Koralen met een losbandig leven. Dat was het onderwerp van de vorige 'Met Naturalis in zee'. Vrij levende paddestoelkoralen dus. Maar sommige soorten van die paddestoelkoralen hebben één grote mond, terwijl ander beschikking hebben over meerdere monden. Van belang als overlevingsstrategie.

Mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) of Madang Lagoon, northern Papua New Guinea: an annotated check-list with the description of Cantharellus jebbi spec. nov.* Naturalis

A check-list of mushroom corals (Fungiidae) is given with annotations on their distribution in Madang Lagoon, northern Papua New Guinea, Bismarck Sea. A total of 36 fungiid species is recorded from this locality, which is more than from any other studied so far. One species, Cantharellus jebbi spec, nov., is new to science. It is the only monostomatous mushroom coral species known that is entirely encrusting. It also represents the first record of a recent Cantharellus species in the IndoMalayan region.

Habitat preferences of coral-associated wentletrap snails (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae) Naturalis

Examination of about 60,000 scleractinian corals of the families Dendrophylliidae, Euphylliidae and Fungiidae for the presence of associated wentletrap snails (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae) revealed various ectoparasitic life history strategies. Twenty Indo-Pacific wentletrap species were found, which were either host-specific or generalist. Most species were associated with mushroom corals, especially free-living species belonging to the Fungiidae. Snails showed different preferences with regard to their position relative to mushroom corals, the host’s size and its substrate. No preferences for depth were found. The Fungiidae of Taiwan are treated as a part of a series dealing with the Taiwanese Scleractinia. A total of 27 species, classified with seven subgenera and eight genera, are briefly described. One species, Fungia (Pleuractis) taiwanensis, is new to science.

New records of Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968 (Bivalvia, Mytilidae) boring into Indonesian mushroom corals (Scleractinia, Fungiidae) Naturalis

New observations on endoparasites in mushroom corals at South Sulawesi and Bali resulted in eight coral host records of the mytilid bivalve Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968, bringing the total to 14. The host corals were observed in various habitats, most frequently on sandy substrates. The largest numbers of parasitic bivalves (>10 individuals) were found in large attached mushroom coral hosts of the genus Podabacia.

First Indonesian record of Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968 (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), endosymbiont of Fungia spp. (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) Naturalis

The mytilid bivalve Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau, Goreau, Neumann & Yonge, 1968, previously mistakenly referred to as F. eilatensis Soot-Ryen, 1969, is reported for the first time from Indonesia. It lives as an obligate endosymbiont of mushroom corals, particulary Fungia spp., reef-dwelling corals restricted to the tropical Indo-Pacific. Notes are given on its association with different host species, its habitat, its biogeography, and its possible competition with endosymbiotic gastropods belonging to the genus Leptoconchus (Coralliophilidae).

Debating phylogenetic relationships of the scleractinian Psammocora: molecular and morphological evidences Naturalis

The phylogenetic relationships of the scleractinian genus Psammocora with the other genera traditionally included in the family Siderastreidae and some Fungiidae are assessed based on combined skeletal and molecular data. P. explanulata differs from the other examined congeneric species (P. contigua, P. digitata, P. nierstraszi, P. profundacella, P. superficialis, and P. stellata) in possessing interstomatous septa between adult corallites, costae, and in having continuous buttress-like structures joining septal faces (i.e., fulturae) which typically occur in fungiids. Phenotypic plasticity revealed by molecular studies on reef corals of Fungia (Cycloseris) spp. (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) near river outlets Naturalis

On a patch reef off Makassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia, corals identified as Fungia (Cycloseris) costulata, Fungia (Cycloseris) tenuis and Fungia (Cycloseris) cf costulata were collected down to a maximum depth of 10 m. The corals lived sympatrically. Mushroom coral clones resulting from fragmentation can be recognized by their equal coloration and close proximity. Therefore, to ensure that no clones were collected, corals of dissimilar colors were selected at a mutual distance of 5 m. The corals were kept alive in two 30 liter sea-water aquariums with an air-pump. They were photographed in detail. Taxonomy, Phylogeny and Biogeography of Mushroom Corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) Naturalis

The Fungiidae are mushroom corals that live in sublittoral habitats in the tropical Indo-Pacific. Their habitats are part of coral reefs or other marine substrata, which usually can be found in the proximity of the reefs. In the present taxonomic revision, the family is divided into 11 genera; one of which, Fungia, is subdivided into seven subgenera. A total of 40 species is described and figured, three of which are new to science. One species is renamed. The stratigraphic distribution is given for all the species recorded in fossil state. A tentative phylogenetic reconstruction down to the species level is given. Control of bleaching in mushroom coral populations (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) in the Java Sea: stress tolerance and interference by life history strategy Naturalis

Bleaching was studied in populations of phylogenetically closely related species (n = 21) of mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) around Pari Island (Java Sea) during a period of excessive seawater warming in 1983. The interspecific variation in the proportions of affected individuals was significant. Spatial variation in the degree of bleaching anlong fungiid assemblages depended much on relative species abundances. Mushroom corals In relatively stagnant water of lagoons and on the inner reef flat showed little bleaching. Historical biogeography of Fungia (Pleuractis) spp. (Scleractinia: Fungiidae), including a new species from the Seychelles Naturalis

An update of the phylogeny and biogeography of mushroom coral species belonging to Fungia (Pleuractis) is presented. Among the five species of this monophyletic group, one is described as new to science. This species, Fungia seychellensis spec, nov., was discovered during the Netherlands Seychelles Expedition (1992-1993) in the framework of the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme 1990/1995.

Mesophotic mushroom coral records at Brunei Darussalam support westward extension of the Coral Triangle to the South China Sea waters of Northwest Borneo Naturalis

This communication reports the discovery of two additional fungiid coral species, Cycloseris hexagonalis and Lithophyllon spinifer, from a relatively deep shelf reef in Brunei waters. These new records plus two earlier excluded ones, Cycloseris explanulata and C. wellsi, raise the known number of mushroom coral species at this Northwest Borneo location to 37 which is comparable to the number (n=35) reported for reefs of the nearby Tungku Abdul Rahman Park/Kota Kinabalu area, outside but close to the currently recognized northwest boundary of the zone of maximum marine biodiversity, the Coral Triangle (CT). Bivalve species of the mytilid genus Lithophaga, including a new one, are recorded from Indonesian mushroom corals (Scleractinia, Fungiidae). True associations with live hosts including L. laevigata, L. lessepsiana, L. lima, L. punctata spec. nov., and L. simplex, while specimens of L. malaccana and L. mucronata have been found in bore holes in encrusted or dead parts of infested corals.
