Choice of Index Determines the Relationship between Corruption and Environmental Sustainability Ecology and Society
Ewers, Robert M; Institute of Zoology; robert.ewers@ioz.ac.uk; Smith, Robert J; Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology; r.j.smith@kent.ac.uk.
The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) was recently used to investigate links between sustainability and corruption. Here, we show that the ESI contradicts another widely used index of environmental sustainability, the Ecological Footprint (EF), with the result that the most sustainable nations under the ESI are the least sustainable under the EF. Consequently, opposite conclusions can be drawn from investigations into the causes of environmental sustainability, depending on which index is used.

Energy Consumption and Economic Growth: Evidence from COMESA Countries AgEcon
Chali, Nondo; Mulugeta, Kahsai.
This study applies panel data techniques to investigate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and GDP for a panel of 19 African countries (COMESA) based on annual data for the period 1980-2005. In the first step, we examine the degree of integration between GDP and energy consumption by employing three panel unit root tests and find that the variables are integrated of order one. In the second step, we investigate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and GDP. Results overwhelming show that GDP and energy consumption move together in the long-run. In the third step, we estimate the long-run relationship and test for causality using panel-based error correction models. The results indicate that long-run and short-run causality...

FOOD INFLATION IN MALAWI: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ECONOMY AgEcon
Ularo, Khonje Makaiko Gonapanyanja.
Despite consecutive years of good harvest, Malawi has experienced continuous price escalation of staple food commodities unsolved over the time. The real price of maize in Malawi has increased by 141 percent between 1998 and 2008, and has been rising along with the food prices of many other commodities over this period. This study therefore investigates the determinants of food inflation rate in Malawi and its effect on the economy. Monthly and annual data were collected from National Statistical Office and Reserve Bank of Malawi from 1978 to 2008. Data were analyzed by estimating an error correction model (ECM). The results show that fertilizer prices, crop diversification index, maize prices, diesel prices, real exchange rates and real interest rates...

The influence of crisis on the sector structure of economy focusing on agriculture AgEcon
Junkova, Simona; Matuskova, Eliska.
The Czech Republic entered the crisis with relatively good starting conditions - showed no significant macroeconomic imbalances and financial system was not destabilized. However, the crisis has here also been and a decline in GDP in 2009 to 4.1% was mainly due to economic recession in the Euro zone. In many countries there has been a change in the sector scope. The Czech Republic belongs to the industrial-oriented countries and the significance of recession is also demonstrated by the development of industrial production and exports. Further economic increase depends mainly on exports, because there are many industries in the Czech Republic with foreign majority and a large part of their production goes abroad. Czech agriculture has been also facing...

THE RELATIONSHIPS OF TRADE, ECONOMIC GROWTH, AND MARKET POWER: THE CASE OF RICE EXPORTING AgEcon
Kang, Hyunsoo; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
This paper aims to (1) analyze the relationship between rice exports and economic growth for the world’s top four exporting countries (Thailand, Vietnam, India, and the U.S) and (2) seek to determine to what extent market power affects a country’s economic growth. The main objective of this paper is to determine to what extent economic growth impacts a country’s rice exports as well as to what extent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) impacts a country’s ability to export rice. This analysis also examines the impact of market power on economic growth. On the basis of these results, we examine the existence of market power in the international rice market with respect to rice supply, and moreover, propose that there is a bi-directional causality between the...

Az agrárkutatás-fejlesztés GDP-re gyakorolt hatása az EU országaiban AgEcon
Szucs, Istvan; Mohamed, Zsuzsanna; Takacs, Szabolcs.
A függvényszámításaink alapján a következő összegző jellegű megállapításokat tesszük: • A C-D típusú függvények jól alkalmazhatók az általunk vizsgált termelési tényezők hatásának megközelítő mérésére. • 2000-ben a mezőgazdasági eszközállomány, 2007-ben pedig a mezőgazdasági munkaerő játszott nagyobb szerepet az agrár GDP előállításában. Ebben főleg annak hatása érződik, hogy közben jelentősen javult az élőmunka technikai fejlettsége, a munkaerőben nagyobb tudásanyag halmozódott fel, a termelési tényezők között felértéke¬lődött a szerepe. • Az agrár K+F szerepe a GDP képződésében 2000-ben 11%, 2007-ben 14% körüli, tehát a fejlesztési törekvések lényegesek az agrárgazdaság fejlődése szempontjából. A módosított termelési függvények segítségével kimutattuk...

Non-Linear Dynamics and Predictable Forecast Errors: An Application to the OECD Forecasts for Germany AgEcon
Antzoulatos, Angelos A.; Wilfling, Bernd.
Recent theoretical advances in consumption theory suggest that there may exist predictable consumption surges which, if not taken sufficiently into account in forecasting, may lead to predictable forecast errors. We use this insight to identify economic variables that might help improve the OECD's forecasts for Germany's consumption and GDP growth.

Grey Correlation between Agricultural Input Factors and Regional GDP Growth in Anhui Province AgEcon
Men, Ke-pei; Zhao, Kai.
In order to analyze the relation between agricultural input factors and economic growth in Anhui Province, the evaluation index system of agricultural input is built from the perspectives of subject, object and tools based on grey system theory. The government investment in agricultural science and technology is selected as the index of labor subject, that is labor-related index(X1), the total sown area of crops is selected as the index of labor object(X2), the investment in rural water and electricity construction is chosen as the index of tools(X3), and the GDP of Anhui Province is denoted by X0. According to the relevant data, the improved model of grey correlation analysis is adopted to calculate the correlation among the investment in agricultural...

Malaria and National Income: Examining a Two Way Causal Relationship AgEcon
Datta, Saurabh; Reimer, Jeffrey J..
Simple plots of data show that malaria has a negative correlation with national income per capita, whether looking across countries at a point in time, or looking at a single country over time. Some countries have been able to move from an equilibrium characterized by low income and high malaria, to a new equilibrium with higher income and lower rates of malaria. This study develops and estimates a simultaneous equations model to explain these changes. We distinguish three potential causal chains: (a) the ability for decreases in malaria to increase income, (b) the ability for increases in income to reduce malaria (reverse causality), and (c) external factors that may lead to both higher income and lower malaria (incidental association). We find that...

The GDP's of Three Regions in Western Europe, 1950-1990 AgEcon
Theil, Henri; Deepak, Sri Devi.
We use international comparison data of Summers and Heston to trace the development of three regions in Western Europe: the countries currently outside the European Union (EEC), the EEC Center, and the EEC Periphery (Greece, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain). For each year during the period 1950-1990, the per capita gross domestic products of these regions decrease in this order, but the development over time shows a rapid increase of all three regions as well as a mutual convergence, the inequality of the regions and their constituent countries declining substantially.
