Abstract: The current study describes a new species of Hyalella found in a natural pond at the municipality of Palmeira das Missões, located in the northwestern region of state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The new species differs from other species found in state of Rio Grande do Sul (Hyalella bonariensis, H. castroi, H. kaigang, H. imbya, H. georginae, H. gauchensis, H. montenegrinae and H. pampeana) in the type and number of setae on uropods, on telson and on the inner face of gnathopod 1. Besides, Hyalella palmeirensis is morphologically similar to H. curvispina, especially in the shape and number of setae of uropods. However, H. palmeirensis differs from H. curvispina in having only two simple setae on telson, the inner face of gnathopod 1... |

Although Cuba is the most studied Caribbean island with regard to freshwater Cladocera, our knowledge of their species composition and distribution is still limited. In this study, all available published and unpublished, reliable sources were reviewed for all records of this group of crustaceans. Thus, a revised and updated list of 70 species of the orders Ctenopoda and Anomopoda recorded for the island is here presented, including all sources of information. From the total number of records, about 32% are doubtful. Comments on these and on other selected species are included. From a biogeographical point of view, the fauna of Cuba is closely related to that of southern Mexico, and both regions have a close similarity with South America. The actual... |

From a series of biological samples collected from different freshwater environments in Costa Rica, Central America, the exotic Asian cyclopoid Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides Harada, 1931 was identified. We analyzed the morphology and appendage ornamentation of different Neotropical populations of this species, including specimens from Honduras, southeastern Mexico, and Costa Rica. We also examined Asian specimens from Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and performed a comparison of the Neotropical and Asian populations including a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The Neotropical and Asian specimens show subtle morphological variations in the antennules, antennae, mandibles, swimming legs 1-4, and fifth legs. Some characters in the Neotropical... |
