Advertising and Retail Promotion of Washington Apples: A Structural Latent Variable Approach to Promotion Evaluation AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Gao, Xiaoming; Patterson, Paul M..
"Commodity promotion" consists of many activities, each designed to contribute to a consumer's product knowledge or influence tastes. However, both knowledge and tastes are unobservable, or latent, variables influencing demand. This paper specifies a dynamic structural model of fresh fruit demand that treats promotion and other socioeconomic variables as "causal" variables influencing these latent variables. Estimating this state-space model using a Kalman filter approach provides estimates of both the system parameters and a latent variable series. The results show that these latent effects contribute positively to apple and other fruit consumption, while reducing banana consumption.

RESTRICTIONS ON THE EFFECTS OF PREFERENCE VARIABLES IN THE ROTTERDAM MODEL AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study examines imposing and testing restrictions on preference variables in the Rotterdam model through the impacts of these variables on marginal utilities. An empirical analysis of the impact of a female labor force participation variable in a Rotterdam demand system for fresh fruit illustrates the methodology. This variable was modeled through its impact on marginal utilities via "adjusted" prices, following theoretical work by Basmann and Barten, among others. Results show that the female labor participation has negatively impacted the demands for citrus, while positively impacting the demands for other fresh fruit.

FREMONT - IAC 543: TANGERINE WITH POTENTIAL FOR THE BRAZILIAN MARKET Rev. Bras. Frutic.
PACHECO,CAMILLA DE ANDRADE; AZEVEDO,FERNANDO ALVES DE; BARROS,VERA NISHIJIMA PAES DE; CRISTOFANI-YALY,MARIÂNGELA; VERRUMA-BERNARDI,MARTA REGINA.
ABSTRACT Planting new types of tangerines is an interesting alternative for Brazilian citrus growers due to the increasing domestic market. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate a less exploited variety of tangerine, the Fremont. The physics and chemical quality of the fruit and juice (mass, peel color, juice yield, acidity, soluble solids and maturation index) was evaluated, followed by sensory testing for ranking of difference and preference to Nules clementine and Ponkan tangerine varieties. The Fremont tangerine produces fruits that meet the standards required by the Brazilian consumer market, with an appropriate mass for sale of the fresh fruit, a suitable juice yield, and early to mid-season maturation. Furthermore, et the preference, together...

Plant growth, yield and fruit quality of Clementine mandarin selections under subtropical climate in Brazil Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Silva,Simone Rodrigues da; Girardi,Eduardo Augusto; Santos,Magno Guimarães; Cantuarias-Avilés,Tatiana Eugenia; Stuchi,Eduardo Sanches.
Abstract In Brazil, few mandarin (Citrus reticulata, Blanco) cultivars are being currently exploited, limiting the availability of fresh fruit in the local market. This study was aimed to investigate the performance of 15 Clementine mandarin selections and 3 hybrids, seeking for alternative varieties for production under subtropical conditions. Fifteen Clementine selections, namely: ‘Oroval-SRA335’, ‘Tomatera-SRA535’, ‘Reina-SRA534’, ‘Bruno-SRA531’, ‘Nules-SRA389’, ‘Ragheb-SRA386’, ‘Oroval-Y45’, ‘2-Kr-Monreal’, ‘Commune-SRA88’, ‘Commune-SRA85’, ‘Caffin-SRA385’, ‘De Nules-VCR’, ‘Commune-SRA92’, ‘Clemenules-EECB128’ and ‘Marisol-EECB126’; three hybrids (‘Clemelin-IVIA335’, ‘Caçula-1’ and ‘Caçula-3’) and the standard commercial varieties ‘Ponkan’ and...

Satsuma mandarins grafted onto Swingle citrumelo for early season harvest in subtropical conditions in Brazil Bragantia
Stuchi,Eduardo Sanches; Girardi,Eduardo Augusto; Silva,Simone Rodrigues da; Cantuarias-Avilés,Tatiana; Parolin,Luiz Gustavo; Reiff,Eduardo Toller; Sempionato,Otávio Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Although Brazil is the sixth producer of mandarins in the world, fresh fruit exports are neglectable, and few cultivars are available for the domestic market. Main harvest season comprises May to November, with Ponkan mandarin and Murcott tangor representing more than 70% of the production. Therefore, there is a need for alternative early season, seedless varieties that should also be preferably resistant to Alternaria brown spot. We investigated the horticultural performance of ten selections of Satsuma mandarin in subtropical conditions in Bebedouro, northern state of São Paulo, Brazil. Clausellina, Okitsu, Unshu SRA-529, Saigon SRA-227, Panaché SRA-579, Salzara SRA-341, Miyagawa SRA-444, Kowano SRA-167, FCAV-59 and A2 60.0 selections were...
