The paper presents data collected in an assessment of effects of water hyacinth infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha, Kenya. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The ecological effects of water hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, on Lake Naivasha have received little attention compared to the large body of work available on the weed’s socioeconomic impact on the country’s water ways and methods for its removal. This study was conducted to determine if water hyacinth infestation in Lake Naivasha affects phytoplankton productivity. Les algues des milieux saumâtres et marins ont pendant longtemps intéressé l'Institut de Recherche pour le développement(IRD, ex-ORSTOM) et le Centre de Recherches Océanologiques (CRO) qui y ont effectué de nombreuses recherches: CARPENTIER (1982), COUTE & ILTIS (1985), MAURER( 1978). Cependant, tous ces travaux, en majorité, concernent la lagune Ebrié et dans une moindre mesure la lagune Aby. Il n'existe pas de données systématiques sur le phytoplancton de la lagune de Grand-Lahou. Pour combler l'absence d'etudes sur le phytoplancton de cette lagune, le choix, d'emblée, a été de donner une priorité à sa connaissance taxinomique, indispensable à notre avis et nécessaire aux études écologiques.
