thus facilitating the search for active molecules through standard chromatographic methods. Aqueous leaf extracts of three Cerrado species (Caryocar brasiliense, Qualea parviflora and Eugenia dysenterica) were prepared at 5% concentration (w/v) and stored at 4ºC (crude extracts). After 24 h, these solutions were filtered and freeze-dried. The powder obtained was... |

The bovine pericardium has been used as biomaterial in developing bioprostheses. Freeze-drying is a drying process that could be used for heart valve's preservation. The maintenance of the characteristics of the biomaterial is important for a good heart valve performance. This paper describes the initial step in the development of a bovine pericardium tissue freeze-drying to be used in heart valves. Freeze-drying involves three steps: freezing, primary drying and secondary drying. The freezing step influences the ice crystal size and, consequently, the primary and secondary drying stages. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of freezing rates on the bovine pericardium tissue freeze-drying parameters. The glass transition temperature and... |

Diltiazem hydrochloride is a calcium channel blocker generally indicated for the treatment of angina and hypertension, and it is extensively metabolized due to the hepatic metabolism. Formulation of diltiazem hydrochloride into an oro-dispersible dosage form can provide fast relief with higher bioavailability. The bitter taste of the drug should be masked to formulate it in a palatable form. In the present work, an attempt was made to mask the taste by complexation technique, with a formulation into an oro-dispersible dosage form, using superdisintegrants Doshion P544, crospovidone (CP) and sodium starch glycolate (SSG). The complexes of diltiazem hydrochloride with β-CD (1:1 molar ratio) were prepared by kneading, co-evaporation, co-grounding,... |

Various protocols are currently used to study marine lipids, but there is a growing interest in working on dry samples that are easier to transport. However, reference protocols are still lacking for dry samples. In order to make recommendations on this use, lipid classes and fatty acids (FA) obtained from six analytical protocols using two different tissue states (dry vs wet) and three extraction methods (automat vs manual potter vs leaving the solvent to work on tissue) were compared. Three dry storage modes of tissue (freezer vs gas nitrogen vs dry room) during one and three months were also compared. These comparisons were made on seven marine species with different lipid profiles, including fishes, crustaceans and mollusks. Lipid classes and FA... |

Attempts to freeze-dry spermatozoa are not new. Successful conception and full-term development using freeze-dried spermatozoa were reported in the cow and rabbit prior to 1960. However, these preliminary results have not been confirmed. Spermatozoa become defective in motility after freeze-drying and are unable to fertilize eggs both in vivo and in vitro. However, in 1998, freeze-drying of mammalian spermatozoa was demonstrated without loss of genetic or reproductive potential. Freeze-dried spermatozoa support normal development when injected directly into oocytes by means of an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technique. Recent investigations of freeze-dried sperm have focused on the factors affecting freeze-drying in spermatozoa in an effort to... |
