Optimizing nitrogen rates in the midwestern United States for maximum ecosystem value Ecology and Society

The importance of corn production to the midwestern United States cannot be overestimated. However, high production requires high nitrogen fertilization, which carries costs to environmental services such as water quality. Therefore, a trade-off exists between the production of corn yield and water quality. We used the Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment for Shallow depths and Crop Environment Resource Synthesis-Maize models to investigate the nature of this trade-off while testing the Simple Analytic Framework trade-offs featured in this Special Feature. TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF ARABLE CROP FARMING IN IJEBU DIVISION OF OGUN STATE AgEcon

The objective of this study was to estimate the efficiency of arable crop farming in Ijebu Division of Ogun State with Ijebu North East and Odogbolu Local Governments selected as the study area. To achieve this objective, primary data were collected with the use of well structured questionnaires from 120 respondents. Of these, 90 were usable for the analyses. Frontier production function was used in analysing the data. The results show that 56 male and 34 female respondents were interviewed, out of which 73 per cent had formal education and 53 per cent had less than 10 years of farming experience. RESTRICTING PESTICIDE USE: THE IMPACT ON PROFITABILITY BY FARM SIZE AgEcon

A sample of 226 cash grain farms in the Lake States-Corn Belt region are analyzed to estimate the impact of restricting pesticide use on profits. These 226 farms are classified into small medium, and large farms according to their sale revenues. The results suggest the existence of pest management practices that could substantially reduce pesticide use without incurring economic losses. The reductions in profit associated with gradual reduction in pesticide expenditure appear to increase with farm size.

Impacts of environmental regulations on the efficiency of arable farms in France and Germany AgEcon

This paper develops a methodology for asymmetric treatment of desirable and undesirable outputs. First, a hyperbolic output efficiency measurement is used to describe a middle term transformation of production processes where producers try to improve their competitiveness together with a reduction of the negative impact on the environment. Second, a radial efficiency measurement, called directional output distance function, is used to depict a long-term transformation of the production process. Stochastic Frontier Analysis of Biological Agents (Microbial Inoculants) Input Usage in Apple Production AgEcon

In this paper, we analyze the impact of the Microbial Inoculants (MI) Technology on apple yields and pesticide application using 2007 farm data. The results show that pesticide usage is not reduced by MI applications. However, there is a significant positive effect on the yields. Apple production efficiency is 37%.
