The biocidal agrochemicals commonly used in agriculture can remain in the soil, affecting the environmental conditions and causing serious risks to health. Knowing that soil microorganisms, especially those from the rhizosphere, can degrade environmental xenobiotics, it was evaluated the potential of bacteria isolated from Coriandrum sativum L. rhizosphere to biodegrade carbendazim (MBC), a fungicide extensively used by agriculturists from rural farming communities in Manaus, Amazonas. Cultures carried out in medium containing carbendazim as a sole carbon source enabled the isolation of 80 bacteria, in the established conditions. Assays to determine degradation potential allowed the selection of the two elite isolates identified as Stenotrophomonas sp.... |

Most of the world's consumers have used the natural coatings instead of chemical coatings. In this research, some quality properties of Thomson orange were evaluated using Chitosan edible coating (at concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 2%) and chemical coating of fungicide (Ortho Phenyl Phenol) as compared to uncoated samples during storage for three months. Fruit were maintained in cold storage at 6 °C temperature and 85-90% relative humidity, then pH, total soluble solid (TSS) of orange juice and percentage of fruit weight loss were measured during storage every month. The results showed that weight loss of fruit with 2% chitosan coating was lower than other treatments. Also this treatment had high resistance against fungal attacks due to high values of pH, so... |

Abstract: We have established how natural compounds from green propolis collected by the species Apis mellifera act against the growth of Pythium aphanidermatum. On the basis of mass spectrometry (Q-ToF MS), we determined that Artepillin C, the major constituent of green propolis, underlies the effect and displays activity against P. aphanidermatum at a minimal inhibitory concentration of 750 µg.mL-1. Biophysical studies based on model membranes showed that this inhibitory effect may be linked with a membrane-related phenomenon: Artepillin C increases the permeability of membranes with relatively high fluidity in their lateral structure, a feature that is in line with the lipid composition reported for the cytoplasmic membrane of P. aphanidermatum.... |

ABSTRACT The indiscriminate use of pesticides on grape crops is harmful for consumers´ healthin “in natura” consumption and in the ingestion of wine and grape juice. During winemaking, a rapid and efficient fermentation stage is critical to avoid proliferation of contaminating microorganisms and to guarantee the product´s quality. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has the advantage of detecting these contaminants in the early stages of fermentation. However, this enzymatic reaction may also be susceptible to specific problems, reducing its efficiency. Agricultural practices, such as fungicide treatments, may be a source of PCR inhibiting factors and may also interfere in the normal course of fermentation. The action of the pesticides captan and folpet on PCR... |

The effect of temperature, concentration and contact time on the fungicidal effect of clove oleoresin dispersed in a concentrated sugar solution at 21 and 37ºC, and clove oleoresin at 0.2 to 0.8% (v/v) was studied. The test microorganisms were Candida albicans, Penicillium citrinum, Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The fungicidal effect was enhanced at 37ºC; at this temperature short contact times (e.g. 1 min.) were enough to eliminate a microbial inoculum of 10(6) c.f.u./ml of C. albicans. Although clove oleoresin caused important lethal effect, P. citrinum and A. niger were more resistant. After 60 minutes, clove oleoresin dispersed (0.4% v/v) in concentrated sugar solution caused a 99.6% reduction of the initial population (10(6)... |
