This study applies panel data techniques to investigate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and GDP for a panel of 19 African countries (COMESA) based on annual data for the period 1980-2005. In the first step, we examine the degree of integration between GDP and energy consumption by employing three panel unit root tests and find that the variables are integrated of order one. In the second step, we investigate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and GDP. Results overwhelming show that GDP and energy consumption move together in the long-run. In the third step, we estimate the long-run relationship and test for causality using panel-based error correction models. The results indicate that long-run and short-run causality... |

Despite consecutive years of good harvest, Malawi has experienced continuous price escalation of staple food commodities unsolved over the time. The real price of maize in Malawi has increased by 141 percent between 1998 and 2008, and has been rising along with the food prices of many other commodities over this period. This study therefore investigates the determinants of food inflation rate in Malawi and its effect on the economy. Monthly and annual data were collected from National Statistical Office and Reserve Bank of Malawi from 1978 to 2008. Data were analyzed by estimating an error correction model (ECM). The results show that fertilizer prices, crop diversification index, maize prices, diesel prices, real exchange rates and real interest rates... |

The Czech Republic entered the crisis with relatively good starting conditions - showed no significant macroeconomic imbalances and financial system was not destabilized. However, the crisis has here also been and a decline in GDP in 2009 to 4.1% was mainly due to economic recession in the Euro zone. In many countries there has been a change in the sector scope. The Czech Republic belongs to the industrial-oriented countries and the significance of recession is also demonstrated by the development of industrial production and exports. Further economic increase depends mainly on exports, because there are many industries in the Czech Republic with foreign majority and a large part of their production goes abroad. Czech agriculture has been also facing... |

The present study as well as the studies produced by UNCTAD, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe1 and other institutions, reveal certain characteristics of the FDI flows in the transition countries from Central and South-Eastern Europe, applicable for Romania and Bulgaria, too: - These flows grow faster than the world average. - The FDI per capita is low compared to the values in Western Europe (2000-3000 USD) and USA (about 1800 USD). - There is a linear correlation between GDP per capita in the transition countries and the FDI level. - The main sectors initially targeted by foreign investors were the industrial sector (40-60%) and the trade sector (12-25%). - About 25% of FDI in the transition countries come from Hungary, Poland, Czech... |

In order to analyze the relation between agricultural input factors and economic growth in Anhui Province, the evaluation index system of agricultural input is built from the perspectives of subject, object and tools based on grey system theory. The government investment in agricultural science and technology is selected as the index of labor subject, that is labor-related index(X1), the total sown area of crops is selected as the index of labor object(X2), the investment in rural water and electricity construction is chosen as the index of tools(X3), and the GDP of Anhui Province is denoted by X0. According to the relevant data, the improved model of grey correlation analysis is adopted to calculate the correlation among the investment in agricultural... |

This study aimed to analyze the economic structure of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, to measure the agribusiness sector of the state in the years of 1980 and 1996 and to evaluate the agribusiness share on total GDP formation, based on inter-regional input-output matrices. The principal results obtained were: a) a significant change in the agribusiness structure occurred from 1980 to 1996; b) the share of aggregate I in total agribusiness increased expressively, rising from 12.31% in 1980 to 20.24% in 1996; c) relative stability were observed in the evolution of aggregate III from 1980 to 1996, rising from 36.40% to 36,51%; d) the aggregate II share declined from 51.29% in 1980 to 43.25% in 1996. Based on the 2008 Shaanxi Statistical Yearbook and the relevant data of Shaanxi GDP in the years 1952-2007, SPSS statistical software and time series analysis are used to establish ARIMA (1.2,1) time series model, according to the four steps, recognition rules and stationary test of time series under AIC criterion. ACF graph and PACF graph are used to conduct the applicability test on model. Then, the actual value and predicted value in the years 2002-2007 are compared in order to forecast the GDP of Shaanxi Province in the next 6 years based on this model. Result shows that the relative error of actual value and predicted value is within the range of 5%, and the forecasting effect of this model is relatively good. It is forecasted that the GDP of Shaanxi... |

This article looks for measuring and characterizing the milk’s agribusiness of Rio Grande do Sul economy. The methodology used indicators of sectorial performance and indexes of autonomy of purchases and sales to define the measure of the milk’s agribusiness. The data were extracted of the matrix input-output available by the Economy and Statistics Foundation (FEE) of the Rio Grande do Sul for the year 1998. It was verified that the state milk’s agribusiness answers, to basic price, for 6,77% of state’s agribusiness; it is strongly linked to the urban section in a direct way and it uses 118.603 workers, which employees 5,07% and 2,42% of the workers of the state’s agribusiness and state’s economy, respectively. We use international comparison data of Summers and Heston to trace the development of three regions in Western Europe: the countries currently outside the European Union (EEC), the EEC Center, and the EEC Periphery (Greece, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain). For each year during the period 1950-1990, the per capita gross domestic products of these regions decrease in this order, but the development over time shows a rapid increase of all three regions as well as a mutual convergence, the inequality of the regions and their constituent countries declining substantially. |
