An outbreak of Candida spp. bloodstream infection in a tertiary care center in Bogotá, Colombia BJID
DiazGranados,Carlos A.; Martinez,Adriana; Deaza,Ceneth; Valderrama,Sandra.
Several cases of Candida bloodstream infections were documented from June to October 2004 at a tertiary care center in Bogotá, Colombia. Since no cases of candidemia had occurred during the preceding four months, an outbreak was declared. As a result, a microbiological study, a revision of infection control practices and a case-control study were performed. In all, 18 cases of candidemia were ascertained. Parenteral nutrition (p=0.04), presence of a central line (p=0.03), and severity of illness (p=0.03) were associated with candidemia in bivariate analysis. Diverse Candida species were observed. Candida parapsilosis contamination was found in plastic containers used for transient intravenous (IV) medication storage at the bedside, plastic bags reused for...

Central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection and Cryptococcus neoformans BJID
Tuon,Felipe F.; Morales,Hugo M. P.; Penteado-Filho,Sergio R.; da-Silva,Margarete M.; Quadros,Isabel de; El Hamoui,Amina.
This is the first case reported of central venous catheter-related fungemia due to C. neoformans. A patient with chronic renal failure developed a fungemia during the treatment of a dialysis-associated bacteremia. Cryptococcus neoformans grew in the catheter tip and blood culture. We addressed questions about this catheter-related fungemia.

Secular trends of candidemia at a Brazilian tertiary care teaching hospital BJID
Braga,Paula Rocha; Cruz,Isabela L.; Ortiz,Isadora; Barreiros,Gloria; Nouér,Simone A.; Nucci,Marcio.
ABSTRACT Background Candidemia is the most frequent invasive fungal disease in hospitalized patients, and is associated with high mortality rates. The main objective of this study was to evaluate changes in the epidemiology of candidemia at a tertiary care hospital in a 21-year period. Methods We evaluated all episodes of candidemia diagnosed between 1996 and 2016 at a University-affiliated tertiary care hospital in Brazil. We arbitrarily divided the study period in 3: 1996-2002 (period 1), 2003-2009 (period 2) and 2010-2016 (period 3). Incidence rates were calculated using hospital admissions as denominator. Results We observed 331 episodes of candidemia. The incidence was 1.30 episodes per 1000 admissions, with no significant change over time. Candida...

Prevalence of Candida species in umbilical catheters implanted in newborns in Natal, Brazil BJM
Fernandes,Ana Cristina Santos; Sousa Junior,Francisco Canindé de; Oliveira,Solange Maria de; Calich,Lucia; Milan,Eveline Pipolo.
All the newborns with umbilical venous catheters, hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit at Januário Cicco Maternity Hospital in Natal, Brazil, between January, 2003 and December, 2004 were studied. The prevalence of Candida species in the tips of intra-venous catheters was assessed, as well as the coexisting exposures that the patients were subjected to. Catheter tips were cultivated in blood agar and when yeast culture occurred, the colony was subcultivated for species identification through morphologic and biochemical assays. From a total of 240 catheters, 41 were positive for yeasts, and 34 were submitted to identification. The following agents were isolated: 13 C. albicans (38%), 10 Candida parapsilosis (29%), 8 C. tropicalis (20%), one C....

Polymerase Chain Reaction and blood culture for diagnosis of canine sepsis Ciência Rural
Silveira,Marcelo Marques da; Cândido,Stéfhano Luis; Santos,Karin Rinaldi dos; Maia,Maerle Oliveira; Souza,Roberto Lopes de; Sousa,Valéria Régia Franco; Almeida,Arleana do Bom Parto Ferreira de; Dutra,Valeria; Nakazato,Luciano.
ABSTRACT: Sepsis is characterized by the presence of organ dysfunction secondary to the dysregulated systemic inflammatory response associated with an infection, and has high mortality rates. Traditional diagnostic techniques based on non-microbiological isolation are time-consuming and may delay treatment. Thus, this study aimed to compare bacterial and fungal broad-range polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and blood culture for diagnosis of sepsis in dogs. Blood samples from 88 dogs with suspected sepsis were analyzed by blood culture, and PCR to detect bacterial and fungal DNA. On blood culture, 20 (22.7%) samples tested positive for bacterial isolates; however, none tested positive for fungi. Through PCR analysis, bacterial DNA was detected in 46 (52.3%)...
